  1. I'd feel a bit silly owning a coin that says if it wasn't in a cache it was stolen..... I'd consider buying 2, and placing 1 in my umm... permanent coin cache... yeah, that's what my collection is... Edit: Opps, read the info, looks like there'll be a way to keep one, heh. But I'll get 2, just to actually have one float around in caches in my area.
  2. Okay, I'm back from my month of back to school terror (work for a company that sells school supplies, this time of year is very stressful). Here's my updated geocoin list. Hopefully that'll snag some trades, I'm pretty much interested in anything I don't have on that list. I'll let this go for a week or so, and then I'm going to start offering to sell some of my trade coins, at which point I'll entertain offers for the coins (why will I sell? I need to fund my own geocoin, plain and simple). http://www.joelcd.net/geocaching/geocoinlist.html
  3. I don't think it'll affect my caching much, really it'll just force me to plan a better/more efficient caching route. Wish me luck, I need about 35 finds this coming weekend
  4. okay I'll bite, if there's not already a waiting list, I'll take 1
  5. I don't know, but I bet if Genghis Khan was a geocacher, he'd be hoarding white jeeps
  6. I think I finally have an interesting photo concept. Now where can I find a horde of angry cachers carrying torches and pitchforks?
  7. I just picked up a jeep yesterday, It'll be in a cache this evening. I hope that's not too long
  8. > My home state (Tennessee) is on order - awaiting arrival. There's also "Geocachers of West Tennesse" or GOWT as usually stated on these forums > FLORIDA - Hubby's birth state.. again, is there a coin?? Not sure that florida itself has one, but the GeoWoodstock III coins have an image of florida on the coin. > CANADA There are two Canadian geocoins that I know of, 1. http://www.geocoins.ca/ these can be ordered through their site, and 2. Calgary Cachers I'm updating my trade list this evening, but I have an extra GOWT, Calgary Cachers, and Colorado. If people don't snag them, I'll see what I can do to accomodate you.
  9. How much would the cost be if split 5 ways? I'm considering getting a coin minted, but I need to sit down and figure out expenses and see if I can do it. Does the design need to be approved at the time of purchase?
  10. If I sold any, it would be association or group produced coins, as I have a policy of only getting one of each personal coin for my collection, any extras don't tend to trade well (usually because if I can get a personal coin, almost anyone can get that same one), and the only reason I would sell my extras is if I can't trade them. I gotta figure some way to save up for my personal coin afterall (I've already ruled out pre-sales, so don't start offering to buy em)
  11. Got mine, it's okay I suppose, someone had to do a FTF coin, and it's a tough one to theme. I'm more interested in how next month's SA coin will look.
  12. I love controversy! Seriously I gotta start auctioning off some of my coins. Well, one last try and setting up my trade list and see if there's any takers, then off to auction...
  13. I don't really believe in "karma"... all said and done, I've gotten a few jeeps, and distributed them, most ended up with people that were very appreciative of the chance just to log one, contest or no. Usually I don't waste my time with contests, because no matter how good of an essay I write or picture I take, the general population is never in agreement that it is. I like contests where I can control the outcome, no matter what the odds, but in contests where other people control it, I've already lost.
  14. one of my many hobbies is in 3D modelling and rendering (jack of all trades, master of none) and I happen to be a fan of LOTR (actually anything tolkien wrote seems good). So I was inspired by the filmography to make a rendering of the one ring. So in all honesty, my avatar is 100% copyright free, not a framegrab or anything (unless they can copyright the idea of an image of a ring in fire...) Anyways, it's still been one of my best pieces of work, and has kinda stuck with me as my signature avatar. (not to mention orange is my favorite color, and orange and black seems to be the best combo, and I think the image blends the two pretty well)
  15. And back to one of my questions, since PP2595 and AE8962 are both marked as destroyed in the current NGS database, should I log them as destroyed on the gc.com benchmark pages? We don't have many active benchmark hunters in my area, but if it saves anyone time....
  16. actually I'll post another image tonight, the original 1922 blueprints (that were on display at the tower) Show the flooring for the observation deck, and if I interpret those right, the original flooring was tiled, with the same pattern as I observed. That's what really confused me about the description, it just doesn't match what I was seeing, other than the measurements and line of sight with the shoreview towers. Edit: Ahh, thanks Terra Vador, I should've checked the main database myself. Sad that the gc.com one is so out of date. I think I'm learning I need to compare the NGS database to the gc.com one before I go looking for stuff Thanks for the comments. Yeah being a radio guy I had to get the 2-way Radio option on my GPS, and I did know about the GMRS addendum, but haven't spent the $$ for the GMRS license, I figure being a HAM I don't want to mess with it really either.
  17. Hey all, Here I am again up to no good, looking for surveryor marks, trying not to step on anyone's toes (sometimes I guess that can be quite literal while in the field). I made it out to the Highland water tower this weekend, as I had mentioned I was going to try. Here's what I found. http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=PP2569 This one's good, and there, I got pictures to prove it. http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=PP2595 This one, as someone was kind enough to search the NGS database and pointed out that there's an option to search for destroyed marks, is of course marked as destroyed. And I can see why, there is no disc at the base of the tower, most likely this was an erroneous mark due to the altitude. Should I post this mark as destroyed on the gc.com benchmark page? It's tempting to log it, as the name is "Snelling Tower" instead of just "Snelling" so I could say I found the water tower, but alas I just don't think that'd justify it http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=AE8962 This one was being ellusive too. I couldn't find a chiseled X on the floor as described in the notes for the mark. Admittedly I've never searched for a chiseled cross before, but I wasn't seeing one anywhere on the obervation deck, unless the tile grout counts? As far as I can tell, it's the original flooring from 1922, the blueprints on display at the tower indicated the same sort of flooring. On a happy note, I found out the tower is opened on a weekend in october for a fall colors viewing, even if not for a benchmark I intend to go just to see all the trees in full color. Thanks again everyone for your expertise.
  18. Very nice monumenting Spoo! I tried for one of the gps-fun marks, but sadly, the post office decided I wasn't unworthy and it got lost in the mail (no fault of gps-fun or anything, just bad luck). Since then I have ordered my own personal marker off bertlsen's site. Now I'm just waiting to own my own property to put it on
  19. 10 or so, even the common USA geocoins tend to not travel as much as a travelbug. I believe I've lost 1 or two that I've released (probably by cachers that didn't understand they act like travelbugs, I'm not upset about it, just what happens).
  20. Egads! Sorry about the flame war, even if I don't really feel I was any part of it. Since I've resolved my questions about this mark, I'll close the topic. I may start a new one on the Highland Park, since I'll be checking it out this Sunday. Thanks again for all the suggestions, it's been very educational.
  21. Thanks Black Dog Trackers, I was noticing that myself. Looks like the only difference is the posted Altitude? I checked the NGS database and PP2595 isn't showing up. It's listed when you search for it, but when you call up the datasheet it generates an error saying it's not there. 1004 feet looks to be the altitude of the ground, considering PP2590 was monumented in 1888 (Hmm another old mark near a water tower, am I headed for trouble again?) and is near the ground. PP2595 shares the same altitude, I wonder if there's a mark monumented on the floor inside the tower? I'll have to check. I've also lucked out, the tower is open this weekend!!!! I'll hit it up on Sunday, get photos and all.
  22. Again thanks to everyone for the suggestions. Since I'm still new at benchmark hunting I've got a few things to learn. At least I know enough to ask questions before acting, especially as far as the NGS goes. I have found that looking for the older benchmarks can be rewarding, even if not in any official way. Next up I'm planning to visit the Highland Park Water Tower, another historic one with an observation deck. This one looks to have a few more benchmarks on and around it. Here's the search from the tower coordinates. http://www.geocaching.com/mark/nearest.asp...&lon=-93.166583 Since the tower is only open a couple times a year, I'm hoping to find all the marks in a single visit. Most of them as you'll see haven't been found yet (at least by geocachers/benchmark hunters)
