  1. new question. Tagging onto this thread to keep things neat, orderly and organized. I'd like to upload a tracklog into OSM to add some hiking trails. I was able to move the target data from the GPSr to Basecamp. How do I get A gpx of the tracklog out of basecamp so I can upload to OSM?
  2. The point is Basecamp stores the cache data internally whereas mapsource does not. In a perfect world there would be one app that sucks in all the cache information, allows me to see the data on a map, plan store and download routes to my GPS, edit and file logs, and update status on the map. I have accomplished those functions historically using: GSAK, Mapsource, Basecamp and, until recently, Microsoft Streets and Trips. I have abandoned MST without loss of function. The biggest reason I'm clinging to Mapsource is because, while Basecamp will allow me to click on a cache and see all information, including description, last 5 logs and hint, ( invaluable information when planning a cache run) It also displays the cache name next to the icon, clogging up the map and making it illegible at all but very close zoom levels. I can instead load a GDB file and display symbol and GC code, making the map legible, but i loose all but the basic information, meaning I have no more info than Mapsource displays by default. Is there a way I can get GSAK to update Basecamp ( or Mapsource) when I use it to file found-it logs? Simply looking to change the symbol to cache found.
  3. I now have better understanding of how GSAK works under the hood. Thanks. What about Mapsource and Basecamp? My sense is Mapsource simply loads the GPX file each session, because the load tabs shows a list of recently loaded files, whether the files still actually exit or not. also there is not option to open, save or close a particular database. My sense is Basecamp, by contrast, maintains internal databases similar to how GSAK is described above, because it offer options to load particular GPX files into particular databases.
  4. ok, so your intent is to maintain all your found caches in the database. I understand now. Once I have found a cache i prefer to have it removed from the map at the next update. For me mapsource and GSAK is about planning future cache runs.
  5. im sorry you had difficulties with OSM. I've been using them for many years on multiple Garmins and they have always worked. I like the ability to add trails. Glad you found a solution.
  6. so when you do your weekly country update, you pour the new GPX on top of the pre existing data?
  7. I had a strange occurrence last week. I had planned a cache route an hour's drive from my home coordinates. Since it was an area I was unfamiliar with, I turned on the GPS, selected the cache nearest the paring coordinates for the park I was caching in, and set it to navigate on road. An hour later it turned me down a dead end road to a footpath. Horrified, I pulled over and zoomed out to get a sense of where i really needed to go. The route from there was a straight north line to the cache. In between was a blank screen. No map no nothing. I switched to geocaching and the map immediately filled in. I was able to ue the map image to manually nvigate to my desired location. Why did the geoaching car profile not have a map but the geocache profile does? All settings are the same on both profiles, except geocache car has a road navigation dashboard and is set to navigate on roads.
  8. Just when i think ive go it all figured out. there's some little detail.
  9. When I was playing the trade game I put together a cache repair kit. mini zlock bags, nano log rolls, small replacement log sheets all bundled in a denim pouch with a velcro closure,
  10. Set to Auto. Also found the calibrate setting in the same screen. Should I calibrate every time I change Batteries?
  11. I know I should slide over to the GSAK forum. However, that does not seem very active since Clyde stopped development. Question: I open GSAK, create 3 databases and pour a GPX into each database. Backup all and exit the software. When I come back the next day and open GSAK, the 3 databases are there, just the way I left them. Does anyone know whether GASK opens the original GPX files, or the backup, or keeps a third internal file it loads? I'd like to slim down the files I generate and maintain. If GSAK loads the GPX file each time it opens, I should be able to merely slip a new GPX file into the directory with the same name and GSAK would be none the wiser. If its either of the other 2 scenarios, I'd have to delete all caches from the database and reload the fresh GPX file, which is what I have been doing to date.
  12. Never did that. Gotta scare up the 'structions!!! thanks for the suggestion.
  13. I've had he same the happen to me with my brand spanking new garmin Oregon 700. I believe the direction arrow relies on movement in a consistent direction to update. Once I get close, the arrow gets less reliable and I usually use the distance counter.
  14. Like anything, each tool has a learning curve. I cached for a number of years with an Extrex Vista HCX. Then I took a hiatus (LGITW) and recently returned to the game. The buttons on the HCX were getting wonky, so treated myself to a modern Garmin. Took me several months to get comfortable with the improved technology. If aside from battery life you're happy with the cel phone, I'd recommend pulling out an old phone that still works, turn off the radio and invest in an external battery. It will extend your field time greatly and they are very light and very small these days.
  15. I assure you I do not want my account to show anything did not earn.
  16. I have oregon 700 and had similar problems. I finally figured out that if there are any characters unrecognized the entire log becomes corrupted. Now I have turned of the wifi commutativity and just enter a few words to remind me of the field experience so I can craft a proper log in GSA back home.
  17. i once got a state souvenir from Minnesota... in between 2 finds the same day in Texas!!! I had slipped a character when logging. I went back and corrected my errant log.
  18. if there was a way to do what i would immediately find another hobby. If you want to meet local cachers try looking for recent logs on nearby caches and PM.
  19. the only time I have been offered unsolicited advice I was searching for about 20 minutes for a cache that was 500 yards off a trail. A couple arrived and said: i'm the Co would you like a hint? the coordinates are a bit off. I'm here to do maintenance I politely declined, and aborted my search and moved on so they could do their maintenance.
  20. At one time i used the above technique to get pqs containing all the active traditional caches in my home state. It was a real pain to keep up to date since caches would regularly be archived and the dates kept changing to get all caches with the fewest queries. Now I just query the 1,000 nearest my caching centroid and update it the first of each month.
  21. so I If download offline data the information will stay on my phone beyond the 7 days. Thanks.
  22. I am able to syc lists with the app quite handily. Is there a way to instead sync with the outout of a PQ? Pocket queries offer a few filters not available in the list generator.
  23. Yup, and when I log an Needs maintenance I owe the CO information specific enough to allow them to bring supplies to make the appropriate repairs in a single trip. PM if doing so on the public log would be a spoiler. FYI, I have only seen the need to log a NA on 2 or 3 occasions. Each time the reviewer responded in a timely manner.
  24. another vote for OSM. In addition, if you find trails missing on the map, you can upload your tracklogs to OSM and trace them onto the map for your future use
  25. ok thanks ill have to check that out
