Live365.com and other sites like it pay BIG bucks to ASCAP and BMI for the rights to broadcast music. As a subscriber you get the benefit of their payment. quote:Another case-in-point is that RIAA is really interested in people _making money_ while illegally distributing copies. That may appear to be the case, but does the mere fact that they don't have the ability to go after everyone make it OK to steal the works of professional artists? quote:Why do they sell blank video tapes at a video rental store? Why do they sell blank cassettes & CDrs at a music store? So I can tape a song, or a movie, or a TV show to watch later or to archive; not so I can give them to all my friends. quote: . . . gave it away to a friend of mine, I don't think any enforcement agency would care.So breaking the law and stealing is OK because the technology exists and you're not likely to get caught. That's nice. Next time you're parked in the woods and a half hour from your car, maybe someone will come along and siphon a few gallons out of your tank; it must be OK because they sell hoses at K-Mart and no one is likely to catch the thief. Makes perfect sense now, thank you for clearing that up. =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room.
  2. quote:Originally posted by RedwoodRed: Copyrighted materials, whether they are some of my website templates, graphics, software or music DOES NOT DO HARMFUL PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL DAMAGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT OR THE PEOPLE WHO UTILIZE THEM. It is an issue of ethics. The above illicit materials are not. So this is a matter of situational ethics. Some laws are more deserving of enforcement than others? I'm surprised that as a copyright holder you are in favor of pirating music and software. Please tell me again where I can find some of your website templates, apparently it is OK with you if I trade them around with all my friends so everyone can use them "for the purpose they were intended: to bring the enjoyment of [websites] to those who will appreciate that joy." Or is it that it's OK to steal some copyrighted material, but not others? I was trying to stay out of this, but it's just gotten so ridiculous now that I had to jump in. Placing pirated music and software in a cache is akin to distributing it commercially. From a legal standpoint it could have a quasi-commercial purpose in that it could concievably innure a benefit to the person who placed it. It's not likely, but in terms of standing or status in the geocache community it could be argued that the person placing the pirated materials gained something from that placement. I'm not saying it would be a successful argument, I'm not a judge or a jury, but it's definitely an arguable position. Bottom line, IMNSHO, stick to placing things that have been legally purchased or made by the placer, and deemed safe and appropriate by the community; and keep away from questionable stuff. =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room.

  6. Earlier tonight I went to a Trivia Night in Steeleville, Illinois. While there our team did not win the contest, but I managed to win a 50/50 raffle. This gave me enough cash to get my GPSR a week ahead of schedule. So on the way back from the contest, about midnight, I stopped into the local Wal-Mart here in Belleville and purchased an eTrex Yellow. I knew from my prior trips there that the devices were kept under lock and key, so on my way in I asked the Head Cashier if she could send someone over to Sporting Goods because I needed something out of a locked case. She said that was fine, as long as I didn't want guns or ammo. After assuring her that I didn't I went straight to the Sporting Goods counter. I waited around for someone to show up and after a few minutes I picked up the house phone and dialed "0". After explaining myself again, the sales-droid said she would send someone over. In five more minutes a stock person named "Steve" happened by and asked if I needed something. Steve was the only competent person I met there tonight. He needs to be moved into sales. Steve then called "Dan" the Assistant-Manager-on-duty who came to our rescue with the keys. Dan looked all over and couldn't find the eTrex Yellow. He found the Camo, but it's $10 more with no more features I need. So he gave the keys to Steve (the "stocker"). Steve found the behind-the-counter cache of eTrex Yellows in just a few minutes while Dan, Mr. Management, was trying to decide if he could sell me the unit out of the display case, sans documentation. Oh, and they have to walk you up to the front with such a valuable item lest it be stolen. In the end I made it home with my sinfully obtained booty. Will be seeking a cache first thing in the morning. Thanks for listening. =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room. 7. quote:Originally posted by Chris JuriCACHE: but now I'll be having no idea where I am eXACTly for another week or longer! You could always do what I've done for the last couple weeks, you could seek LetterCaches using the clues from Letterboxing.org. That way you can log a cache without your GPSR. =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room.
  8. quote:Originally posted by ApK: Does anyone have a problem with the idea of posting a cache to multiple cache site, eg, here and [the N-Place]? I hope nobody has a problem with it. I've seen a number of comments from people saying that a cache belongs to the hider and he or she is free to do what they want with it. If it belongs to the hider, it's up to them how to publicize it. (And the LetterboxCaches are already listed on two sites, Geocaching.com and Letterboxing.org.) =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room.

  10. quote:Originally posted by Iron Chef: . . . a 9K photo and a 100K photo will still take just as long to load . . . Sorry, but that's just not so. A 100k photo takes 11 times longer to load than a 9k photo. Also, I didn't meant to suggest that all photos could be made that small. But 100k is a reasonable limit. And the suggested increase to 120 or 140 would not make a noticible difference in the quality of the pictures uploaded. If a player has a 120k photo to UL then a very small, almost imperceptible, change in resolution or a slight crop, or both, would bring it easily under the limit. And the fact remains that 72dpi is the resolution limit of the monitor. If a picture needs to be 300 pixels wide to display on the page, that's fine, but it has nothing to do with the hardware resolution limits. I must have missed where it says that these pictures were all resized to 300 width, if I had known I would have made my TB picture 300 wide. Now I know that I can work with it. I wish I had seen it printed somewhere before I upoladed the pictures. =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room. 11. quote:Originally posted by The Boonie Man: I found that pictures set to 72 dpi look like crap (very pixelated) when viewed next to log entries. At 96 dpi, the problem goes away. The file size should barely change between 72 and 96 dpi, both should be very small files. quote:Of course none of this applies, if we're talking about viewing the original picture by itself.Until just now I didn't know we weren't. I was not aware of the type of picture "next to a log entry" that you're talking about. So I posted a picture at this cache to see what you mean. The problem is that they stretch the image to be so huge. I would think Jeremy would want to fix that to help keep file size down. The image by itself is big enough to look good on the page without any enlargement, and the file is a tiny 9k. Jeremy? Can that be fixed? =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room.

  14. quote:Originally posted by Japonis: If a geocache is placed on private land, is there a need for the land owner to get some form of release from cachers? I've been wondering this myself. I have an excellent place, on private property, picked out to hide a cache. The property owner will give consent, but is worried about liability. I want assure them that there is no problem, but I really can't. Does anyone have any advice? =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room.
  15. quote:Originally posted by Ranger Rick: Jeremy, any chance to get the 100kb limitation raised to about 120kb? I hope not. Any (repeat ANY) pic can be posted in adequate quality for well under 100k. The last pic I posted relating to a cache was this one and it was 9k. I'm really not trying to brag or anything, but 100k is a HUGE picture. Make sure you set your image editing software to save at no more than 72dpi and you will never have a pic over 100k. 72dpi is the maximum (yes, maximum) resolution that can be displayed on a standard monitor, any resolution greater than that is only useful if you need to print out a picture. I hope that is helpful. =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room. [This message was edited by Opus P on March 14, 2002 at 09:45 PM.]

  17. quote:Originally posted by Team Rex:What is the general consensus here on placing a cache in a park that charges an admission fee? Here's a group of caches that p***ed me off earlier today: These three caches are available only if you are staying in one particularly dismal KOA pavement predominant campground. I used to live in that area and was looking for some ammo to try to entice friends in that area to try this thing, and I come across this. Is this sort of thing common? Any cachers in Michigan that know about this situation? That area has huge tracts of available park land that would be excellent caching places, and this doofus puts all the caches in a KOA. Within one mile of that KOA there's a wonderful, public, park with trails, etc. that would be great. 22. quote:Originally posted by harrkev: $30 is a *lot* to pay for just a database and forum. Three important points here. 1. You seem to be forgetting that the subscription is optional. Free access will still be available. 2. You say just a database as if it's a simple thing to do. Well, it isn't simple and it isn't cheap. 3. You don't have to pay $30. I didn't have a spare $30 this week, so I signed up for the $3.00 option. If I don't have the spare $30 by next month, I'll let the $3.00 renew. If I don't have the $3.00, well I'll have bigger problems than whether or not to pay for Geocaching.com. Hope that helps clarify. =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room.

  25. The list we have so far, not including sensible clothing and footwear: 1. GPSR (pending) 2. Compass (pending) 3. Wife (KittyCacher) 4. Max & Bobby (Dog-Cachers) 5. Maps (MapQuest!) 6. Beer 7. Diet Pepsi (for KittyCacher) 8. Digital Camera (Not going to leave it in the car next time!) 9. Trinkets, etc. That pretty much covers it. Oh, and of course #6 requires a cooler and ice. (FWIW, KittyCacher drives if the #6 overpowers the Penguin.) =-=-=-=-=-= Opus P Crathvaf Ehyr Visit my Buddhist Reading Room.
