  1. Which model sportrak? I have the base model (yellow body). It only accepts the Points of interest and waypoint software, no mapping ability software.
  2. I'd like a color display GPSr. I would primarly use for driving in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. I would also like to geocache with it. I'm not sure which software would be the best. For road trips, I'd like map detail that would show county and FM and RR roads. I think some have a "library" of points of interests and places to eat, etc. That would be a nice to have too. I'm thinking of the Sportrak color, Meridian color or the Garmin 60c. What are your thoughts?
  3. Thank you tirediron for the quick response. So If I download waypoints from geocaching.com I can do that directly to the palm? Is there an automatic way to download all the verbage that goes with each cache or do you have to imput that manually into the Palm? Obviously I know nothing about Palms!
  4. Fry's elecronics has refurbished Palm Vx's with 8mb and rechargable batteries for $79.99. Is this a good price, and if so, could I use it for assisting in geocaching? In other words I'm a n00b, and I see various posts about Palms. Do people store waypoints and maps on them to use with their GPsr's or buy the GPS module for the Palm (don't know if that's available for this model Palm) or exactly what do they use them for? I currently have a Sportrak base model but am thinking of upgrading sometime to something that has mapping capabilities.
  5. Sent mine in on Monday, got it back that Friday. They replaced the top cover with the cracks in it, put two new batteries in it, sent two new manuals( one english, one french) and sent a holder for in the car. I'm happy with the service and quick response.
  6. I sent my Sportrak off this morning to have the cracks repaired under warranty. Wish me luck!
  7. Sportrak (yellow case) DC 25/03 bought 12/28/04 Ok, disregard previous post from Maynerd on page 2 about no cracks: Under 8x magnification, I see cracks on 3 of the 4 bottom screws. Taking it back to Fry's tonight to see if they will exchange.
  8. Sportrak basic (yellow case) No cracks Bought 1/04 DC 25/03
  9. Ok, I'm a noob. I do have a serial port on my computer. Broke down and bought a charger /data cable combo. Hooked it up fine and started downloading waypoints last night. Works like a dream so far...
  10. How come no one makes a USB Data cable for Sportrak? It's not like USB is "new". I'm sure there are more computers out there with USB ports than 9 pin serial ports! I know I can get a 9 pin--->USB adapter cable and a 9 pin serial Data cable, but come on, those two cables combined cost more that what I paid for my Sportrak!
  11. You could buy the 60c now and just buy a Casio watch that has a compass and barometer built in to take along when you need that info.
  12. I knew it was too good to be true to pick up a Sportrak basic at Fry's on sale for $99 and a rebate on top of that to boot=$69 final cost! Thought it was a good deal. So I guess I'll examine mine when I get home and keep my fingers crossed. I've only been walking with it once, so I hope no stress cracks have developed. I'm very new to the sport (haven't yet tried to find a cache yet), and am looking forward to geocaching adventures!
