  1. Actually, I think you just described a seriously fun cache container! DO IT! Yes, but you still haven't answered my question about satisfactory rustproofing of the handle. Rustoleum paint does not adhere well to it at all. Did you try sanding the handle first? That usually does it with anything metal and then the paint should adhere to it.
  2. Wow! What a hard question. I love finding caches, but then I love hiding them too. There's nothing like finding a cache and realizing all of the hard work that went into hiding it. But when I hid a cache I know I have put a lot of hard effort into it too, and when I get a really nice log that just makes my day.
  3. You remember incorrectly. You cannot dig with anything. Your bare hands should be OK. Unless they are legal weapons like Chuck Norris has.
  4. I have done it. I wrote the reviewer because the cache was archived and he said the original co did not answer him back so I could take it over. So I did. It's in a park in a nice location.
  5. Well I take it that some folks don't like to read blogs. That's okay; they're not for everyone. Since you asked I'll answer your question as to which one I read. I read http://www.cachecrazy.com/. It happens to be a blog I write for every Thursday. We have different articles just about everyday. We cover just about anything to do with Geocaching, as well as hiking, camping, and outdoor stuff. Check us out. I also read Geocaching Online, as well as Outdoor Blogger. Read on and enjoy.
  6. What GPSr Make and Model do you use? Garmin Vista HCx On a scale of 1 (terrible) to 10 (best) what would you rate your GPSr? 8 What is the best feature of your GPSr you like best? Ease of use What is the worst thing about your GPSr? Rubber Band around it. It comes off if it gets hot, and only 30 characters for notes. But it is still able to do paperless caching to an extent. And finally If you were to get a new GPSr, which one would you want next? Maybe the Magellan Explorist GC, but not totally sure. Thanks so much for helping us out. We tape two episodes of Geocaching World every Monday at 6:30pm EST #LIVE through RVNN.tv. See you there!
  7. I was using a backpack that I carry my laptop in when I am traveling. Once it started to rip from all of the brush I tend to go through I changed bags. Now I use a fanny pack that I got at Gander Mountain last Christmas for $20.00. I love it. It has plenty of pockets that are all different sizes. If I need to I can attach the suspenders, but I don't usually use them. It has really proven to be a nice pack.
  8. That depends on whether or not you were holding it when the lightening struck. Actually I've never been out while there was a thunderstorm so I don't really know.
  9. The problem is that all of the Charter Members ate all of the jelly donuts. That's why there are none.
  10. I received mine and I have already sent it out on its way. I created my own mission and then sent it out. I also want to know if anyone has received one of the Explorists yet? I haven't heard of anyone getting one yet, and I know I haven't received one yet. Anybody know?
  11. When my son turned 13 we got him an account. I did not even think about him logging the caches we found together. Nice idea though. I'll have to give it some thought. Although I'm not sure how many of them we did together. I'll have to check my journal. Thanks for the help.
  12. But that's my bias. I'm just trying to understand the other extreme. Some people like to hide P&G's because they don't really have to maintain them. I mean come on, they only have a log. The CO does not have to continuously check the swag and refill it when it gets empty. Also, I don't like to ever just put TFTC. I always try to write something interesting about my time spent there looking for it. I love to read long logs. It really helps you know you've done your job right. But then again this is just my opinion.
  13. Isn't taking them with you while flying essentially the same thing? No. Because when a cacher takes it along, it is traveling with a geocacher, who will watch over it. Not being crammed through a damaging postal sorting machine and thrown around a post office, possibly getting lost in the mail. A Trackable's life is risky enough. IMO. I agree about not mailing them without the owners consent. I don't like the idea of someone just picking up my TB/GC and mailing it to someone else in another state. That's not really traveling. If I pick one and take it on the aircraft with me that is different. I am taking it to the next cache. It's also important to make sure of the mission of the TB/GC. Some people take them in the total opposite direction than where they are supposed to go. Not good.
  14. No one wants GC to get a black eye. I would ask the FTF if he knew of the hours. Then ask him to edit his log and leave out the night time stuff. Not all CP's have the hours listed. Not all Parks have the hours listed. And as mentioned, sometimes you just miss the signs that are posted. Case in point: The other day I went for a cache that has been in a park for quite some time. So I was not going for a FTF. I drove all the way down this little road and parked. I looked for the cache, but couldn't find it. I then went back a few days later iwth a friend and as I was about to drive to the same parking spot my friend pointed out the sign that clearly stated "Maintenance Vehicles Only". I had not even seen it the day before. We did not drive down there a second time, and we still did not find the cache. Must be hidden really well. Anyways, let's all play by the rules so we keep GC held up in a good light. Something else to think about is how many FTF does this person already have? That will give you an idea of whether he's a FTF junkie or not. Maybe he really doesn't care about hours. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. Happy Caching.
  15. I am glad you posted this discussion. You said you are fairly new and this will help you to become a better cacher. The guy you met really has problems. Don't let his problem become one of yours. You seem like a nice person since you did not retaliate. Kudos to you. Geocaching is a fun sport. Yes, some people are in it for the numbers, but a lot are not. I am one who is not all about the numbers. I really enjoy taking the family out to enjoy the outdoors. I have been to several events, and met several cachers on the trail, and they have all been very nice. No one has treated me with anything but respect. I truly hope you do go to some events and meet some really nice people. If you can get to the Geowoodstock event on July 2 you'll meet lots of people and have lots of fun. Check it out. In the meantime, get out there and find some caches. If you're ever out my way, Dalton PA, my wife and I would be glad to have you cache along. Don't let the numbers get to you; just go out and enjoy yourself. Cache on my friend.
  16. I just started leaving my sig item which is handmade by me. It is a key chain made of deer antler and I braided the rope part of it. To see a picture of it look to the left. Everyone that sees them says they want one. I never thought of watching the caches to see if anyone says anything about picking one of them up. I'll have to do that now. Besides I need to make more of them. I also have left some really neat glass sculptures that I got at the dollar store when they were going out of business. They were laser etched on the inside and really look cool.
  17. AZ has a good idea. I used something similar on one of my puzzle caches and it gets great reviews. Check it out. It is GC27N2Q. I think it would be an awesome way to give out the cords to a final cache.
  18. So if I understand this the first Friday of every month is Geocaching Casual Friday? If so I'll join in somehow. Maybe I'll wear my Geo pin on my shirt or something. Thanks for the idea.
  19. I guess I have to be thankful because my wife likes going out with me, especially if we are going out when we are away on a trip. The kids also like going out and now everyone has there own membership. I also have two older sons who are out on their own and they have gone out with me, but they would not go out unless I am with them. My oldest might buy a gps and start going by himself, but I'll wait and see it that happens. Don't give up on those you want to convert. It may take years, but it's worth it.
  20. And another thing; why is it that micros and nanos are hidden where there are perfectly good spots for a larger cache? I know, it's about the numbers. Oh well.
  21. I only have one micro hidden and it was done out of fun and making things harder. Other than that I only use micros in my multis. My wife and I found our first nano last weekend. We had never seen something so small. I think a lot of this just has to do with numbers. I'm more in it for the fun.
  22. That is very cool. I would trade one of mine for it for sure. Check out my avitar and you'll understand.
  23. Its true. He caches under the name of Alamogul. Huh! Must be a different Chuck Norris from the one we are all thinking of! .... like the movie star .... Picture from among many in Alamogul's gallery NoNoNo. He's the little man that lives behind Chuck Norris' beard. He rooms with the fist. I thought there was a cache behind his beard?
  24. I checked out the photos on the site and they are pretty good. Maybe I'll submit one too.
