  1. I really highly doubt that the owner of timber woods will do anything with that cache. He hasn't logged in since Tuesday, September 25, 2007. over a year ago. I hope I wasn't out of line, but I submitted a needs archive. Even if it was replaced, which isn't going to happen, it would get muggled again anyway. Regardless, I am going to hid a cache in that area. It will be off trail and even if a muggler stumbled across it they would think nothing of it. I am going to place it after I finish this multi I am putting together.
  2. truck load of ammo cans and a new fully loaded GPSr.
  3. retail adventure should have been an easy find. every one found it easy. It was muggled once before so its prolly gone. I just think that every one should be logging so that the owners can maintain them. no one will ever know there is a problem if no one says they couldn't find it. As for the timberwoods, who ever hid it there was not a good cache hider. its a popular place for kids to ride ATV's and if it was hidden under a ramp, what happens when they pull up the ramp? It could have been a good hide if it was off trail, and not on an atv track. I would imagine whoever upkeeps the ramp prolly found it a couple of times and tossed it into the brush as it has ended up there a few times. I'd actually like to take this cache over and move it to a better place, or rather put a new cache there in a better spot, because there is a nice trail there.
  4. timberwoods and retail adventure. I couldn't find stumped, But I know its there. I am going to try again eventually. Retail experience was a mag key box, under a bench, and I checked every bench there. Had a lot of people staring at me. After my 2nd attempt I wasn't worried about mugglers on this one. I spent an hour looking for timberwoods, and it was supposed to be hid where a lot of kids ride ATV's. according to the logs and the clue, it seemed like it was supposed to be under a ramp. the ramp was gone, and there was an imprint in the dirt shaped like a tuperware container which would have been under the ramps. I looked everywhere any way. Bushwhacked a lot. checked all the trees, and i wasn't alone looking. i cannot remember the other one but some of these haven't been check for at least 3 months http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...8b-6157062b39c6 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...d5-3256739e99cc
  5. I was hunting for caches the other day, and a 2 or them I could not find. According to the cache page, I looked where they were. they should have been easy finds. I have noticed this with one other cache as well. The other thing was that it has been months since some one has found them, but others in the area have been found. As well all previous finds find them easy. It seems to me that people are prolly looking for these, but just not going on the page and logging a not found. This is annoying because how will any one know that there is something wrong with the cache? Any one else notice this sort of thing?
  6. I have been looking through this thread. The one thing that I see a lot of is people against using fake electrical boxes as caches. I don't think there is anything wrong with this at all. First off, I wouldn't go into any box that looked live my self. And in most cases, the boxes, once you look at them, don't make any sense where they are. Then there are usually clues on the cache page that gives it away. I have a square D box I am using, and I am not going to make it look like its live, but to the passer by it will not stand out, but it will to a geocacher. Then there is always this. If you opened a box that was not a cache by chance, You would know it. AND, electrical boxes are designed not to kill ppl. every fuse, and breaker box I have looking in has never contained anything exposed that would zap some one easily. As for fake outlets.... Well if its a blank, and it wasn't a cache, there are most likely wirenutted leads, either that or nothing. Not to mention, most cache boxes like that are designed to open with out a screwdriver. Like a magnet ect. Then there are the ones with combo locks on them, where in you need to retrieve the code via multi cache.
  7. I just thought it would be nice to have an icon indicator for the type of container out of a small list of popular containers. Ammo can, Tupperware, film canister, not specified ect. It would be cool if it told you one the map search ect. I know it says the size, but it would be cool to have an icon showing.
  8. I spray after I print. I Had the can of dull coat. I can spray any paper I want, and it uses very little spray to coat. As for long term.. I am working on 4 days submerged, and the piece of paper does not even look wet in the water. I have taken out 2 times only to write on it to make sure it writes and it does not loose the ink. So far it still writes, and it has not lost ink. I have also tugged on it. It is strong, still not as strong as dry, but it really is a amazing how the paper holds up after sprayed. will take some pictures and maybe even a video just so every one can see how well this works. As I have stated. I have tried other sprays including regular polyurethane and a flat clear poly as well. they did not have the same effect. They made the paper brittle. As well it didn't seem write as well. It just seems like specifically Testors dull coat seems to work the best. you can buy a whole ream of paper for $5 at walmart. There are 500 sheets. If you were to buy 500 sheets at .13 a sheet you would spend $65.00. One can of spray is $4 and it will prolly do half a reem of paper. That is a substantial difference in cost.
  9. Hi, I am new to geocaching but I love it. I have come across a few logs that were soaked and falling appart. I know they sell the rite in rain logs and such, but I don't always have the money myself to spend on the good stuff to make a cache. This got me thinking of ways to try to waterproof paper while still being writable. After trying a few things I have found something that seems to do the trick. Testors Dull coat. Out of the clear sprays I have tried, this stuff seems to make the paper stand up in water, and you can still write on it when its wet. Also, it still acts and feels pretty much like paper. It gets slightly more rigid, buy not by much. If does not become brittle either. Regular clear poly made it brittle and didn't write very well dry let alone wet. I am guessing that the dull surface that the dull coat creates is rough enough to make the ball on a pen spin, even when wet. The difference between paper that has been sprayed and that has not is very clear. I used regular printer paper. Un treated paper soaks up the water instantly, and gets mushy and easily falls apart. The stuff I treated with the dull coat has been in a ziplock bag for 3 days and still is a single sheet of paper. Also, when submerged it does not look wet either as were the untreated gets soaked and you can see through it. This stuff works great!! I sprayed the dull coat liberally on the paper so that the paper would absorb the dull coat. I am going to test it out some more.
  10. I am a new cacher. I live in the morris co area of NJ. I'm just trying to find people to go caching with. If your in the area let me know. I can never find any one willing to go, and although I go by my self, Its always more fun with other ppl.
  11. Well that settles that... I am now a premium member! YaY! Wish premium membership came with instant cache publishing, takes forever....
  12. I have been considering upgrading to premium, but i am not sure. Are the services when you upgrade worth it?
  13. Would micro-swag keep them from being placed in boring, repetitive, obvious locations - to a degree far greater than larger caches? I'm thinking... no. I'm not a "micro hater". As a matter of fact, I happen to own the oldest existing micro in North America. I'm just "micro burned-out". There's only so many times you can drive towards a cache location, only to see a parking lot full of lamp posts, and not shake your head in disgust at some people total lack of imagination. Bah, I just hid a micro in a parking lot at a lamp post yesturday LoL BUT, It won't be so completely easy to find. Its not under the base cover as so many are. Its only my 3rd cache placed. I was more testing a way to hide it then anything. The plus to this hide is that its the only one within several miles. I wanted to put it some where else, but there were no idea locations for it. As far as hating micro's. I think finding them is the thing that gets me. I could care less about swag. I leave items, but I never take anything unless its trackable.

  15. I'm working on waiting a week now. This is aggravating me. If they are a reviewer, volunteer or not, they should be non bias, and review the cache no matter what is said. That's why they are a reviewer. I am a new cacher, this is really a nice impression to give people that they have to wait over a week for a cache to get posted. Who do I have to talk too to complain?
  16. Lots of things can effect a reading. Trees, their leaves can bounce signals. Buildings can do the same. Clouds can also have a minimal effect on gps. You may also take into consideration, the GPS unit. Software on it, and how powerful of a receiver and antenna it has. I am sure if you had a first generation Military unit, It would probably work much better and have complicated algorithms to counter these types of interferences. I came to some simple conclusions when I would get some spearatic readings out of no where, and notice the wind was blowing pretty hard and I was near trees.
  17. YES YOU CAN!!! You can Use MioPocket. It is originally designed to work with Mio GPS units, but it has also been tested to work on Magellan maestro. If You don't have maestro I am not sure. If you do have the maestro, I actually have a copy set up for it I could send you. All you would have to do is put what I send you on an SD card. turn on the unit. Pop in the SD and the MioPocket software will isntall automatically. And if you want your unit back the way it was, just do a hard reset. after you take the card out. It will basically turn you unit into a PDA. Full desktop and applications. It also comes with GPS software called BeeLine GPS which is what I use on my Mio Moov. It has built in software just for geocaching. I will know 100% if its set up right for magellan because my friend has the maestro and we are going to test it out. I love the software. Its a must have, and in my opinion, it makes the unit better for geocaching except for it not being waterproof and built to be rugged. Its functionality is what I am talking about. I am able to download a LOC file with all the caches I want to find and it will tell me when I am within 1000 feet of any of them. So I can drive around and wait for the DING, and then park the truck, and use the same unit to find the cache. No need for another unit. Love it.
