Guess I'm one of those Luddites who eschews mice in favor of the keyboard as well!  Hubby is always frustrated when trying to use my laptop because I have no mouse.  :D

  2. Look for events in your area, and GO!  Meet some local geocachers, and then you can team up to go find caches.  Local cachers can give you tips and hints on your local caches, maybe give you rides to  some good hiking spots, and other events in the area.  Looks like there are several near those you have already found that you can get to with a bicycle too.  Have fun!

Is signing the log absolutely a requirement? My wife and I like to hunt for caches but are not interested in signing the logs. Are there any rules covering this?

You can log caches online as "Found" after you visited the coordinates and signed the logbook.

You say are not interested in signing the logs, but are you interested in logging the caches as Finds, and posting your logs online?  If so, then yes, you need to sign the logsheets/logbooks.  If you are simply interested in the hunt, and finding them for your own satisfaction, and you are not logging them as Found It on the website or in the app, then you don't need to sign the logsheet.

Now I want to be a bit more adventurous and create a Geocache that I can use a checker with that allows for a keyword - the name of a particular song - which would give the message I have created and which also includes the final coordinates.  I am having a few problems with this and have come to the forums to see if I can get some advise. Thanks.

Welcome!  Perhaps post your question as a separate topic in this How Do I? forum section?  Look at Certitudes.org - you can use a keyword or coordinates and, correctly entered, will give you final coordinates, hints, or lead you to another stage if this is a multi.

I received  a message from a geocacher asking me to supply the numbers found in questions of all stages of one AL. I said he lost his paper with the answers and would like me to provide him the numbers I figured out

Yeah, this sounds a bit fishy to me as well.  "Lost his paper with the answers" - don't you enter the answers as you do the AL?  Maybe he /she wrote them down to work on the bonus later?  Did YOU write them down to be able to provide them to someone else later on?   I know I don't if I can enter answers right then and there.  If there are calculations to make I'll write them in a notebook or scrap paper, but then I rarely keep those after I've logged the bonus...  What AL are we talking about?  (Just curious)

  6. We saw the same message pop up when we relocated a cache about 80 feet; the message seemed weird, but even if a reviewer was notified, they would see the cache was only moved a short distance and the new coordinates DID match the state listed.  We submitted the changed coordinates and all is well - basically we ignored the message.  Still, it was unsettling to have it pop up when it clearly did not apply.

  7. Maybe I'm misunderstanding your suggestion, but when I open the search map on geocaching.com (the Browse map, my preferred map and the map that comes up when I click the link in your post) I can choose any one of several maps, and most of those DO contain topo views with peak names, and roadways.  The default geocaching map does not, but most of the others available by hovering over the "layers" icon in the top right corner do contain what you are looking for.

Is this not what you see?  Or what you want?

I have never found myself in such a situation because I don't search for challenge caches that I don't already qualify for.

Early in my geocaching "career" I attended at CITO event along a biking path with a "power trail" of challenge caches.  Being relatively new to geocaching, and walking the bikeway picking up trash with 2 more expereinced cachers who had already signed and qualified for many of the challenges, they encouraged me to find and sign all the logs.  I was hesitant, as I thought I'd NEVER qualify for most of them, so why sign them?  Still, I followed their advice, and enjoyed finding all the caches and signing the logsheets as we walked along.

Fast forward to today, nearly 6 years later, and I've been able to claim finds on 13 of the 31 signed logs (when I remember to go back and check with Project-GC I usually find 1 or 2 that I can now claim, or I am very close to being able to claim) .  I logged a "Write Note" on the date I signed them all.  I log a find on the date I figure out I qualified, but note that I signed the log on 4/21/18; the trail is well maintained but occasionally one will go missing, so I make it clear that I actually found it and signed it a few years ago.

That was my introduction to challenge caches - so if there are challenges in an area we are visiting, whether we qualify or not, we sign them if we can find them.  If we qualify, great, it's logged as a Find that day.  If we don't qualify, we'll do a Write Note to that effect, and then log it at some later time when you do qualify.  Whether the cache gets archived in the meantime doesn't factor in, unless it gets locked and you are not able to create a new log, or change your WN to a Find. (But that's another topic that's been discussed already - whether to write a new log on the date of qualification, or change your old WN to a Find log.)

  9. You might try viewing your souvenirs - I get the blue dot notification when I have a new souvenir, and it goes away once I have looked at my souvenirs.

    Go to Profile, then Souvenirs.

It's a blue dot on my Profile icon; I get a yellow dot on the Messages icon if I have a new message to look at.

A group of four cachers visited several caches. They have a “team stamp” without any of their names on it, just initials of their  unregistered team name.

    Ok or not?

Quite often, when caching with a group of 3, 4 or more, we will come up with a "team name" and use that to save space on logsheets.   I make a note in my log that we signed as "team name" and then list the other cachers who were in the group.  Some groups often go together and have ahd a team stamp created - it saves time.  And in my neck of the woods (Bay Area, San Francisco, California) it's quite common.

Well okay, was just hoping there was a setting in the app when I need down-to-the-foot granularity

No, there's no setting in the app - If I need more precision I use my Etrex 30x; it gives distance as .11, .12 miles, etc which I can approximate if I need to.  I like seeing my progress towards GZ in hundredths of miles as well, rather than the tenths - it seems to go faster that way!!

I can't advocate enough for posting a find time and a counter on each log. I didn't consistently add the counter up until I found >1000 caches, but writing down the time has been a thing for me since the beginning. So much so that I get really annoyed (for no reason) when people don't write down their exact time of FTF in their logs :D

We (hubby RattleSnack and I) have been numbering and time-stamping our finds since about #200 or so (now approaching 3000 finds).  I really don't pay attention to the order they show online, but for my own records and review, I enjoy going back to see the #'s and time of day of the finds.  It will often trigger a memory when someone asks a question about once of our finds.  Andif I ever need to see/remember the order we found things, the time stamps are helpful.

I've had one of these circulating for over a decade. I feel fortunate that the last log I got on it was a DISCOVER in a California cache on 10/31/23.

Sometimes I wish I'd kept this, but it WAS a promotional TB, so I was obligated to release it.

490 logs and over 33,000 miles traveled later, maybe I'll put a mission on it to make its way home......

I hope you are able to bring it home! That would be a cool item to have!

Through a series of "fortunate" events, I  will be able to return this to its owner very soon - and it is in absolutely pristine condition - amazing!!

Photo attached, and yes, it IS the same TB released by TeamRabbit Run....awesome story of how it came into my hand!

This issue is now fixed. Thank you to all for your patience.

It does, indeed, seem to be fixed - THANK YOU!  I was doing some trackable catch up work today, and I thought I saw the error, the GC0 link, come up, but I can't seem to recreate what I did to make that happen.  That's a good thing, though - it means my normal "workflow" is working again!  If I do see it, I will report back what I did to make it appear again.

When you promise that that you're not extensively using the visit feature ^_^ I will tell you that it is possible. But the TB must currently be placed in a cache otherwise you have to communicate with the current holder that he/she has to support you with grabbing the TB back when you have finished your retroactively logging.

I promise I will not (do not) extensively use the Visit feature!  On our recent journey from N. California to  Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, we found a few caches on our drive (with me logging drafts) to the cruise terminal, then I dropped several and only now, after returning home, realized I couldn't log a visit by those trackables to a couple of the caches we found on the way down.  So the only way is to grab them, do the visits (only 2 caches), then drop them back in the cache where I left them....and delete my grab and re-drop....got it.

Two have already been picked up and moved on, and I will leave those alone - they did get the miles from home to Cabo.

Thank you, Hynz - it worked well.  And yes, I did add a picture and text to one of the two visit logs I added to each of the 4 TB's I edited.  https://coord.info/TB36H1X is one, I was able to add logs for 2/18/2024 before the Drop in Cabo San Lucas.

  16. I just returned from a cruise to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.  I dropped several TB's in a cache there, one has since been picked up by another cacher.  I still have all the tracking codes written down.

My usual modus operandi is to log drafts for the caches found, then complete those drafts on my computer later - but I do log travel bug activity right away so the inventory in caches is accurate when someone else finds it before I can properly log it.  I'm now home, and catching up on logs from the trip.  Is there a way to go back now and "Visit" those travel bugs I dropped off at caches we found on our way TO the cruise, to document the bugs travels?  I thought I had done this previously but I can't seem to figure it out now.

If I can't do that, no big deal, they have the mileage from home to Cabo, but I would like to show a couple of visits to caches along the way.  Was this possible before or am I misremembering?

No problem, because the code lets you post your log only the date you found the cache, regardless when you finally decide to post it.

There is no time-out for the code, because it is always valid only the date you saw it. Let's call this an additional security feature of the token.

    Yeah.... no.

Not so much a security feature as a sufficiently annoying requirement that would become a game-killer.

    Won't happen.

OK, all this talk of codes and tokens just screams ALR! ALR! to me so I don't see it happening either.  And I don't see a need for it.  I've only been geocaching since 2017, but the simplicity of finding a cache, signing the physcial log (or sending answers for ECs and Virtuals) then logging a "Found it!" online and sharing the story of the find seems to work just fine.  Yes, there are "cheaters", and unmaintained caches, but that has always been part of the game.  Adding more to being able to log a find doesn't seem (to me) to be the way to improve the game.

I bought some new trackables and activated them. They are now "in the hands of the owner".

But what actions must I take to place it in a cache I own to get its journey started?

You can "Visit" the trackable to the cache - Open the cache page, then use the Write Note log type to create a log.  Write your note - Trackable visit, or Visting trackables to start their journey or whatever, then select from the trackable inventory below the log creation part of the page.  Visit the ones you  want to visit, and their journey has begun!

So now I guess I'm the first to complete the challenge, although not the first name in the log, and that's essentially what I wrote online. I think I'll just leave it at that.

You are the first to log a FIND on the cache page - and if you want Project-GC to tally it as a First to Find, just add the FTF in brackets or parentheses and claim it.  Don't overthink it, you got it!!

  20. As others have stated, and I agree, your enthusisam is great, and asking questions before placing different types of caches is wise!  Many of the questions you are asking will be answered as you FIND MORE CACHES, of all the various types to discover how they are done, and which type(s) you like and would like to place and maintain.

As a basic member, on your phone, all you can see are traditionals and events-other cache types, puzzles, multis, challenges, and higher difficulty and terrain caches, can be seen on the website on your computer (or even in a browser on your phone, but it's way too hard for me, at least, to use the website on the phone.  I much prefer my laptop when using the website). Anyway, I would suggest looking up nearby events to meet other geocachers in your area, and asking many of your questions there.  They can be a great resource for you as you learn all the ins and outs of geocaching finding and hiding.  Additionally, meeting the locals will help you to know what works in your neck of the woods, and what doesn't.Types of caches, what's acceptable and what's not does vary around the world, so knowing the local playing field is helpful.

There are many videos and guides out, by geocaching.com and other people who have lots of experience and can provide you with many ideas and tips on doing this thing called geocaching.  The best way to learn is by getting out there, attending events, meeting and talking with others, and FINDING caches of all types!  Get out there and have fun!

This way to adjust find dates freely is spreading also to other cache types

Ahhh, but that's really not what I am doing, I'm just claiming the find when I fulfill the challenge.  And we DO date the logsheet on regular caches when we sign it (if there's room) and claim it on the day we find it.  Others may play it differently, and apparently in Finland it's common practice to adjust dates.  All this is getting a bit off-topic though, and I'm done defending the way I play challenges.
