  1. All of these caches should be archived for breaking geocaching.com rules, right now. In the description for every single cache (which are all the same) they tell the cacher to go to the Little A'LeInn, a local restaurant and gift shop. These break the rule against commercial caches: "Commercial Caches Commercial caches will not be published on geocaching.com without prior approval from Groundspeak. A commercial cache is a geocache listing or geocache which is perceived by Groundspeak, Groundspeak's employees, or the Volunteer Geocache Reviewers as having been submitted to geocaching.com with the principal or substantial intent of soliciting customers or generating commercial gain. The geocache is presumed to be commercial if the finder is required to go inside a business, interact with employees, and/or purchase a product or service, or if the cache listing has overtones of advertising, marketing, or promotion. Additionally, links to businesses, commercial advertisers, charities, political or social agendas, or the inclusion of their associated logos are not permitted on cache descriptions without prior permission from Groundspeak." (www.geocaching.com) Because of the overtones of advertising and promotion, every single one of these caches are illegal and should be archived. No exceptions.
  2. The cache owner (poster of this thread) seems to be quite rude and mean-spirited in this exchange. The guy who was logging the caches may not have acted in the nicest or most polite way, but it's much easier to let go and not make such a big deal out of it. The logger has a reasonable explanation, and it's not like the presence of his logs detracts from the owners enjoyment of the sport of geocaching, so why be so bothered?
  3. My friend almost stepped on a rattlesnake while we were out caching. When we heard the snake start to rattle we were pretty freaked out. No one felt like taking the time to capture him on film .
  4. Maybe you haven't read all the discussion of how other people considered attempting these Caches, like multi day camping runs? I don't see that it was set up for the sole purpose of record attempts, just that some people used them that way. A multi-day camping run is still a kind of how-long-does-it-take-to-find-them-all game. It still seems to me that they were placed to be parts of a whole, which due to the volume of caches should have been a single cache or maybe 10 caches. It appears they were listed as individual caches in order to pad the owner's (s'?) cache hide stats or the finders' cache find stats.
  5. Even though the caches may not have been within 0.1 miles, they definitely broke the "spirit of the rule" clause. Setting up 1000 pins just so someone else can knock down a record-setting amount feels dishonest. If anything, since the trail was intended as a single game of see-how-many-you-can-find-in-24-hours, it should have been listed as a single multicache with rules on how to play the game in the description.
  6. I actually am thinking of making a cache like this too. I've decided that on the cache page I will ban all trade items from being in the cache, so as to not confuse them with the log. However, I will stipulate that only I am to remove trade items, so that someone doesn't accidentally take the log. I will also make it a members only cache, just in case. Hopefully it will survive!
  7. Since I'm a teenager, people always seem to think I'm up to something, so I already have no qualms about doing something "suspicious" such as "sneaking" around.
  8. I've seen countless micros labeled as smalls, and even one micro labeled as a regular. I told the CO about it, and their response was something along the lines of "It's like a film canister but almost twice as long." That just blew me away, because I don't know any film canister that can hold half a sandwich, therefore it shouldn't even qualify as a small. This point of contention was extremely annoying, since the cache was hidden hanging from a tree, in a way that no real regular could possibly be.
  9. This website has free routable topo/road maps for Garmin brand GPSr devices. http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php
  10. Too true, my friend, too true. Good tools to bring are flashlights (to see into dark caves or crevices); tweezers (to get rolled logs out of those pesky micro and nano caches); a jacket (in case you need to shield your face with your arms as you crash your way through brambles or bushes); sunscreen (to avoid getting sunburned); money (to take public transportation and a good thing to have on hand); and food (to keep your energy up).
  11. Anyone can have a geocaching account. I know there are a lot of parents that take their babies geocaching, and write logs for them. I'm sure some pregnant women even go geocaching and write logs for the child they are carrying, planning to give their child control of their account when they learn to read and write, and have the child dictate the logs to them before then.
  12. Great, glad to hear it worked for you! Can you tell me exactly what line or what command you took out, so I can edit the procedure? Thanks. I actually took out this whole part: $ ls Macintosh HD UNTITLED $ cd UNTITLED [replace UNTITLED with your card name] and for the very first command it should be $ cd /volumes/UNTITLED (I'm not sure if you were implying this or not, I'm not that computer-savvy)
  13. Do you have a mac? Find a Windows pc and remove the hidden spotlight and trashcan files from the card. I don't think you need to format the card. You can also delete those hidden files easily from a mac terminal window. I can post the exact commands if anyone needs them. No need for a windows pc to do this. I would appriciate if you posted the commands, thanks! 1) Connect your GPSr to the mac in USB Mass Storage mode, Setup->Interface->Enter. Or mount your micro SD card to the mac via an SD card reader. The commands are the same either way. 2) Look on your desktop or the Finder and make note of the name of the SD card that got mounted, in my case it is named "UNTITLED". Your name maybe different, and if it is then substitute your name for my UNTITLED name. 2) Open the Terminal on your mac, either from the icon in your dock, or from Applications->Utilities->Terminal.app. If this is a problem so far, then I would suggest not going on as it gets a little more complicated. 3) Enter the following commands at the Terminal prompt ($). My comments are in brackets, [my comments]. $ cd /Volume/ $ ls Macintosh HD UNTITLED $ cd UNTITLED [replace UNTITLED with your card name] $ ls -al total 40 drwxrwxrwx 1 don staff 4096 Jul 25 16:27 . drwxrwxrwt@ 4 root admin 136 Jul 25 16:00 .. drwxrwxrwx 1 don staff 4096 Jul 25 15:57 .Spotlight-V100 drwxrwxrwx@ 1 don staff 4096 Jul 25 16:00 .Trashes -rwxrwxrwx 1 don staff 4096 Jul 25 15:57 ._.Trashes drwxrwxrwx 1 don staff 4096 Jul 25 16:00 .fseventsd $ rm -r .Spotlight-V100/ $ rm -r .fseventsd/ $ rm -r .Trashes/ $ cd .. 4) Now you can eject your SD card via the Finder or Desktop icon. 5) Replace the SD card into the GPSr and see if that fixes the problem, it always does for me. But remember that if you ever connect the SD card to your mac again the bad files will be rewritten to the card and you would have to repeat the above steps again. Let me know if this works for you or if I need to clarify anything. Awesome, it worked for me . I had to take out the third line for it to work, for some reason.
  14. Does anyone know why the Google Earth KML was removed and when we'll get it back? I couldn't find much information about its removal.

  16. Exactly SOLVED!!! I had to go through two SD cards before I came to the same conclusion... The problem only begins when you use USB mass storage mode on a mac. This problem also happens on the vista cx with software version 4.00.
  17. The Legend HCx is very similar to the Vista HCx, lacking only an altimeter/barometer and an electronic compass (works if you aren't moving unlike a normal one).
  18. Two separate puzzle caches can not have the same ending, because caches must be at least .1 miles (528 feet) apart.
  19. We got 13 on two different days on a row (Friday and Saturday). We do walk between all caches, and each day was ~20 miles of walking, so I'd say although it would be possible to do more, it wouldn't be very feasible for us to do more in a day without some sort of wheeled locomotion.
  20. I haven't been around here long, but after I read this post I knew who posted it without looking at the name - Vinny and Sue always have the best stories that, in a roundabout way, tell something insightful about the topic at hand.
  21. You aren't supposed to let people see you access the cache, which can be a large factor in cache difficulty. Some easy to spot caches are in the middle of highly populated public areas, which makes taking them out secretly hard. One tip I have is to make the first cache you find not in a park or other place that could have tree cover. Trees can significantly affect your GPS accuracy, and make it frustrating to locate the site of a cache. Another tip: Print out the cache web page, because the description and hint can really help you find a cache when you are stumped. Final piece of advice: If your son is a child, he probably will be excited to trade for "treasure" in a cache. When looking for a good cache to find, try to find ones that are size small, medium, or large. Micro sized caches are often too small to hold and cool stuff, which kids really like finding.
  22. If you have an ipod touch or iphone I suggest that you buy the official geocaching app. It downloads the whole cache page for you, and while it can take a while to save them all to your ipod, you can probably take 30 minutes and get the closest 200 to wherever you want. It works really well for teams of 2 or more cachers, because each person can hold one device.
  23. If it's any help, you should try to use the most updated internet explorer browser. I usually use google chrome, but for sending coordinates to my GPS I have to use the newest version of IE because in chrome it doesn't work.
