  1. I guess this one's out, then: Not the best idea for a cache, but how about for a TB?

    Bomb Scare

Well, they at least would have used the correct DOT placards during transport to the site : Remember the movie Die Hard? They made an ambulance into a bomb ! Oh no, one just drove by. We had better have the sherrif investigate that. If you stop and think about it, what about mail boxes? You know the uni-bomber did his work that way. Then there was guy on the plane with the exploding shoes. YIKES! I am wearing shoes! Is that a fuse or just my shoestring? HELP POLICE! I guess imagination is the limit (and hence the problem).

    Bomb Scare

OK, let’s think about this for a minute before jumping to conclusions. The cache was placed by the Middletown Convention and Visitor’s Bureau with authorization (permission) from the historical society. The cache was clearly labeled. What more could you ask these guys to do? In my estimation, this cache was placed in accordance with the gc guidelines! A nicer label would have been nice, but it was clearly labeled. This is a classic example of over-reaction by local police at face value (at least that is what I gather from reading the article). What about the two recent scares in Indiana? Both of those were cemetery caches and one of the containers was a waterproof match safe? Why would anyone want to blow up a cemetery? Since when are bombs placed in match safes? This was silly! Fortunately the police were more reasonable there and even had staff that were involved in geocaching. Look at what is going on outside of geocaching: “Authorities found nothing hazardous on board a flight from Atlanta to New York that was diverted to Charlotte after a flight attendant found a bottle of water and then smelled something suspicious, airport officials said.” People are paranoid! Pretty soon the bomb squad is going to be called to go pick up litter in our parks because a coke can lying on the ground might be a bomb! This is silly but happens all the time and even outside of the geocaching world. There will always be over-suspicious people who think they are being stalked by terrorists. Geocaching is not bad. We are not doing anything wrong, illegal or immoral. I feel bad about police wasting their time, money and effort but it happens in every aspect of our lives, not just geocahcing. I agree that spending some time educating the law enforcement community will be time well spent, but I will not back off what I enjoy doing out of fear of getting a call from the local bomb squad. "...take this game back to the woods"? Yeah, I enjoy that aspect of geocaching the best too, but speaking to the bigger picture of crawling in a hole becuase people are parinoid, NO WAY!
  6. I don't know that I would send out a replacement. I saw one that re-appeared after being "missing" for over 2 years.
  7. Sandy was a riot! I was especially fond of her geojeep and Elvis TBs. She was always working on something creative in that area and was somewhat of a fixture at the picnics. We shall miss her.
  8. AMEN! On the serious side there was another geocache incident (bomb scare) in a neighboring county recently. While that one did make the paper, we were fortunate that there were emergency management personnel who themselves were geocachers that quickly recognized the situation and avoided making this a big (and expensive) production.
  9. I delete them all the time. Most of my hides are in cemeteries and some folks just can't follow the rules on the cache page . "Logs indicating night caching will be deleted without notice" typically in BIG, BOLD, RED letters! Believe it or not, I have had logs mentioning using flashlights, 2:00am finds, police harassing them at the cache site at night, etc. The good news is that it typically does not happen again with the same cacher . Other than that, I have not had to delete many.
  10. Things appear to be getting a little out of hand in this area lately. While the focus of my professional life is in the environmental field , I do just enough work with "homeland security issues" to be familar with the landscape. Geocaches in cemeteries is not exactly what law enforcement officials would be looking for right now, so why all the parinoia? Pretty soon you poor guys are going to be called out for empty coke cans that someone thinks is a bomb. It is sad to see so many problems lately.
  11. I don't care too much for NASCAR but love open wheel. This virtual cache should cover IndyCar, F1 and NASCAR: Louie's Motto
  12. This is the only South Carolina coin I know of: Am I missing something? That is the one. It is there, you just have to look hard. It might be helpful to re-visit the thread from when those were being designed. Its inclusion was very deliberate. I also forgot about Eye of the Pirate poker chips. At least one of those has a really cool skull. Poppagoth has a really cool coin too. Too bad he only cast 6 of them:
  13. This thread beats the heck of of anything on television tonight
  14. Let's not forget South Carolina
  15. As bookmarks are not searchable (yet), I thought it would be useful if we could start a list of the ones that apply to the midwest here. I was thinking more or less topical, series, routes (as opposed to my favorites, my FTFs, etc). 16. ... BTW: Since #500 was related to decendants of the Mayflower, I thought I would throw out that there is a LIVING Mayflower decendant on one of the ISQ hiding teams. Ooooh! ... What did you do with the dead ones? Why do you think I got started geocaching?
  17. Great idea, but keep in mind that bookmarks are typically limited to some geographical area (by country or state) while others are universal. Would this be a topic for for this forum or one of the regional forums???? Hmmm...
  18. AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH! I was up in Ft. Wayne on Thursday and did take out some time to some geocaching. Too bad a had run my PQ the night before or I would have noticed #500. Congratulations to BGF and CHE K on their landmark finds! BTW: Since #500 was related to decendants of the Mayflower, I thought I would throw out that there is a LIVING Mayflower decendant on one of the ISQ hiding teams. Ooooh!
  19. BUMP! I would love to have an answer to this question. If not, are there any plans to make the public bookmarks searchable? I would have figured being able to search the bookmarks was a given, but I sure have not figured out how to do so. So, if I want too see what bookmarks exist, the only thing I can do randomly click on profiles and see if they have any bookmarks?
  20. Nah, we just like to hear ourselves talk more than others (I must have meant type). Am going to try to visit Shelter III over lunch tomorrow.
  21. I will not be there as I am just a beginner in the running world. I did, however, hold something similar just before a half-marathon of 35,000. Attendance was sparce, but ample lead time helps in situations like this. Further, I have had lots of comments from others who ran the race indicating they want to attend next year. Looks like I will have to do it again next year. The "MINI" Event My advice it to just do it! You have plenty of time between now and November.
