  1. 1 walking around with a cel phone in your hand allows you to "absently" look at, over, under and around things 2. calling "here kitty kitty works if you're looking in a tree or bush 3. realizing that most peoploe don't really care 4. recognizing that when someone starts looking with "that look" it's time to go. Had that once when I was searching near a parked car.
  2. OK. I was worried because Ive been lookig around for some time and never heard that limitation. Thanks. Will it address a micro SD card larger than 2GB?
  3. there's probably a small internal battery that maintains data during main battery change. It's possible that battery is dead or the terminals are corroded. I had that happen on a dell desk top mobo. Is there any mention of an internal battery in the manual?
  4. Looking to acquire a new GPS. Looking at the etrex vista hcx. Target web site states that the card port is only compatible with preloaded Garmin map cards. Does that mean I have to buy garmin maps and and that I can't buy maps on a CD and copy to my own card?
  5. what would you like to find? Personally, I don't really do it for the swag. I started with a handfull of trinkets at the dollar store and now have a selection of things I traded for. Nothing i expect to keep, it's just swag for the next cache. The kids think it's exciting to see "what's in the box" and I teach them that they need to leave something better than they take. One good source is my kids' desk drawer. If they go with me and want to trade, i have them open up their drawers and grab a few things. Next time you're in the dollar store, or 5 below, or lowes, and you see one of those "impulse" racks that are near the check out, glance over and see if there's anything that says to you " that's cool" if the price is right pick up a couple.
  6. We've all been there. To date I know of nobody that was born with 1000 finds. It gets easier, as you begin to realize that 1. the hide should be difficult to find if you're not looking for it 2. the hide should be reasonably protected from the elements, wind, rain, wild animals. 3. there are "typical" places to hide a cache. The first time we went to find a light pole cache, it took us 30 minutes to find the "usual" location. Once we had that, we understood that location and that becomes easy. I usually print out the simple description, decode the hints and go looking. If I don't find on the first trip, I go back and read the logs. Having an image in my mind of the location, the logs often provide additional clues. And there's always the possibility that it isn't there anymore.
  7. I'd be interested on learning what device people are using for paperless caching. Seems in reading the forums that the palm is most widely supported. If you're successfully paperless caching, please reply with make model and software you're using.
  8. OK, found the thread at GPSPassion. DLded the 4 dlls references, copied them to the beeline directory, no love. I appreciate the assistance you've given me so far. I realize it's my problem to solve, not yours. Before I abandon this thread, one final question: I had a login at GPSpassion. For some reason, the user name/password combination no longer works. Do you know of a POC I can contact mto resolve the issue? I've tried resetting the password. The email comes to my inbox correctly, says I've reset the password but it still doesn't work.
  9. Thanks for the quick response. Installed miopocket in accordane with the instructions to run off an SD card. No luck, same message as the other 2 apps. Are there cab files I need to find to complete my CE installation? The only wrinkle is that the instructions were for a C310, I have a C310x.
  10. I have a Mio C310X gps and recently discovered a keystroke sequence thatr permits me tom boot minto the Win CE 4.2 Operatingt system. Has anyone successfully used that platform to do paperless geocaching? I've tried both GPX Sonar and GPX view. Each installs smoothly but comlains that the program or a required component isn't present. I suspect the CE installation is a "stripped down" version consisting only of the peices Mio needs to run. I've tried each both inthe default directory and on the memory card to no avail. Has anyone used a Mio C310x to view cache pages in the field?
  11. thanks for the suggestion. Dlded and installed GPXsonar, same result. I suspect the Mio C310X GPS doesn't contain a full installation of Win CE, only the portions it needs, and as a result the apps fail. I will post a fresh question referenceing Mio C310X and see if anyone has run those traps.
  12. My GPS uses Windows CE 4.2 as the back end. I have recently found a keystroke combination that will permit me to boot into the OS directly. Is there an application that I can use in Windows CE 4.2 to read cache pages? Not looking for anything fancy. prior to posting I installed GPX view. The installation page says it's for "PocketPC 2000 or later. Installed the app, but it won't run, complaining that the app is missing one of it's components.
  13. thanks. I always seem to err opn the side of too much. I suppose of I get a unit that accepts external cards it reallhy doesn't mattter anyway.
  14. I have downloaded the surftech utility. It runs, but the bottom edge of he window is cut off. Does anyone know how to reduce the size of the utility's display window, or turn the display 90 degrees? I would like to eliminate the jumping I am expertiencing at walking speeds by turning static navigation off.
  15. If I choose a palm with 16MB of ram, and Dl cache pages with 5 logs each, about how many caches will I be able to store without an external memory card?
  16. I hava a small GPS that can be easily mistaken for a blackberry. especially when I'm holding it to my ear and talking to it. I have a fairly long one sided conversation that i use while absently wandering around kicking things and leaning against things. In the end, so long as it looks natural at a glance you probably won't get a second look. Having my children with me also helps, although I need to remind them not to say " hey day, I found it over here!!! Also, calling " here kitty Kitty" usually works in bushes and up trees.
  17. my 2 cents: so long as you make it clear in the cahe description page that you ain't signing the log until you find the tb key. Personally I'd probably not bother looking for it, but to each his own. More fair in my opinion if you do 2 caches: 1 with a combination and the other with a lock that accepts the combination. You could do something like a word lock on a padalock hasp and put the whole mess in a large lock n lock to keepm the elements out. That way you stil linik 2 caches, but they can bne fgound indep0endently or together and count as 2 logs.
  18. I haven't gotten it to work, but here is where I am: Downloaded pocket quiery in .LOC format. Used GSAK to convert it to a .KAL file. Backed up the Igo.db file to a CF card, then copied it to my PC. Made a copy for safety. Opened POI explorer, inported Igo.db file, then imported .KAL file. Shows as a POI group in the database. Exported the whole mess back to igo.db and then uploaded it to the Mio using the built in restore command. The group name shows up, but there are no waypoints. When I tried to delete the empty group, got a message CE message box stating that mio had to close. Only solution was to restore the safety database file, then all was well. What tinkering haven't I tried yet?
  19. Ok thanks. another question regarding the same unit. If i do not purchase extra maps, what exactly is included with the unit? A blank screen with a blip and a pointer? If I download waypoints are they stored in the unit or on the SD card? Are purchased maps stored in the unit or on the SD card? Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.
  20. I'm considering a new GPS. I looked on Garmin's website and noticed the only difference between the color Etrex Legend and Vista is one has a "digital compass" and the other doesn't. The feature I'm looking for is bearing to target arrow and distance to target, which my present highway unit doesn't suport. Is bearing to target what they are calling digital compass or do both units provide an arrow showing the direction to target?
  21. I also have a Mio C310X. How did you turn off static navigation? the only thing I can find is routing options to route using cars, bike or pedestrian. Is that it? I have been able top backup the poi fuile but cannot find the proper program to edit it. POI explorer from MIO seems to be geared toward a different unit that can read multiple CSV files directly from the SD card.
  22. I have a mip digiwalker c310X and have been looking for a way to enter caches en mmass. Not interested in the florida database, as I a not in florida. However, am intetrested in learning how you built the database file on the SD card. Could you post detailed instructions? I have been able to back up and restore POIs to the SD card, but everythig I have read says the machine neds to read from the Igo_backup.db file. Do you edit that file? with what program?

  24. Pushing this to the top one last time. If no input, will try bushwacking myself a little.
