  1. Ok what is Mapsource? How do I drag LOC files to it? How do I transfer them?
  2. Can you elaborate on the mygarmin acct? What am I loading?
  3. Thanks for the bd wishes. This is what I understand...as a premium member I can create a pq which allows me to specify my search criteria, right? then the result of the pq is a gpx file containing the multiple caches? How do I then get that file to my gpsr? Also what are the other benefits of premium membership (other than pq's & supporting the site)?
  4. I just upgraded to a Venture HC, actually a b-day gift. I want to know how to load waypoints. Currently I am NOT a premium member. I have figured out how to load 1 cache at a time. How do I load multiple caches at once? Is the only way to use GSAK or something like it? What is the purpose of the LOC files?
  5. Thanks... Does the blue Legend have a better reciever than the eTrex Camo?
  6. Just wondering if WAAS enabled is the same thing as a high sensitivity receiver I am looking at an eTrex Legend (blue)
  7. I currently have an etrex camo. I am considering the gm jr. the upside is the jr has better reception and can hold tons more waypoints..the downside is no way to enter coords. am I missing anything?
  8. Here is something that might be a great feature once the download is available. instead of having 250,000 caches w/o descriptions and hints... how about 50,000 caches WITH descriptions and hints?
  9. regarding info about caching...aren't all caches supposed to contain a document that explains caching...just in case someone happens to find the cache?
  10. Here is my situation. I currently have an eTrex Camo. the reception is not very good, so I am looking for a new unit. I do not have, nor have I ever seen or used a gps w/ maps. I am on the road alot and would like to do more on the fly caching. As for on the fly caching now, I have created POI's on my Tom Tom. If I see a cache pop up as I'm driving, I do one of two things. 1. if there is not much to figure out, I just look (i.e.-I found one at the base of a road sign b/c it was the only thing in the area. 2. I fire up my laptop, turn on my wireless card, pull up gc.com, search the cache by name, manually enter the coords in my camo and then go find the cache. (does this still count as on the fly) It really seems like the geomate Jr would be a step up in some ways. I apologize if I missed the answer already, but does the Jr have a High Sensitivity Reciever? Regarding RECEPTION ONLY, how does it compare to the Vista HCX, Venture HCX or eTrex H?
  11. Mahini, are you talking about traditional texting or something else?
  12. I am still fairly new and don't do paperless yet. Currently, I go caching w/ 3 devices and a handful of papers. 1. I have a TomTom that I use to get me to the cache...I have used GSAK to create POI's that I loaded into my TomTom. (I love this) 2. I have an eTrex Camo that I use to get me to GZ (I am planning on upgrading to a High Sensitivity gps soon) 3. I have just recently found that I can log my finds using my Blackberry. I have only done this 2x so far, but this is great. I can also look at the cache on the BB. I must say that navigating to the cache on the BB is a bit of a challenge w/o the GC#####, but again I am still new to the doing this on the BB. While this may sound cumbersome, the TomTom is always in my car and the BB is always on my hip; so the only thing extra I am taking is the etrex. Although I think I will start carrying a notebook w/ the caches and their id's listed.
  13. I believe Chrysalides is correct, the others' logs say "view this log"...you have multiple options because you are the OP. the option to edit or upload pics are available to you but only when you are logged in. This is because you always have the ability to edit your own logs...I have gone back months later and uploaded images once I downloaded them from my camera. btw - Others will only see "view log" when they see your log. You will also notice you have the EDIT option on your forum posts too, but you will only see QUOTE or REPLY on the others.
  14. BlueDeuce, thanks so much for the explanation. I think I understand now.
  15. Ok I looked at shaky bacon. I saw no log for North Cedar indicating Blue Duece visited, dropped a TB, nothing. On the log for Caching at the bank, i saw a find for blue duece. tell me if I am correct in what i think happened. Ok here goes: blue duece logged a note at N. Cedar and dropped shaky to start his mileage tracking, then he somehow grabbed it from n cedar. after that he deleted the note on the cache log. Next he logged a find at cachin bank at which time he dropped shaky. then he retrieved shaky somehow. from my own explanation, I am confused how Blue Duece was able to retrieve Shaky from the cache w/o a log. Also where will the "bug show placed/retrieved"? on the TB page? thanks for the help...I really appreciate it.
  16. Newbie here. Tell me if I am correct: I understand dipping to be dropping off a TB in a cache when the visit is logged, then writing a note for the same cache and retrieving the TB that was just dropped. Is that right? Can anyone point me to a cache that has had a TB dipped so I can see the process? What are your thoughts for dipping in the following situtations: 1. A TB that wants to "visit" as many caches as possible. (I say dip in all the caches I visit and drop in the last one that I visit day or week) 2. I have a TB that to drop, but it won't fit the cache (I say dip until I find a cache where it will fit) 3. A TB w/ a specific geographic goal (i.e-Toms River, NJ or Civil War sites) (I say DON'T dip but help get it on its way) Thanks, Jim
  17. Trying to understand...by logging a note in the cache, retrieving it and then deleting the log will this TB's mileage start once I put it in another cache. I guess I am asking what was the effect of deleting the log. Yeah I thought of that too, but there is no tag to use online. Plus I plan to put a grommet in it to attach the tag. We will see how it goes...we found another TB that was a webkinz which gave us the idea, so just bc its a webkins, doesnt mean it will go missing. I hope not. Thanks again, Jim
  18. Ok, I have recently purchased a TB for my daughters bday. She has decided on what to attach to it. We have registered it and activated it. see TB2K685 I discovered it. I had her drop it in the nearest cache to our home to start its journey then she retrieved it b/c she still has it in her possession. after reading some other posts, i thought this was the wrong thing to do, so we deleted those logs. was this correct? I want to be sure this starts out on correctly. Now what do I do? I guess what I am asking is how does it start its trip? Does its mileage start from the first cache it goes in? Also, can she take it w/ her and drop/retrieve it to start giving it mileage? Is this dipping? I thought she may need to do this b/c it needs to go in a good size cache as its a webkinz toy. thanks in advance, Jim
  19. What should I be looking for in the description of a GPS that will indicate high sensitivity? Is it WAAS?
  20. CHEAP! the pn40 i looked at were $400. I was content w/ my camo until I couldn't get the same reading twice in my back yard...it wasn't even close.
  21. If I have better reception, won't my accuracy improve, too. I guess I am confused why I couldn't get the same reading 2x or more in my own backyard.
  22. Greetings cachers, I have an eTrex Camo that I bought for my first gpsr as I decided if I wanted to continue in this sport. It appears I want to continue, so now I am looking to upgrade. My biggest issue w/ the camo is that it does not seem very accurate nor does it keep signal in the woods. I tried to hide something in my backyard for my daughter to find, but I couldn't get the same set of coordinates twice at the given location. I tried marking the spot and walking away and back about 10 times. My question is: Which is the next Garmin GPSr up from the camo that will get better reception? I am still new and have always been cheap, so I don't want an Oregon, Colorado, etc. It is my understanding that the camo is NOT high sensitivity. Is that correct? Which is the least expensive garmin that HAS high sensitivity? I don't need maps, color, etc as I have a car gps to get me close and all I am doing is following the arrow. Thanks in advance, Jim
  23. I believe i am having the same issue. I have a Garmin Etrex Camo. I am NOT a premium member (yet) I downloaded and installed the communicator. the test page shows it's installed. when I click on send to GPS, all I get is "Can't get it to run? Try installing the latest plugin here." Am I able to use this feature? Also, I have downloaded GSAK, I was able to load a waypoint from there...not that I know what I did to make that happen.
  24. Thanks to everyone who offered input. I purchased the camo for $40. I also have ordered a data cable and downloaded GSAK. 2 questions: 1. can someone explain to me how "route" works on the etrex I am confused when i select "follow" I have 2 choices. what is this about? 2. how can I create a list of POI's to upload to my TomTom car gps? (I just downloaded GSAK) Thanks in advance.
