  1. Maybe not much help as I've never used any Garmin map products other than car satnav. For many years I have used the free 'openstreetmaps' http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ never found them wanting and used them in many European countries. On the download site you can select the continent that you wan't (very/very large file) or (my personal preference) individual countries of your choice. You can also download specific map tiles covering the area of your choice. For example I have southern UK, Spain and Portugal. Cyprus is well covered. By the way there is a lage active geocaching community in Cyprus.
  2. Currently using a Samsung mini S3 (nice and compact). Touring Spain and Portugal I am using 'gdak' with a database of 14425 of caches. Really easy to use and pretty good accuracy. Impressed with 'gdak' as to how quickly it logs into geocaching.com to post 'found it' logs. Using a 'windows' tablet and 'gsak' with the same database to transfer small gpx files to my etrex. but the phone setup is working well.
  3. As above I always load my maps and cache files to my gps SD card. However I went out to do a long series one day and on arrival discovered that the cache file was not being read (back home, realized not loaded doh!). Fortunately I had also loaded the cache file to my phone SD card for C.geo use. To make everything similar by chance I had placed it in same folder structure of gps. After initial panic and not really wishing to use phone for navigation a light went on. A quick change of SD cards gave me the cache series on the gps. Loss of map ( on the gps) was no problem due the clear route that we were to follow. As a further backup I now have my maps also on the phone SD (but not in any folder as per gps).
  4. Yep! pretty much anywhere in Europe or around the mediteranian having access to Google Translate - German Langauge is always helpful. And its always good to meet fellow cachers from Germany especially when your in the middle of a troublesome search or even better to do a local series with them. Hopefully that doesn't sound too condescending, I certainly don't mean to, I just find them really friendly and helpful.
  5. Other than my gps I use an android phone loaded with c.geo loaded with the gpx file for the caches also Google translate with the downloaded languages for where we're going. This gives you the offline option of viewing a cache page and having c.geo interact with Google translate to translate any selected section of the cache page. Including description, hints, and in particular the logs as sometimes they in languages outside of the country. For example when in Spain I have Spanish,Catalunian (a local but widely used dialect) and German. They've helped me out many times.
  6. No problems with Windows 10, FireFox, Garmin Communicator and 'send gpx to My GPS' (Etrex_30). Windows 10, FireFox set as Default Browser, FireFox set in Widows 10 as default browser. Plug in Etrex_30 (for the first time), select as usb drive, windows report problems with external drive connection but appears to fix this (finds required drivers). On PC look at Etrex_30 files for both internal memory and external memory card all OK. Log into geocaching.com, select a Cache page, "send to My GPS", pop up "garmin Communicator not found", select download link. This was followed by various FireFox messages of 'not supported' and 'not allowed' blah1 blah1 blah! messages. Worked my way through by 'ignoring and allowing'. Restart FireFox. Find a cache page, 'send to gps', communicator opens and have choice of write to Garmin or memor card. Wrote to both and all is well. So no problems but was it a fluke? I don't know but it works as expected.
  7. Have you tried just downloading the *.exe file from OSM for your map and let that do the install.
  8. Thanks 'keystone', I won't wait for a well done good show - cheers.
  9. Forgot to say I have used MapSetToolKit_v1.77 for years with no problems other than from my lack of knowledge. Although I do tend to use the downloaded maps instal *.exe file if it is available to do the hard work. I then use MapSetToolKit to edit/add the Style *.typ file.
  10. The short answer is just leave the 'Overview map' entry blank. I never use it in Mapsource or Basecamp. Don't know if this will help:- In 'MapSeToolKit' select 'install', select TDB file navigate to your map directory and select the *.tdb file. It will then populate the form with the info that it finds in the file. Add a registry name that matches (I think it gets overwritten anyway). In the overview map I select exactly the same 'named' file as it has in the TDB entry BUT this time select the *img file. These are my entries for an OpenStreetMap which is similar to yours. These are all found in the the maps directory. Mapset name:- OSM generic routable Registry name OSM generic routable Product Code 6 Family ID 2000 TDB file:- C:\Garmin\Maps\OSM generic routable\63240000.tdb Overview map:- C:\Garmin\Maps\OSM generic routable\63240000.img Maps Directory:- C:\Garmin\Maps\OSM generic routable TYP file:- C:\Garmin\Maps\OSM generic routable\DGillies.typ If you still have a problem leave the Overview map entry blank (not really neaded unless you use it). The type file is the map style map you may not have one and you don't actually need one, just leave it blank. If you leave it blank it picks up the style that the map was compiled in. The one mentioned is my own style file. If anyone would like a copy then please email me.
  11. Coming back to the original poster:- Okay, it feels like there should be a way to upload from GSAK to geocaching.com, but I'm not finding the answer. My cous' said that you can do it through a macro one at a time. Seems like a lot of work. Is there an option to upload all my finds at once to geocaching.com from GSAK? If so, how? In GSAK go to the 'Geocaching.com access' drop down menu and select 'Publish Logs...' Use the fetch and edit options in the 'pop up' window to get the caches into the option form , edit the logs and publish logs. Can't be simpler than that.
  12. That sounds reasonably accurate to me. Anything better should be treated as a bonus. In Ibiza Town we realised quite a few were gone or had been replaced by bits of paper for logs, after that we didn't try too hard. However out of the city caching was wonderful.
  13. Etrex 30 will take a 'kmz' map format done using Google Earth.
  14. This also drives me 'nuts'. I have the latest BaseCamp. When I select an individual cache and right click, I get the 'Open' option. However when I select multiple caches and right click, the 'Open' option is not there, unlike as suggested by a previous reply. Also I noticed in the 'Edit' dropdown menu the 'Adavanced' option is always greyed out, I wondered if this has anything to do with it.
  15. Using GSAK. Use macro Google_Map_V3.gsk to produce the map page, then select the menu drop down on the map and select Ordanace Survey. Thanks to the Geocaching_Uk Facebook group.
  16. Funnily enough I was asked that question a few nights ago. Of my 2135 (ish) finds, only 48 are premium member caches and nearly all were to do with 3 series that I did in one small area near Dorchester. And nope they were no different to the 'norm', in fact one series IMHO was rubbish. However as has been said the other benefits are well worth the price of premium membership. Only today I downloaded in one gulp 500+ caches in Cyprus our next holiday destination.
  17. If you use Firefox as your browser install 'Greasemonkey' then download and install a script called 'Gtranslate' for firefox.
  18. Try using Mozilla Firefox as your browser.
  19. I also have the same problem when using a smart phone. The process of tapping the screen and the cache window appearing is very slow. The solution for me and its not very good seems to be, zoom in until you only have the one icon, tap the icon with the very tip of your finger (once every few seconds) whilst keeping an eye on the area under your tapping finger, as soon as you spot the cache name pop up in a small window, stop tapping immediately (if you don't then by tapping again it seems to cancel the request for the cache details window). Once you have spotted the cache name pop up it takes another second or two for the details window to appear. Due to how the touch screens work the dryer your fingers the worse it may be. Try 'lightly' licking the very tip of your tapping finger and try again, a bit unhygienic but it seems to improve matters.
  20. Thanks guys for the clarification, especially a pointer to the code which makes a small bit of sense to me. Re-visited the site and gave permission for it to access my Geocaching account (so much for no, no, no), this appears to be much the same as giving 'GSAK' permission. Not sure what I'll do with it but that's what I thought about 'GSAK' which I now use pretty much full on. Once again thanks for the clarification - cheers.
  21. I've heard mention of 'project gc' so I thought I'd have a look. So I went to this Link and after a few seconds it flashed up the message that it had noticed that I was running an 'ad blocker' on my system blah! blah! blah! Now I don't mind website cookies that interact with there own website BUT ones that read other data on my system are a complete NO! No! no! So no I will not be making use of 'project gc' now or ever.
  22. Nope, never had a double beep at swich off and can't see how to select it even if I wanted it. A lovely new 'feature' with the latest software is a switching off screen that appears for @4 seconds upon switching off, however as usual no documentation, so for the first few times you are left wondering what does it mean, do I have to do something extra, or do we just ignore it and let it do its own thing. As it turns out 'do nothing' appears to be the answer. Other than that a lovely GPS(espeacially the compass feature - doh! didn't mean to mention that).
  23. Thanks to 'a4gom' for the link to the <name>.map files directory, been looking everywhere for that. I also use 'OruxMaps' which is an Android App that will display <name>.img map files. It also has a geocaching function that will read a loaded <name>.gpx file and do all the usual. Another plus point if you use a <personalized>.typ file with your Garmin maps on your GPS is that it is easy just to copy the <map>.img file that you have loaded onto your GPS into the correct OruxMap folder and then you have your own themed map. Its nice and handy to see the same map style that you have been using on your GPS for a number of years.
  24. The link to the 'crypto tool' now appears to be broken.
  25. On a very wet and windy Sunday morning in the UK the post from 'KinkyD' brought back memories of two warm and sunny holidays in Ibiza. It entailed a double visit to GC3TM1N , decoded at home then when the padlocked cache was in our hand there was even more of the above to decode. Oh! yes it had been placed by a German Cacher (whom we met as he had a nearby business) and they do love their puzzles. My wife laboriously wrote down the second part of the clue. A you can imagine one miss-pelt letter would be disaster. However we failed to decode part two which was done in the same code. We had to wait until we were home and in further contact with the owner, he gave the hint that although we had decoded the second part correctly (it just looked like 'gobble-degook') it was actually now in an offset code (we were on holiday 'give us a break'). However another lovely holiday ensued and another smiley face appeared. Cheers to 'KinkyD' for bringing back the memories and from his post in showing us via Google Earth a park in the south.
