  1. You might check out the previous logs on this cache.

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...cd-d7fc7907f65b

The idea is for people to list their favorites for visitors. I noticed that some of the caches mentioned have since been archived or are inactive so be sure to check.

Lincoln Park, on the near south side has a high density of good caches, for the most part easy walking, lots of caches to find and great scenery.

If you like to hike one of my favorite areas is the Dishman Hills and for longer walks Riverside State park.

I suppose I'm prejudiced but all my caches are great too. Hope you have a good trip!

  2. One more request -

I am parked on a mountain and I know that the cache name includes Mount Bachelor in the name of it. I do not recall the GC number. I could look up the coordinates where I am (after switching the format in my gps unit) but what about a text lookup box for words or title at least?

    I am liking this!

Try using this WAP interface that was mentioned earlier in the thread. It has a few more options and a link to GC.

  3. Also, if you really want to share your pictures why not just post a note and uplead the pic to that? or does that not work with jeeps??

    never thought of that...

    nope, still need the number......

    good idea, though.

Are you sure this doesn't work? Post the note, then go to the Jeep's page and select "view log". In the upper right there should be a link to Upload Image.

  4. First let me say this great! I've had a lot of fun with it since I set it up on my cell. I've used it a couple of times to get the hint when I've forgotten to bring the cache sheet or load the PDA.

From the view cache page it would be great to be able to see nearby caches I have not found. I don't recall seeing that link.

I think this would be a great addition. I can sometimes go through pages and pages without seeing an unfound cache, and I don't have that many finds compared to some.

In any case, thanks again, I've really enjoyed having mobile access.

  5. I'm pretty thin skinned. If someone posted a log like that on my first cache it would have hurt my feelings too, but as others have said, don't delete the log. Most likely he was having a bad day and didn't really mean it the way it sounded to you. When someone posts a DNF on one of my caches I always email them, say I'm sorry they couldn't find my cache and give an additional hint or at least ask if they want one.

When I place a cache and see a DNF I'm disappointed. I place my caches to be found, not to fool people. If your point is to place a challenging hide that's one thing, but in most cases I think the find should be pretty easy. It cuts down a lot on potential damage to the area.

I disagree that an easy cache is doomed. I try to place my caches so that they are somewhat obvious to a person who is actually looking for it, but not evident to casual passersby. It seems to work as I've only had 7 of 160+ caches go missing and some of them were probably to factors other than an accidental find.

    Ditto!

  6. I just setup my email to forward instant notifications to my cell phone and I noticed that if the cache name (or reviewers name) is very long the GC number gets truncated off the text message. Without the GC # using the WAP interface is pretty hard.

Any chance of getting the GC # added to the subject line? I think that would take care of the problem.

My Verizon phone has a 160 char limit and my Cellular one (work) has a 110 char limit.

In any case thanks for the work you've done, it's greatly appreciated.

Edit: I've played with this some more and it doesn't really look like such a big problem, so I'll withdraw my request. Thanks!

  7. I was headed out to a cache one day and as I grabbed my pack from the back seat of the car I looked down and spotted a Magellen on the ground next to the car. I must have missed running over it by inches. My first thought was "SCORE!!!" but I immediatly realized it had to belong to another cacher.

My GPSr is like my buddy that goes with me on all these great trips, it would break my heart to loose it. I was glad I was able to find the owner and get it back to them.

  8. I'm planning on meeting GeekGirl in Cle Elem around 7:30 "ish". I have a Subaru Legacy Wagon with a 2 bike rack. I have room for one more person and another bike in the back. If no one else has a more convenient setup, I'll fit you in. I think it's a good idea to have as many rigs in Cle Elem as possible.

  9. MtnGoat50...since you'll be coming from Spokane, would you like to swing by Cle Elum on the way to Hyak? I can toss my bike on your 2-bike rack & we can head to Hyak together. I'll leave my XTerra & 4-bike rack at Hyak -- that way I can take you (and two others, if rides are needed) back to Hyak afterwards.

If that sounds like a decent plan, we could plan to meet at the published coords (near the Depot Cafe) at 7:30-ish. I think we'll need about 15 minutes to load/unload and 35-40 minutes to get to Hyak.

An alternative would be to meet at Hyak, leave your car there, put your bike on my rack, pick up two other people & their bikes, and head to Hyak with four in my rig. Then I'll need a ride back to Hyak.

I plan on bringing an FRS radio (If I remember! I'm not a morning person). At least I'll only be coming in from Ellensburg...way closer than Spokane! You'll have to leave at some ungodly hour, like 4:30 a.m., right? Ugh!

Sounds good to me. I'm not a morning person either but I seem to manage when I have to.

  10. So which is more like to be accurate. Google Earth or my averages?

IMHO, you should always use the coordinates from the GPS. Virtually everyone hunting the cache will be using a GPS (I suspect a majority will use etrexs) not Google Earth, so the coords from a GPS will always work better. The Calgary example shows that Google Earth or any map program may be very accurate in one location and way off in another.

When I started, I was using an Etrex Legend and I would manually average multiple waypoints. Now I have a LegendC that will automatically average when I take a waypoint. In either case I will try to return a day or two later and check my waypoint against the cache location and if necessary take another average or adjust the waypoint slightly.

I like to have the very best possible waypoints I can get for my caches and I've always received good comments on this from the finders.

  11. I like them, my wife loves them. While I search for the cache she wanders around and reads all the headstones and takes in the local history. It's hard to get her back to the car so we can go to the next cache.

Many of the ones I've done are in small rural cemetaries. They have been place well, with respect for the area. My experience is that cachers treat the area with respect and enjoy learning the rich local history that one can get by visiting an old cemetary.

  12. Please reading the thread before you post next time.

As I have said before in this thread. I'm not suggesting locking down all logs on archived cache pages. Nor am I suggesting not allowing any logs to be made to all archived cache pages that are dated after the pages archive date. I am suggesting that the option be given to the cache owner to block only the found it type log and only those that are dated after the archive date. Cache owners would use this and only after they have 100% verification that the cache was physicaly removed.

I also don't think that fake logs are a great issue. However, that doesn't mean that option wouldn't be widely use and appreciated. Besides I know plenty of features that I initially thought I would never use but after some time found that I couldn't live without.

I'm not telling anyone how to manage their archived caches. If someone wants to allow other people to log finds on their archvied cache listings then that is their prerogative. I would just like a more robust toolset to help us, cache owners, to manage our archived cache listings.

First, I did read the entire thread, I just don't type as fast as you do.

In one of the examples I gave, I believe the cache owner was 100% sure the cache was gone, but it was still there. I think the existing system works well. What you suggest is a bad idea. It gives cache owners who don't want to bother removing their caches the opportunity to suppress legitimate logs ,adds unnecessary complexity and is simply not needed.

  13. I like that it's possible to log archived caches. I've found 3 that I can think of. The most recent one was in my GPSr and showed up as the nearest. I found it with no trouble and only noticed it was archived when I went to log it. It had been reported missing and the owner couldn't find it so he archived it. There was some construction going on nearby, my guess is that a muggle grabbed it and kept it for a while and then put it back.

One time I was searching for a spot to hide a cache. I found a great spot but there was already an ammo can there. I signed the log and made a note of the cache name. When I went to log it, I saw it was archived. It was a 4 stage multi and one or two of the stages had gone missing so the owner archived it but never picked up the final. After my log the owner removed the final and I later used the spot for my hide.

The first archived cache I found was one I noticed had been archived but also had some logs after that. One cacher had even left a TB. This one was right off my usual commute so I stopped and logged it and grabbed the TB to move along.

Anyway, I don't think the problem of fake logs is that great and if the owner knows the cache has been removed and is really not there he can delete them.

  14. I was looking at my owned TBs and coins and noticed that several (most) had been picked up, logged and not moved along.

I would like to send out a VERY POLITE email, asking the offending cachers to please move them along, or , if they've quit caching, offering to pick them up or make other arrangements to get them back into circulation. Does anyone have a sample I could work from?

I realise this may be a lost cause, one of the cachers has never logged a cache, only my TB (not even the cache he got it from?) but it's worth a try.

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I did a search and didn't find anything...

  15. Interesting, I have sometimes noticed the coords I download to be off by .001'. I assumed this was because GSAK stores coordinates in decimal degrees and the GPSr displays them in degrees and decimal minutes. I am assuming that GSAK is displaying the correct information? It appears to be a GSAK issue rather than a hardware issue.

  16. Wow, I'm glad I could cause such a ruckus with this topic

I can see that you, as a relatively new cacher might think this was poor etiquette, but more experienced cachers that have seen many WJTBs go missing with out ever being logged are wondering what your upset about.

I remember, as a new cacher, having my eye on a Jeep that was in a puzzle cache. I was madly trying to solve the puzzle so I could get the jeep, but another cacher that had previously found the cache grabbed it first. I was incensed. How could he do that! That has to be against the "rules"! But after checking the forums, I learned that revisiting a cache to grab a TB or trade something was considered OK. Go figure. I've since used that to my advantage several times.

I have about 30 WJTBs on my watchlist. Most haven't moved in 6 months and most of those are in hands of otherwise reputable cachers that apparently think it's alright to keep them as souvenirs. One guy in my area, who always says in his logs "Will move him along”, has 6. He's never moved one to another cache!

I'm glad you have an interest learning good caching etiquette. I've added the WJTB you found to my watch list and I look forward to seeing it in another cache soon.

  17. Recently I was out looking for a place to hide a cache when I found, what appeared to be, an excellent spot. It was so good there was already an ammo can there. I was surprised because I thought I knew about all the nearby caches. Turns out this was the final of a multi that started across town. When I got to a computer I discovered it had been archived about 6 months earlier and the owner had been inactive for about as long. I emailed the cache owner telling him what I'd found and offering to remove the cache and get it back to him. He never responded to me but did remove the ammo can. If he hadn't removed it, or contacted me, most likely I would have removed it and sent him another email offering to return it.

In another case I noticed an archived cache that had been found a couple of times after it had been archived. Someone had even left a TB in it. I found the cache the next time I was in the area and grabbed the TB to move along (the logic of placing a travelbug in an archived cache escapes me). I told several other cachers about it and they also found it. The cache owner posted a note saying he would try to unarchive it or re-list it but before this could happen, one of the people I'd told about the cache listed it as there own, in the same spot, using the original container. I'm not sure of the etiquette on this but it surprised me.

  18. Without knowing more, if he is running XP service pack 2, I would check the firewall settings they can cause a lot of problems.I'm using GSAK w/XP sp1, as well as a couple of W2k machines, with no problems at all.

    I TAKE THIS BACK.

I just bought a new laptop for my wife. XP pro, service pack 2. I installed GSAK, loaded some waypoints and sent them to my Legend. I had to use a usb to serial device because this PC has no serial ports.

It worked fine with no changes to the firewall.

I think your problem may be with the com settings (com1, com2, etc.) or another program may be using the port. Do you connect you PDA to the same port you do the GPS? If so you may need to shutdown the HotSync manager before you can load the GPS.

    Hope this helps.
