  1. That's what I would do. Make it .25 to get caches in the back of those rest stops, still you will miss some. And yes you will get caches that are not accessible from the interstate, but you will also get some at gas stations along the way that you will be stopping at as well as restaurants. No matter how short the distance you will get the occasional cache that is on an access road or a road that passes under an overpass. edit to remove duplicat info
  2. Try looking for caches by name instead of distance. It could be it is only showing the closest caches but the others are in there. Click on the Geocaches screen and press the menu button, Look for the "search and sort" option and click on it, then look to the bottom for the "sort by" option and click on Name option. Side note - why 3 PQs for 120 caches? Can you adjust your PQ so all caches are in one pq? That shouldn't be the issue but just minimizing possiblilities.
  3. You can load caches from GSAK into your Nuvi as either Favorites or POIs. POIs contain all the info from the cache page, but you have to be zoomed in to see them. Favorites does not contain the information but you can see from a further zoom out (most models I'm not sure about your specific model). Sounds like you are sending them as POIs try to send as favorites. Look at the top for GPS cllick on it then send waypoints. Pop up screen will appear, look at the bottom for GPS Setup button. See if that helps you see them.
  4. If you read mpilchfamily's post you will see a journey many have made, starting low tech then realizing they need more then more again. So look at your budget to see the most you can afford, not over the top but dont let price be the only decission point. The eTrex line is a good one, but remember the H is an older model which is why you can good get good prices on it now. Look at the eTrex 20 and 30 even the 10 supports paperless caching. They are good, easy to use units.
  5. Since you are a PM the easiest way is to run a PQ and then drag and drop the unzipped file to the GC. It sounds like you may have hand picked the specific ones you want to search for. If that is the case and you don't want a larger abount of caches then make a private bookmark list of those caches and create a PQ from just that list.
  6. sussamb reminded me, that when a geocache is marked found it is "moved" from the geocache file to the waypoint file. Which means if she deletes ALL the geocaches from the geocache file it still wont removed those she has marked found or any other waypoints she may have entered. She needs to click on the waypoint icon and delete all the found geocaches from there.
  7. Those "older" gps units did not have the same folder setup as the newer units of today. She does have to go into the unit and delete them. I think she can delete either one at a time, all of the same icon, or all. Tell her to go to the waypoint screen and try to hit the menu button and look to see if it doesn't say something along the lines of delete all or delete via icon. Most likely she needs to clear everything out. I don't have one of those but a friend does and I've played with it before, but not recently. Maybe someone who has one will chime in for you, but in the mean time tell her to give it a try.
  8. To get all the information on the cache page (full discription, size, d/t, and logs) yes you must use a PQ. If all you want is the location and name (maybe d/t I don't remember) you can send from cache page to gps one cache at a time. But if I am not mistaken that function has not been working for awhile. Good news is you need no software to load the PQ just unzip and drag and drop to the correct folders (listed above). You can use any of several software products to load all the info plus the pictures from the cache page. So it is just what and how much information you want. Actually, you need no additional software to go completely paperless with the GC. Run your PQ, unzip it, and drop the files in the folders noted. You're done! I usually delete the old ones, and the found logs before I copy in a clean pq, since my found caches are filtered out of my pq's. Later! mmm, that's what I said - no software to load PQ and you get all info on cache page. BUT if you want the pictures also you need the PQ and to load with GSAK or Magellan software. OR if all you want is the lat / lon and name load from cache page will work - or rather you could if the feature was working.

  10. Start by telling us what type of gps you have, that will help us help you.
  11. This is very confusing. Do you have another Geocaching account? Maybe an old name or a child's account that uses that yahoo email? If so then that is why you can't change to that email. Or is yahoo saying that email is already taken and you cannot establish an account with your desired name there? Details - What are the steps you are using and at what point in the process are you getting this message?
  12. Start by downloading the PQ to your computer. It will be a zipped file. Open it up. You will have 2 files inside. Hook your GPS to the computer. Choose "connect to PC" Once it has been recognized open it like you would a thumb drive and view the folders on the GPS Look for a folder named geocaches - there should be a .gpx file in there (the original one that comes with the gps) just drag and drop the unzipped .gpx file from your pq to that folder. Look for a folder named Waypoints - drag and drop the second file ending in -wpts.gpx into that file. Remember to breath and not panic.
  13. I love finding lonely caches and find it intersting how many people go in search of it afterwards.
  14. Similar problem with Garmin, mine was fixed by reloading the operating system. This could or could not be your and your daughter's problem. Mine happened once then again then more and more. Had nothing to do with info from cache, in fact it froze several times when not caching but using for normal navigation. My GPS was relatively new when this occurred. Call Garmin see what they say.
  15. I had a similar problem with my Garmin Nuvi, screen would just lock up. Nothing short of taking out the batteries helped. Really not good for a car gps when traveling. Called Garmin tech service and they had me reload the software. That was about 2 years ago and I haven't had that problem with it since. Cache series might just be a coincidence.
  16. Parks! SC has some great state parks with excellent caches. Even urban parks tend to have better caches than any parking lot cache (IMHO) and don't forget your county parks. You aren't to far from Edisto and Hunting state parks both of which have good caches. Also Francis Marion National Forest. In your area look for Edisto Patto caches, she puts out some good ones. Look at the map and see where the cache is located, if it is a buisness area and you aren't thrilled with those don't put it on your list. Also go to the local meetings, the locals will help clue you in on the best in your area. Once you find a style of cache you like you will be able to determine what about that style you like and be able to pick them out when you travel.
  17. This one is real close to where I grew up. I forgot all about "The Green Man", but remember it well. Might be one to check out next time I go home. Maybe even my muggle brother might come since he used was one of the teenagers driving around looking for the Green Man. Here's an article about the realGreen Man. It's really very sad, but kids will be kids. Yes kids will be kids, but by the time we came along and the story crossed into Ohio the story had evolved to the point it was a ghost story. I had know idea until I googled it there was in fact someone, a child, who was hurt. Like many teenagers, my brother and frinds were looking for the ghost. My friends and I did other "hunted" places.

  19. Start simple. Do not select a day yet, if you do you have to wait until tomorrow to try again (once you run out of your daily PQ). Do a simple search for all caches of all types from either a zip code or other point of origin. After that shows results go back and edit each section, one at a time. If you don't want all types of caches select the type you do want and submit then go on to containers and so forth. Once the PQ shows the results you want then select a day for it to run. Most likely you are putting in conflicting parameters but don't realize it.
  20. Right above the logs on each cache pages there is a block that says "x Logged Visits..." under that are icons telling you the number of those that were "found", "not found", "notes", "owner maintenance", etc.
  21. I don't think you will get any argument on pocket queries. However only listing a waymark once will not solve your problem of having to sift through all the McDonalds to find that special one. A better way already exists... just ignore the categories that don't appeal to you. In your case ignore all major departments except History (would be only 14 ignores) and then you will only see that McDonalds that happens to be listed as on the National Register of Historic Places or has a historical marker. Also shown would be other historic sites... the number of duplicates would be down significantly. You would see a courthouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the historical marker in front of it but you would not see following: the courthouse listed as a government building, the clock as a town clock, or the benchmark right at the front door. I've tried, but it just doesn't seem to work well for me. There are categories and subcategories I wouldn't even think of. Maybe I haven't put enough effort into it, I just wish it was easier to find what I'm looking for. And also I wish it would have more sharing of one's experience or memories and less "visited it", of course I wish for more of the same in geocaching logs. I'm happy for those who enjoy the site, I'm just not one of them.
  22. To be honest, I couldn't care less for "credit" of finding a Waymark. I would love to use Waymarking to learn the history of a place I'm visiting, to find the cool things that are around me either at home or away. My issue with Waymarking two fold. First, is like many, the lack of PQs. The second is a place/object being listed in multiple categories. If the categories were more a subset of the waymark and the place/object show in a search once but also display the different categories that would be better. I am not going to log a visit to a McDonald's, but I might log a visit to the first McDonald's or a McDonald's that is special in an interesting way. Have it listed once with an indication of the different categories it fits. But now if I am going to an area and search for waymarks the same place/object will be listed over and over and over again. Makes it hard to sort through. The ability to run a PQ for an area which would display a waymark once indicating the different categories it fits or a PQ that would allow me to select the categories I am interested in just might entice me into trying it again.
  23. My understanding is that the SD card for whatever maps will work on the one GPS is was bought for. Did you register it or unlock the maps on it? If I am correct it is registered to the serial number of the GPS in one way or another, either when it is first used in the GPS or on line to "unlock" the maps.
  24. In the top right corner of geocaching.com pages is a small rectangle which says "Hi,..." with your caching name and number of caches found. It will also state "Premium Member". When you get close to your renewal date (I think it's 30 days) it will say something to the effect of "Your Premium Membership Expires on XXX". That's what reminded me this year.
  25. Garmin just released it's new updated version of the eTrex series. ETrex 10, 20, and 30. All support paperless caching, the 10 is $120, 20 - $200. Also the Magellan GC series is good, even its lowest end model has a color display while the eTrex 10 is monochrome.
