  1. The 'dryer lint' made me lol. So sorry about your trackables. I have yet to buy any, but am thinking about it. It seems like such a neat concept, except there seems to be so many problems with them disappearing! I can understand them going missing eventually, that much is inevitable, but going missing right away? Crazy.
  2. Thanks Kunarion and Manville, I have really enjoyed it so far and will probably get a membership. I guess I was just surprised at how difficult it was to try it out for free and felt they could do a better job getting people interested before throwing 'buy premium membership' at them at every turn. I always thought geocaching was essentially free, but it turns out I was wrong. I might have to look for that app...
  3. I am running into the same issues as a non-premium user just trying it out. I find the system very frustrating to use actually, so much so that I don't want to pay for a premium membership because I am annoyed. I know it isn't that expensive, and I think I will buy a membership, but it is a bit discouraging to use as a free user. Partly because I can access so many caches on my computer at home, but then I go on my phone (which doesn't even have a sim card) and I can hardly get anything. Even third party apps seem to have the same limitations as the official geocaching app, only premium members can make use of the full app. Although maybe I just haven't looked at them closely enough. I have found myself typing coordinates into my phone, in the field, in the snow, with cold fingers, not fun. So far the best thing I have found is to put together a list of caches I want to go for, at home with the computer. Put the list on my phone, then copy and paste coordinates on the phone when I get out on the trails. Of the several apps I have used, I like GCtools the best for navigation so far. It will only allow you to load one set of coordinates at a time though. You could geocache in a group, let the premium members navigate and the attendees find the cache once you get close. They could all have a say in picking the next cache to head for too.
  4. Like many others, mine is an online handle. I have used it for years but it does have a bit of a story behind it. I loved playing Pokemon on the gameboy, mostly on my own, or with my brother. But I knew this guy who had an Espeon named SunCat. I liked the name so much that I stole it and named my own Espeon SunCat. Then I started using it for myself as well, even building a character around the name. At some point the last name Rune got tagged on by my brother, Rune as in mystical rune letters. So if SunCat is taken, it becomes SunCat Rune. Also, I love cats. I wasn't sure if I should use it for Geocaching, or use my own name or something a little different. However, most people seemed to have handles rather than names, so that is what I went with.
  5. I take my Canon point-and-shoot (ELPH 330 HS) almost everywhere I go. It lives in the pocket of my coat, etc. I also have a mirrorless Sony Alpha A5000, but am not used to carrying it a lot. I generally travel quite light, but if I think I am going somewhere special, or have something I want to capture, I will bring more gear.
  6. Since posting this I found a couple threads on the same thing. Seems I was only seeing the last 30 days of topics, had lots more to look through once I fixed that. Here are a couple I found. Fantastic TB stories http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=335015 Fantastic story of a Travel bug http://www.michalkupsa.cz/blog/fantastic-story-of-a-travel-bug-41.html Largest Travel Bug You've Seen http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=209744 Oldest can of beans http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=336925
  7. New to the community, so forgive my inexperience but I found a box yesterday that needed replacing. The owner seems to be MIA as far as I can tell. What are the thoughts on replacing a broken box? Like, the cache is still there, and people still find it from time to time, but the container is broken open and wet.... I would even consider adopting the cache, but it seems that isn't possible unless you can get in contact with the CO?
  8. Wondering if people could share their favorite trackables and trackable stories. Ones that have lots of pictures, descriptions, traveled to interesting places, etc. I am new and think travel bugs and geocoins are a really neat idea, but am having a hard time discovering really interesting ones by just looking at the most recent logs. I would love to hear peoples stories about their bugs (or coins) or ones they follow.
