  1. I have tried the Delorme supplied, CR-V3 battery in my own PN-40. Its life was maybe 3 hours of regular use. One day, it stopped taking a charge so I bit the bullet and bought a Cab-Bat 2 years ago and have never looked back. The longest I've used the Cab-Bat continuously has been a full day and a half, lets call that 12 hours before one bar was showing. I've had zero issues with the PN-40 locking up, etc.... I have not seen any recent links so did a search for them: Cab-Bat Delorme PN Series GPS Battery
  2. You sure can. I have a CabBat and it charges in the PN-40, from the USB port. Not only that, CabBat lasts all day ! Great stuff !
  3. Thanks all for the answers. The disc and nail are located on a concrete seawall. I mentioned that there are not many (like maybe "none") in the area who benchmark. Wish there were a mentor near to drop the angle on the learning curve just a bit.
  4. Was out Geocaching today and stumbled upon a Survey Disc labeled "ECC" and what I believe to be its associated nail that I have not been able to locate in the USGS catalog. When up on the USGS site searched by the benchmark label and then did a radial search. NADA, zip. Location is: W 36 49'57.64 N 076 17'45.05 Here is the disc: The nail was located approximately 20' west Any help on this one? Benchmark recovery has been an interest; would like to run into another Benchmarker in the Hampton Roads (Norfolk, VA) area.
  5. Ah, well spoken. Kudos from a Geocacher that is very interested in benchmarking.
  6. Thank you for all the hard work!!
  7. Geeze, the last few pages of the PN-40 topic was beginning to read like a Chevy v/s Ford bar-gument! The PN40 and Oregon are both fine products; differences are largely a matter of personal taste. Have had my PN-40 since early December and just loaded the new firmware. Really like the new paperless Geocaching features, the quick 3-D/WAAS lockup etc. Would like to fix it so the screen would not go to "night mode" when the PN40 decides its night. I'm using the Duracells also. With the backlight off, they will last a full day of Geocaching. I had bought the Lithium battery pack from a vendor on Amazon. Bad mistake! It was a Chinese battery pack that would only take a surface charge regardles of how much conditioning I tried. Eventually went with me to go in Best Buys battery recycle bin. BTW: My PN40 WORKS GREAT!
  8. Here is GV1913 located in Petersburg, VA. Its on the abutment of a railroad bridge where the CSXT goes over the Norfolk Southern main line between Norfolk, VA and Roanoke, VA. This is also a historic area which added to the hunt. This would approximately be the western flank of the Army of Northern VA during the defense of Petersburg, VA. The Battle of the Crater took place approx 3 miles to the NE. RadioKrafter Chesapeake, VA
  9. Logged my first Benchmark on the CSX (ex Seaboard RR) mainline through Petersburg, VA. RR MP's, at least on the East Coast, are fairly stable. Employee time tables are referenced by MP #. F'instance, the RR might issue a "Slow Order" to a train crew on a certain route; (train speed to be slower than normal track speed) between MPXXX and MPXXX. On Norfolk Southern, mile posts are concrete posts, approximately 3' tall or, the mileage is on some types of signals. One that reads "751" = MP 75.1.
  10. I ordered a PN-40 from Amazon. As an FYI, DeLorme's www site has instructions how to import files into Topo. The link is here Here are some specific tips for the PN-20 and an announcement of an upcoming firmware change for both the PN-20 and PN-40 can be found here.
  11. Howdy I'm new also and share your enthusiasm. You might check E-Bay as some have suggested. Get something inexpensive, use it for a while and get your bearings (I know, a horrible pun) on what direction to move up to. When you move up, there's an old saying: buy once, cry once. Best
  12. Not a bad deal at all at Amazon.com. They also have a package for $346.43: DeLorme Earthmate PN-40 by DeLorme Map Library Subscription Card for use with Topo USA 7.0 and Earthmate PN Series by DeLorme Transcend 16 GB SDHC Class 6 Flash Memory Card with Compact Card Reader
  13. Hi there! I'm a newbie to Geocaching and live in S. Chesapeake, VA. Am off Rt 17 about 7 miles north of the NC/VA Line. I see by my zip code there are several caches located along the new bike trail (that was Rt 17) which runs along the Martha Washington Canal. Several are within walking distance. Am also interested in Benchmark hunting. Just wondering if anyone in the area might enjoy some company. Happy Caching!
