I tried my first cache without the use of a GPS. I like to believe it was because it was missing.
When I first heard about geochaching, I thought it sounded cool, but way too easy using a GPS. When I was in the Army, I was VERY good with maps. I even did the landnav instruction for my unit. I figured, no problem, I would just locate a few good topo maps and use those to enhance the fun. Well, the topo maps I used in the Army are not that easy to find, and they are not cheap. I figured that it would cost over $300 just to get the maps sheets of the Houston area.
My team, TheGeoTrio, borrowed a GPS(Magellan 315) and did our first cache while visiting San Antonio to play in a paintball tourney. Even with the GPS, it took us nearly an hour to locate the right roads to get us near the cache. Then it took another 30 minutes to locate the cache. We had a pretty broad learning curve that day. We passed right by the cache once while following the coords.
Longs story short. We had so much fun that we just bought our own GPS, a Magellan 330, this last week and are anxious to get started on the caches in our local area.
I still think using my skill would be more of a challenge, and I might still do it in the future, but for now we are having a blast with a map and GPS.
