    VQ-2

    NAS Brunswick, Ga.

    Retired there in 1973

Served on many ships, bases and deployments, got a good education, saw the world and met a lot of great people. I'd go back tomorrow if they would let a 72 year old fahrt back in.

Used to use the old Loran "A" crossing the Atlantic in P2V's, Thats well before we got GPS. It's pretty easy now what with WAAS and DGPS.

  2. A good walking stick is a must. keeps a lot of briars out of the way.

A tight baseball cap to keep stuff out of your hair.

No matter how tight I braid my long hair, it still gets caught in every limb I duck under.

Don't believe the cache owner when they say that there are no briars. Wear the briar pants anyway.

Look very carefully at the satellite photos for a cache in the woods. The first way you think is best may not be the best way. How do I know that? Briars! There can almost always be another way.

Don't wear you best clothes and shoes out to even the easiest cache because one is not enough.

Boots and briar pants. briar pants and boots. Did I say briar pants and boots?

  3. $309.99 at J&R now too. That's where I got mine.

J&R sells through Amazon. Same pricing.

I just ordered my PN-40 from Amazon last night. Supposed to get it next Wednesday. Been using my garmin 650 paperless and have been able to find 96 caches in the last 21 days. Looking forward to using the new toy in the woods.

  4. Can someone direct me to a comparison chart or explain the major differences between these two units?

I'm looking for a Geocaching unit as we already have a Garmin Nuvi 650 for road directions. Have set it up for paperless Geocaching and it works great. We just want to get one that works better under the trees.

    Thanks OB n Sue

  5. I have spent the last two days loading and reloading the Advanced Nuvi Macro. I went to the link that you have put in the forum.

I have a Nuvi 650. I can not get the individual databases to load.

Call me stupid but am I suppose to create each individual database by filtering in GSAK? or is the program suppose to do it for me.

I was not clear on that. Please note I am not a programmer such as you so I am still learning the ins and outs of this geocaching and how to improve our game.

I would appreciate your patience in tryin to help me with this problem.

    Thanks a lot,

Please load and run Pilotsnipes macro to get a feel for the process. His tutorial will get you up and running quickly. http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com/index.html

Hi, I finally found out my problem with the program running. I had more than one copy of the program and all files associated with it. So I was constantly reloading the old database into the poi loader. I thank you for all of your help and thanks for your help

I ran the tutorial a couple of days ago. It was a great help but did not tell me how to do the categories such as benchmarks and easy grabs from page one of this forum.

  8. Hello, I am new to Geocaching and enjoyed reading all the comments about cemetery caching. I used to be in the land-clearing business and one day while clearing for a new road, I saw a straight line of objects off to the side of the road. I got off the bulldozer and checked to see what they were as God doesn't grow or put things in straight rows. I discovered about a dozen small graves. Some of them had caved in. Some had stones around the grave. Others were markers made of cypress slabs. Thats what I had seen in a straight row. The cypress slabs were all weathered, worn and unreadable. I contacted an old man with the local historical society and he told me that must be the children's cemetery that he had heard about. He said that had it become lost in time and I must have found it. He told me he heard it was put out of town because the children had died from a cholera epidemic back in the early 1800s. He was going to have the Historical society mark it and have it preserved. You know I haven't been back there or even thought about it in over 25 years till reading the above posts. So tomorrow I will go find it again and see what's there. Maybe put a Geocache nearby for remembrance.

    Best regards

  9. Which method did you use to get the data to your nuvi?

I used this one: http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com/index.html and I had to select the "manual" option in the Garmin POI Loader and then specify 1000 ft for the notification.

The directions are pretty clear, and my above statement will make sense after reading it.

Yes thats the one we used. I set it to 880 yards. Guess I need to go back and reset it.

    Thanks OB

  10. Nubee here; Just did all the programming and updating and loading all the Geocashes into our Nuvi 650. According to the info sheet for geocaching with the Nuvi's I am supposedto be getting alerts as we drive by a cache. We reset the alert function from zero to 880 yards. Tested it today and no luck.

However 3 out of 3 searches with the Nuvi put me on to the cache within 3 to 4 feet. Pretty awsome.

Hope some one can tell me how to turn the alert feature on.

    Thanks in advance OB
