  1. Just tried it...clicked open, got a window that had the 2 files that I could copy to the GPS...appears to have worked! Thank you! There are some aspects of this that are not quite as clear as others....this was one of them! Not sure why things were not working yesterday at all, but today, worked out perfect! Thanks again!
  2. I have done a couple PQs that were 500, I receive an email with a zip file, and I am able to open up the zip for 2 files that I put into the Garmin/gpx. I have generated a 1000 cache PQ that the site says I can load from the site (no email with zip file will be sent). There are NO instructions on how to load this thing up from the site....I am not able to get zip files, or anything else that looks like I can grab it and load my garmin. Anyone familiar with what I need to do to help out? I am running PC, Windows 7 and IE (what ever version came with the computer...) Thanks for your help!
  3. I started looking....knew I did not want the monochrome screen and wanted the flexibility of adding a chip. Started by looking at the Etrex 20 and 30, and the Dakota 20 (I think). Was told by a buddy not to bother with the Dakota...., looked at the Oregon 450.... the price between them isn't as great as some would believe....I actually got the Oregon 450T on Amazon for 240$.... and I had been looking at the Etrex 30 for 180ish....and Dakota for 210 or so.... check prices.... find your deal. I would personally recommend color screen and ability to add SD cards.... just my $0.02.
  4. I seldom post, therefore, I must lurk. I signed up for geocaching back in 2004, seemed like a good idea at the time, BUT I was in Germany, didn't have a GPS or a good understanding of how they work...so did nothing with it until this year. Now have a couple good GPS units and having a blast with it! Have 54 finds, a couple DNF, and have 1 cache placed, another pending review, and a 3rd potential site awaiting permission from corporate office giving me permission to place a cache on their property. I do not read all topics, in fact, most the time, I am looking for specific information. Once in awhile, there is a topic that just "sounds interesting" and will look at it. I have tried to post a bit of my own perspective on a couple posts, information as such...or my experience. If it helps someone, great, if not...oh well! I am disappointed that there is not an automatic link to the discussion forums from the main geocaching page (that keeps you logged in without having to log in a second time). can't do anything except lurk at work because of that....(govt computer won't allow login to the forums.). Happy Caching!
  5. I am wondering why I have to log into each section separately... I would think that if you go to the www.geocaching.com website and log in, you should be able to click on shopping and have your shopping account pop up...same with the Discussion Forums. I only mention this, because at times, while at work, I would like to check things out. I can log into my geocaching page (check my cache, trackables, check out the maps, etc). When I go to the discussion forums, I am NOT able to log in (my work computer does not allow it). When I go to shopping, I also have to re-log. I would think that there may be less work involved by linking them to a central account so logging in to participate in discussions is not required...you are already logged in. Also, the only way to go from the shopping section back to the main geocaching page is to retype the site in the browswer bar OR hit the back button as many times as it takes to move you back to it....I like the link from the discussion board back. (this may be related to the fact that I do NOT have the "keep me logged in" box checked at work, but if I recall right, even at home all sections of the account are separate log ins....). Thank you for your consideration on this! Chris
  6. I have looked at a number of members that have added challenges and maps to their statistics page...such as coloring in the counties within their state that they have found caches, finding specific levels of caches (for all types) 1 star/1 star, through 5 star/5 star...where are these at and how do I add them? or find others that I would like to track for myself??!!
  7. One thing I have found is that one persons small is another persons regular or micro....There isn't even a category for Nano (except for Micro and they tell you in the description that it is a Nano... the differences between small and micro seem to be the largest in 'opinion'...while there are suggestions, they do not always run true. Found a 35mm film bottle today listed as a small....found another 35mm film bottle at another site by another cache owner listed as micro. Good luck!! ;-)
  8. Thanks guys for the input! I was kinda afraid of that kind of answer....I actually paid for the FCC license for the legal use of the higher wattage use frequencies. I also would be curious if park service et. al. monitors these frequencies at all...doubt it....I guess I will just make it a practice of 1. Letting someone know approximately where I will be going (nothing new there!) and 2. letting them know that I have that type of radio, so if there is a problem, SAR and others can be alerted to it and maybe have equipment to scan for it. I will use my Oregon 450 for geocaching and my Rhino 520 for hunting and going into the back country!
  9. I have the Rhino 520 (also the 110). Am curious about the radio. I paid the $85 for the FCC license to use the upper end radio frequencies for greater range, so can use everything. Am wondering if the radio frequencies are compatible with anything other than Rhino Radios?? Of greatest interest, would it be scan-able for law enforcement? Search and Rescue? Others?? If I am out in the back country and have problems, will it actually help me with communication even if the other end does not have the Rhino and tuned to the same frequency?? Thanks for the input!
  10. I have the Rhino 520. Love it! GREAT accuracy. Radio is fun, but requires that someone else have one also (to use it). Only other thing I am not sure on, is if the radio frequencies can be picked up by any other radios that are NOT the Rhino (such as Search and Rescue, Law Enforcement,etc)...have never heard 1 way or the other. I am also not amused that with the money I spent for it, I had to spend another $85 for the FCC license to use the high power/long range frequencies. The rechargeable lithium battery that comes with it goes for about 16 hours continuous use. I got a back up battery unit that holds AA batteries for back up. Good luck in your decision!
  11. So, I am also rather new to this game, but not completely for gps.... the Rhino is cool. Problem....unless you know others with it, the radio feature is not all that great (unless you buy a second one). The GPS part functions very well... I have the 520 and it is NOT paperless, not sure on the 655. I now also have the 450T. Love it (but have only been out once with it for geocaching). Still trying to get used to it, but seems to work very well. I would suggest you get the best one that you can afford...now with that being said, that is not always the most expensive.... I do not need the camera that some of them have built in. Didn't get one with the camera. saved about 200$ on that option! Have heard (second hand) that eTrex isn't all that great. Oregon and Montana are pretty good...Cost: I went with the Oregon. you will have to look at options and weigh against cost. Otherwise, all are good units!
  12. You are missing waypoints associated with the caches. These can be parking, trailheads or other nice to know locations. Sometimes they can even be steps of a multi-cache although this is not as common as the others. The file is much smaller than the cache file, so there is really no reason to not install it. So, maybe helpful in some situations, but not a requirement. I am cool with that!! Thanks! that was bugging me, but not enuf to ask the question until other questions/answers triggered it!
  13. just a curious piggyback question....I am doing the PQ thing also, open the zip, see both files, but I have only copied 1 of them into the GPS....(must be the waypoint version that I am not moving). seems to work well for me so far, but curious as to what I may be missing??!!I thought the second file was for a different format (depending on age of GPS unit...).
  14. Thank you! It appears that it may have worked! I went out and "found" my own cache, logged it, came in and followed instructions. It logged it as a find! I then went in and deleted the post...think it is a bit tacky to "find" my own, but a great way to test a system!
  15. I just upgraded from a non-paperless GPS to a Paperless GPS (the Oregon 450t). I see where I can do all sorts of quaries and move them (have done so with success...) NOW the question... HOW do I move the "found" from GPS to the site?! Hook GPS up to computer...check. Now what??!! Thanks for the help!
