  1. I think this is something to consider... and I agree with Welch-- events in general can be a dangerous place for a TB, at least from my personal experience. I released 4 TBs in April, a N, S, E, W. Their goals were to go North, South, East, and West (respectively) until next summer, then turn around and come home to my first cache... 2 are already MIA... both lost at event caches. Whose fault is it? You really cannot point fingers / blame. In one case, the guy who picked up the bug at its original cache simply lost it before taking it to the event cache. Would this be the fault of the event cache? You cannot say it is… but you can allows say that if he would have put in a cache instead, it may have gotten there instead of sticking around this cacher’s place and subsequently getting lost. The other one went to the cache and never left… maybe it got taken out with the garbage, but no one knows. I emailed all cachers involved, several remember seeing it, but do not know who took it. I am waiting to hear back from one person, but it has been about six weeks since he logged in… so my chances are nil of getting any hopeful response… So what am I concluding in this rambling? I honestly do not know… except TBs have a limited life regardless… I guess my conclusion is this: will I release any more TBs? Probably not... for me, they are just not worth the hassle... Will I move TBs from place to place? sure.... Will I maliciously lose TBs? You never know... (kidding )
  2. Talk about rejuvenating an old thread! :-) 12/31/01 to 9/15/05... :-)
  3. I completely agree! What a great time! Thanks for the fun!
  4. That is a great one -- i have done it about four times now with various people introducing them to geocaching.
  5. I have a bookmarked list of offroading caches in the greater Western PA area: CW Iams's List of Offrading Caches Enjoy! Feel free to yet me know of any i have missed -- I have complied this list from discussions on the Tri-go yahoo group message board.
  6. Around here the townships / counties will put together a plat book (sp?) even few years. These plat books are basiclly low detail road maps that have property lines broken down on them and the owners name from the land's deed. I am not sure if this is a local thing around me or if other areas do it as well.
  7. How far from Pittsburgh are you looking? There are a lot of great caches in the Ohioplye area...
  8. Is that becuase it is hard to do indoors? Just kidding-- I enjoy anything outdoors-- offroading in my Wrangler, hiking, rock climbing, biking, etc-- you name it and if it is out side and involves playing / getting dirty, I am there. Thus geocaching is great because it can introduce me to new areas to play. I also really enjoy caching while vacationing because it will often introduction you to areas you normally would not see.
  9. I must just have Jeeps on the brain...
  10. No, I'm pretty sure it was when TBs were created. People can return to caches to retrieve a travel bugs. I'm not sure what 'other side' there could be. (Other than people trying to force their own idea of the rules on people) I am not sure about your area, but around here, I rarely see logs referencing specific trips to a previously found cache for a random travel bug. But with the YJTBs last year and the WJTBs this year, I am seeing these postings. Now I am not declaring there is something wrong with the Jeep contest- I love jeeps-- and i like the contest-- just look at my forum title and aviator. As for sides, I do not see the need for visiting a previously found cache just to grab a Jeep TB-- I am not forcing any ideas on anybody-- I just do not see the need. Now a stagnant one-- sure-- or if I can fulfill it specific goal-- of course.... but to get an Icon on my stats page-- not what I am here for...
  11. There has been a pretty heated debate over this in the Trigo Yahoo forum here in SWPA- so I have seen numerous sides to this topic. What really started it was people going back to previously logged caches just because a glorious WJTB was spotted there- in some cases they even went to the cache, pulled the bug, got the number, and put it right back in the cache. Some are calling bad form, others not. One of my caches had a new WJTB in it-- I could have easily ran down and grabbed it to get myself the icon on my stats page-- but I am not concerned with my stats. In short, while I would not do that for a WJTB, I would do it to move allong a stale TB or move one that I could fullfill its specific mission.
  12. Hi All- 3 car garage- 2000 Jeep Wrangler (my baby- my first new vehicle) 2001 Volkswagon Jetta (my commuter-- easier on tires / gas than my wrangler) 2002 Jeep Liberty (my wife's grocery getter-- but we are looking to replace this with a Ford Expedition-- need some more room as we have a new baby on the way!) 1 GPSr- Garmin eTrex Legend-- First GPSr and I am very happy with this EDIT- After posting I realized my aviator / forum title probably gives away my vehicle preference...
  13. I am planning a mystery cache and wanted to see what people thought of my idea before I run with it. There is a large lake with two islands. I am thinking about placing a mystery cache as such-- The first cache is a micro probably in the general area of the put in dock. In the micro will be three sets of cords (A, B, and C). The cacher will write down or enter all three coords. They then will decide which one to hit first. I am thinking there will be one waypoint on each island, and the third on the other site of the lake. At two of the points there will be a micro saying “Sorry, not this one.” At the third point there will be a regular cache. The lake is a very popular jet skiing / boating (both motorized and non motorized) / water skiing / fishing spot. Does this sound fun? Or would people prefer a multicache hitting all of the points? Obviously that question’s answers will be based on people’s preferences.
  14. I am sorry to hear about your troubles-- hopefully it all works out and soon!
  15. Fortunately it did not get into the interior- the body of the door on the exterior is about 3 inches lower than the interior part of the car (if that makes any sense )
  16. This is my urban cache mobile (my rural mobile is a Jeep Wrangler )- and lifting it like that was how I saved it from the worst flood our area has seen in over a hundred years last September... The flood waters were 6 feet higher than the 100 year flood plain, and reached about midway up the tire We never dreamed it would get that high, and when it did, the Jetta was trapped in the building, so we lifted it in the air with a forklift and propped it up as so...
  17. I am with you, Eric K: Exactly... The sad thing is, this is not the only thread to feel this effect. Many of them are tending to go in circles, pointing fingers, flaming replies, etc... From my point of view, it appears there are no parties in the wrong. This just happened, as things tend to do...
  18. I agree-- I pulled that from the Link - Top 1000 Geocachers based on Caches Found above Obviously it is not up to date.
  19. Sorry-- I am relatively new-- I had not heard that said before... I was not pointing fingers; I just found it humerous.
  20. Obviously from my counts you can tell I am not a numbers guy-- However, looking at these numbers is pretty intersting: Found- F Hidden- H 651---King Boreas---F- 394---H- 599 Wow-- more hides than finds.... Can you imagine trying to maintain 599 caches? 58---AirRaidFan---F-2570---H- 0 Hmm-- finding 2570 and not having the inkling to hide a few of there own? Just some funny thoughts...
  21. (I sitting next to uperdooper -- it is a good show)
  22. It seems this thread has slightly migrated from my original posted idea / suggestion. I probably was not clear enough. My wife complains about that all the time… I think the necessity for parking cords, or other cords for that matter, to be listed is best determined on a cache-by-cache basis and should be determined by the cache hider. My suggestion was not to make it mandatory to have these coords included in the cache detail; rather, if there are coords, have them download as separate waypoints within gpx files… Does that make sense? Or am I in left field?
  23. Actually I agree. When people do take the time to provide parking coordinates or other information it would be nice to have the coordinates easily available. I'm not so sure this is easy to do though without changing the site a good bit. it may be an issue where the benefit does not outweigh the cost-- I know next to nothing about programing / website design / server capabilities... i just thought it was worth the suggestion.
  24. While that site would work- there is some time involved in running it... I was thinking adding it to part of the gpx download would not add much (if any) time to load...
  25. Oh, cachew nut, where to start.... I am not suggesting it be manditory to post parking coords (or other coords for that matter)... I am suggesting this be an option. Obviously it would not be applicable for lamppost micros or certain mystery caches. In case you did not realize, my lazy reference was a joke. I enjoy few things more than getting outside and playing... I am far from a couch potato or a lazy person. My lazy reference was refering to entering waypoints. I would rather be hiking the trail as opposed to stopping and entering the waypoints for where the trail splits or where a great little view is just of the side of the trail. That's your choice you do not have to use anything. To be honest, you could use loc files or the like and only have the cache waypoints with no description. There would be a challenge. That would be your choice. I really do not see how having this option would cause you a half smilie when you felt entitled to a full smilie. It is your choice if you use the coords or suggestions.... Let me give you a prime example of where this would be a great feature. Here is SW PA, there is a cacher (Quest Master) who has some great caches hidden. This cache is the next one I want to do once I get the axle fixed on my Wrangler (there is some four wheeling areas that I have yet to explore). GC331A - Scattered Remains Other than the final cache, there are 6 other waypoints. Trailhead, turns in the trail, etc. I would rather have those loaded into my GPSr as opposed to entering those in... thats all... pretty simple really... and i would not think it would be a hard feature to add...
