Belated congrats to The Huskies - great stuff! I have enjoyed finding some of your hides - how about a few more!
  2. Should be a great hike - and the weather looks good too!!
  3. My suggestion is to leave one car at Suikerbossie, go UP Hout bay corner (rather than down - rather more tricky according to some accounts?) then across the top and down Corridor Ravine to a 2nd car parked in Theresa Avenue below the Pipe Track. That would be a bit easier with the car arrangements too. Of course, it depends on how many there will be to be transported between cars . . .
  4. Seem to recall reading somewhere that Spilhaus is not recommended as a down route . . .
  5. Nay! If some geocachers get a kick out of boosting their cache totals thro' a PT so be it, but I cannot see any great sense of satisfaction or achievement in that. I would rather spend a whole day or even 8 days as we did recently on finding a really quality cache than pick up 100s of throw-aways.

Let me add my (some belated!) congratulations to the following recent milestoners: TomTwoGates: 1100 Cism: 1000 MnCo: 800 Ralph1dc: 600 AndyT1: 700 The Pooks: 800 Brianhfox: 200 Wishing you all continued great geocaching and thanks for your contributions to this great activity! . . . and thanks to all for the congratulation on my own milestone - it's been a lot of fun (and exercise! ) - done some great caches and made some fine friends along the way!
  7. Oh oh . . . just seen on the Matroosberg web page http://www.matroosberg.com/activities/4x4.html that the 4X4 trail needs about 6 hours + a further hour for stopping to admire views @ various points, so that would throw a big spanner into my plans unless we would be able to start earlier?? I had seen a time up of 1h 20mins elsewhere - but it seems that is only to the start of the snow!
  8. Hi All, here is a link for the Matroosberg FB page . . . http://www.facebook.com/pages/Matroosberg-Private-Nature-Reserve/447597915289 with useful info & some nice recent photos. Unless anyone else has room in their vehicle and will be returning by early evening, I will be going in my own (non-4X4) car from Simon's Town departing around 06h00-06h30 and doing a 'couple' of roadside caches along the way to meet up at the Very Cherry cache as proposed & then hitch a ride up the mountain in one of the 4X4s. I have to be back in ST by 18h30 and so would need to time my return accordingly. It takes around 2hrs to CT airport from the Reserve entrance and therefore approx. 2.5 hrs back to ST (via Baden Powell Drive (R310). So any return trip delays/deviations would need to be rather limited. Anyone who would like a ride on that basis is most welcome. My mobile is 082 057 1636 forshaw.chris@gmail.com
  9. Playing devils advocate.... do we want geocaching to "Go Big"? I quite like the smaller community. I quite like having an ethos of placing caches (mainly) in really cool spots I like intimate ECs I dread the "Micro Spew" that has besieged the States I dread having geocaching paths beaten out to our caches I dread the thought of 1000s of inane caches ....whats wrong with NOT promoting geocaching...? I think I'm with you CapeDoc on this one. Although it should not be exclusive, it would be a pity if geocaching became a more main-stream mass-participation activity as this would change its nature completely - most likely for the worse . . .
  10. Check out this forum http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=277184 - about a geocache being blown up & goecacher arrested in UK!! Good reminder to be careful when hiding caches in urban settings!
  11. Nice description of the route here: http://www.meridian.org.za/shownews.asp?ID=558 and here (with photos) http://realtravel.com/e-144922-cape_town_entry-hiking_hiddingh_ascension_on_tm Have a great walk everyone!
  12. what is the point of that, your stats now show "920 Finds on 918 unique Geocaches" as far as i know a cache can't be moved to a "substantial" new location, any change in coordinates alerts the reviewers and anything over the saturation guideline can't be done without the reviewer anyway, in which case they recommend the old be archived and a new one placed As an example - Keyser's Cache - GC1V096. Found it - then it got muggled - was moved to completely (substantively) different location (ie. not the same kind of hide) - found it again. In other words, it was effectively a new cache.
  13. I think it is acceptable/reasonable to log a find more than once if the original cache was moved (for whatever reason) to a substantively new location and therefore had to be re-found. I have done this for two cache finds.

  18. This looks like The Sentinel GCWETW (Hout Bay). Photo seems to have been taken from somewhere to the north of this peak
  19. HMS Birkenhead (GC2N4F1 SS:Birkenhead by: paddawan) Hi All Just a quick heads up on a talk to be given on the above ship (from launch to incredibly tragic sinking with massive loss of life) by author Martin Fine (wrote 'Birkenhead Revisited') on Weds 30 March at Simon's Town Museum (17h30 for 18h00 start) R15 (incl. wine + snax) Call Margaret on 021-7823298 for more info if required. If a few geocachers show up & are hungry after the talk - we could always pop over to the Pescado across the road for pizza or seafood nutritional support & general chat! See you there!
  20. The correct cache number for this "Out of this world" cache is GC1F7ZF
  21. Just adding my appreciation for all the great work being done!
  22. yes please! - am pretty flexible up to 4 April then away for a month after that
  23. We await further enLIGHTenment!
  24. Re. The 'Cape Mountain Goats' hike to Joshua Penny Cave & Henzz's recent Joshua Penny cache, the correct cache code is GC2NWMA. Sounds like a fine hike - have a great time! Unfortunately I will not be able to join it as we will be hiking up Orange Kloof as part of MnCo's event cache that day (GC2JYRA)
