  1. Thanks for making this topic an excellent example as to why there will not be an off-topic section of the forums. Ancedotally, queries to local geocaching get-togethers illustrate that the forums have become so combatitive that veteran geocachers steer clear of the forums. Some dominating personalities have create a negative environment for communication. This is sad, and one reason why there hasn't been an off-topic forum in the past.

No. It is supposed to be a teaching tool. Not a humiliation tool. For some it would be a badge of honor, anyway. Tupperware counterrevolutionary.
  3. That is intentional. Friendships start by discussing similar interests. Once you create your friends you can feel free to exchange email addresses, phone numbers, and build on those friendships offline. In addition, regional forums are made to discuss regional interests. Get together in the real world and establish your friendship there. I've made many friends through the forums, and it didn't come about during off-topic discussions about Iraq or the hot new toy this Christmas.
  4. Cute. Why issue a request to check into a problem when you can act helpless and do nothing but complain? jeff35080, if you have a specific Pocket Query ID, list it here if it doesn't go through and I'll see if it was delivered. We can check our mail logs to make sure it at least made it to your ISP's mail server.
  5. I am absolutely appalled by the behavior I have seen by some users in the forums these last few days. There is a small group of organized individuals that wish to turn these forums into their own personal playground. This will stop now. In the past, the forums existed much like the wild west, and there was no need for moderation. As the forums have grown and the number of users, more moderation has been necessary to keep civil discussions civil. Unfortunately there are a few ankle biters - those who contribute absolutely nothing to discussions but try and twist them to their own means, or derail them completely. The mods have been valiantly asking politely, pleading and have been nothing but patient with these folks. In return they are ridiculed, ignored, and their words twisted through innuendo. Geocaching is supposed to be fun, people. This forum was created for friendly discussion, not confrontation and malice. The wild west is over and you cannot act the way you used to. This behavior will no longer be tolerated. Grow up and find something more constructive to do.
  6. There are no plans to have an off-topic forum. The intent of Geocaching.com and these forums is to be a waypoint for people to get together and discuss topics related to the hobby of geocaching, and its sister sports like Benchmark hunting and Travel Bugs. The ultimate goal is to get you, the participant in these forums, outdoors.

    Gpx Virus

Yes, zip them. It's a false positive for a virus.
  8. They were dumb so I removed them. I'll get them off the member list page too.
  9. After 9 days of having the forums offline, we are back in business. Old topics have been reincarnated, accounts have been imported, but there are still a few quirks and bugs to terminate before we're completely satisfied. Gone are the days where you could have another name in the forums. In these forums your login username is your name, so there's nothing we can do about that. Some people may notice that I am no longer Jeremy (Admin), for example. if you have a & or strange character in your username (or possibly password), you may have trouble logging in. We're looking to see how we can combat some of the strange characters, but we may eventually have to "outlaw" some characters from being in usernames or passwords due to integration issues between the two forums. Polls were imported, well, poorly. We'll look into reimplementing them but at least for now the posts still exist as well as the discussions around each poll. Responding to posts before November 19th may result in the injection of html from the post into the quote section. You may have to strip it out before posting; otherwise it could look ugly. I have been copying the quote from the info below the post for a clean copy. Since the Geocaching.com Discussion Forum is for logged in users only, you will not see it displayed when you are viewing the board as a guest. In addition, signature lines and Avatar images will not display for guests. If you wish to see them, log in. The cookies in the new forums keep you logged in for quite a while. If you make changes to your profile on Geocaching.com, you will need to click on the "discuss geocaching" link on Geocaching.com while logged in for your forum profile to update. This includes avatars, signature lines, titles (for premium members), passwords, and your username. The register link in the forums will also redirect you to the page that updates your profile. We'll be putting together a Q&A page once the bugs are worked out and the forum is humming along.
  10. Cub Scout to Life scout. Went into military school before I could finish Eagle. Brotherhood member of Order of the Arrow. Wife received the equivalent of Eagle in the Sea Scouts. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  11. The latest batch of travel bugs were mis-categorized as geocoins. It was just a flip of a database switch that fixed it. Nothing to see here. Move along Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  12. Thanks. They are bugs again. They must have been geocoins for halloween! Or perhaps an error on my part. The former excuse sounds better. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  13. Because the forums and the geocaching.com web site are two separate entities, the forums will not request updated information if your cookies are still active in the forums. The only way to tell the forums you have new profile information is to log out of the forums and log back in. I'd integrate the forums more tightly if they didn't have so many issues. I didn't want the login capabilities of geocaching.com have a performance hit by the poor performance of these forums. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  14. The short answer is yes, we do have plans to integrate other benchmarks. The bad news is we have a long way to go with other conversions we need to make before we add new features. As a result changes happen but aren't overtly noticeable since we're replacing existing functionality. I'm as frustrated as you are about not adding these features, but it is a time and resource issue. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  15. I'm actually working on the travel bug section of the site now. Once it is complete you will expect the same capabilities that you have for cache logs. My ultimate goal is to make every section of the site (geocaches, benchmarks and bugs) have the same interface. This will include editing your old messages. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  16. We're still sorting out an alternate icon for virtuals. It's hard to pin down something that isn't there, but the flag idea seems to work well. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  17. Yes. This is a new feature. I've added a lot of new capabilities for reviewers so they can review each listing faster. Hopefully the result will be faster reviews and approvals. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  18. Fixed this today. Future PQ will not have the webcam cache. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  19. Moved this to the General forum. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™

    Travel Bug Logs

I'm not sure how you were able to delete both of them at once, but there were two different logs by the same user. I restored one of them for you. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  21. I wasn't aware of the difference in x and y, but the distance calculations using Identify use the Great Circle calculation, so they are accurate. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™

Sounds like a browser specific issue. You may be able to find someone who can help you in the GPS Units and Software forum Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  23. We didn't do anything with the styles in the forums, so it may be due to a minor hiccup on the machine. InfoPop has informed us that the current machine can no longer handle our forum load, so we're looking to either upgrade ($$$) or move to a new forum service. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  24. I don't know. If you can visit it, you can visit InfoPop's site and let them know about the bug. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
  25. cacheKidds, Don't use Hotmail. They throttle emails from us. Pick a better email system for Pocket Queries if you want them in a reasonable amount of time. It generated and has been sitting in our mail queue since 10/31/2003 3:48:17 AM techjunkie, If you want a pocket query emailed immediately, make sure to make it the same day you make it. Your PQ generated around Noon PST today. Friday's are the biggest days for Pocket Queries. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location™
