  1. I have access to two of these units to teach a 4-H geocaching class this summer. Any information about it would be appreciated.
  2. Thank you everyone for responding. I know it's hard to place actual caches in the parks but I KNEW someone couldn't pass up the chance to do something at such a great place. I will continue to monitor and keeps sending hints, suggestions or links. Geo"K"
  3. Last year we vacationed at Disney and did some geocaching while there. We were amazed at how many caches were in the area. Now we wonder if anyone has ever heard of or tried a "geo-event", official or unofficial, centering on or involving Disney World Orlando?
  4. My parents are spending two months near Merida Mexico on the Yucatan penninsula. They have just started geocaching and I'm trying to find maps that can be downloaded to their Garmin Legend to use while visiting the area. Any suggestions? I have MapSource North America but it doesn't have anything for Mexico beyond the very major highways. Any help would be appreciated.
  5. Check out the website at http://www.tagfla.com to keep up with the organizing of local geocachers. We've had one event and one regular meeting with another to be announced on the site. You can also find out more about us at everythingtallahassee.com. ENJOY LIFE!
  6. I hope it isn't too late but there are so many very good caches in PC. Just go for the ones that have terrain and difficulty of 1 and 1 and you'll have no problems. Swamp in the City is good as well as Oaks by the Bay, Gator Day at the Bay, Path of Progress, Pier Park Cache- just to name a few. ENJOY LIFE!
  7. Although it's been a while since anyone posted to this question: here goes. We used clear push pins from the hardware store (they are sturdier than bulletin board kind) and reflective adhesive tape. We used a hole punch to cut a circle to cover the head and wrapped another small 1/2 inch strip around the shank. They are easily pushed into the tree (with the rangers permission of course) and repositionable if needed. For directional changes (go right or go left) we used small plastic hobby containers (20 for about $2 at Wal-Mart and less than an inch across) with a snap top covered with the same reflective tape and screwed with short screws into the tree. Then using a permanent magic marker, put L for Left, R for Right and X to mark the spot over the tape. The screw stays dry because it goes through the bottom of the container into the tree and the top with the L, R or X snaps shut over it. The screw also keeps the container from twisting. Putting them above eye level keeps them virtually invisible during the day. The trail was marked with engineer's tape but we found that placing them at dusk helps because the flashlight illuminates them but you can still see where you're going. Night caches are popular here in Florida but usually sought in cooler weather because of our reptile population. "K" in "MasterCacheR & K" Enjoy Life!
  8. Can anyone please advise how to make the degree mark when posting coordinates in the body of a cache page?
  9. We've found it helpful to look for things "out of place" such as a pile of sticks, rocks or a bundle of leaves and Spanish Moss. We didn't find our first cache and it nearly drove MasterCacheR crazy until we learned that the rangers had taken it and now it's been archived. Don't give up! Use other people's logs to give you direction if necessary.
  10. Down south they call it "marking territory".
  11. This is the first, uhh, really second thing my husband and I really enjoy doing together. I'm really more involved with the record keeping and searching than he is but we have a GREAT time.
  12. If anyone has the answer to my previous post, please respond to kdpeddie@nettally.com. Thanks so much!
  13. After reading responses to "paperless" geocaching, I purchased a used Handspring Visor Deluxe and it works perfectly. I have been able to download from the geocaching site in .loc format but it doesn't contain all the information I need ie: difficulty, terrain, hints, previous logs. I discovered that I need software other than EasyGPS so I downloaded Watcher but when downloading from the site, I still only get .loc files instead of .gpx files. Any suggestions about how to get the .gpx files to download instead of .loc?
  14. I have just purchased a Handspring Visor Deluxe. Initially I downloaded EasyGPS then realized it only imports .loc files so I don't have all the information I need. I tried to remove it using the add/remove feature on my PC but it wasn't listed there so it's still on my computer. I need advice about what software I'll need to download .gpx files so all the features in CacheMate will register on my PDA. I've read every OEM from software to hardware but still can't seem to get a straight answer. Please respond to kdpeddie@nettally.com. Thanks much!
