  1. here is a list of the items in this series (I believe this list to be complete if there are more, I would be inteterested to know about them) nine materials, seventeen versions stone - two versions: round and square glass - one version wood - two versions: light and dark leather - one version cloth - two versions pottery - two versions: red and dark ceramic - three versions: black, brown and white paper - two versions plastic - two versions
  2. you may want to consider moving these items to "unknown location" since you see them as clutter in your inventory, they would probably also be seen as clutter in the inventory of a geocache where they were not actually present last I knew, the only people who can move a trackable to "unknown location" are - 1. the trackable item owner 2. the owner of a geocache where the trackable item is indicated as currently residing you can deal with this restriction by dropping the items in a geocache that you own, and then moving them to "unknown location" if you do not own a geocache, perhaps someone that you know who does own a geocache would be willing to assist you as a last resort, a reviewer and/or moderator would probably be willing to help you out
  3. seeking a "Czech ceramic" geocoin in black I have one of the brown ones to offer in trade (may be willing to add some cash and/or another geocoin to the deal) if you have one of the black ones available, but are looking for something else, please feel free to contact me - I have a number of other geocoins that I am willing to trade (and cash money is also an option)
  4. go to the homepage for the trackable item, and do a "grab" log you can get to the homepage for the trackable item by clicking the link to the item in the inventory list on the event geocache page, or by entering the item code on the trackables homepage (geocaching.com/track), or by doing a search by trackable name or "owned by", and clicking on the correct item on the resulting list

if you are reading the logs on the geocache page (and I do not know of another place that they can be seen), then there should be a clickable item near the top that casts one of your favorite points for the geocache in question note that this will only be true if you have logged a find for the geocache (I do not believe that it is possible [or especially logical] to award a favorite point to a geocache that you have not actually found) it should probably also be noted that you may not award a favorite point to an event geocache (the main idea behind favorite points is to direct other geocache hunters to geocaches that are of interest, and by the time you log an event, it is probably over)
  6. also, make sure that your GPS receiver is in the correct datum as in, WGS 84
  7. I am not aware of any prohibition on having a GPSr in your carry-on luggage but, just to be on the safe side, I would recommend checking with the airline(s) in question, and researching the rules at your destination, if it is another country rules can vary by country, airline, and sometimes even a particular flight crew interestingly, as a "safety precaution", cellphone use is banned on all US flights (you can have a cellphone with you, but you are not allowed to turn it on) but there is no such restriction on Air Force One the reporters and politicians onboard are free to use their cellphones whenever they like as for countries, I recall that Russia once forbade the possession of GPS receivers (they may still do so, or my informatiom may be stale) I have heard tales of people being arrested for having a unit in their luggage
  8. here is my experience with this - statistics update immediately when someone looks at them, as long as it has been 24 hours since the last update you can see this by the update time at the top of the page (it is GMT, so you will need to adjust it for your local zone but you should notice that the minutes match the current time, if you are the one that caused the update) so . . . if you have not looked for a week, they do not get updated at all (why should they, if nobody is looking) then, when you go to have a look, they update right then but they will not automatically update again, untill 24 hours have passed I believe that this applies no matter who looks at the stats as in , you looking at your own stats, you looking at the stats of somebody else, or of somebody else looking at your stats however, as noted above, there is a clickable box on the stats page that will make the update happen right away
  9. if the rules are being followed, there should be a container (the minimum requirement for a geocache is "a container and a log") the only exceptions would be a virtual geocache or challenge geocache, which typically have no container nor log at all I have encountered several reasons for using this size designation - 1. the owner does not want to give away the actual size 2. it is a "nano" sized container (smaller than a micro) 3. what you are looking for is hard to classify (for example, a custom-made chunk of wood, with a film canister inside of it the film canister is a "micro", but the chunk would qualify as a "small" or "regular") there are probably other reasons and/or situations many geocache hiders are creative types and the guidelines are typically written to encourage thinking outside the box my best advise would be - "go and see for yourself what it is" (but do not expect any two such designated geocaches to be the same)
  10. fascinating stuffthank you very much for the link - - - - to the original poster - sounds like you'd better hope that the points make an equilateral triangle one way to work with this type of problem is to use UTM convert the points to this datum, and plot them on graph paper once you have worked out a solution point, convert it from UTM back to DDD MM.MMM (or just put your GPSr in UTM mode, and enter them directly)
  11. a small point of perspective . . . "boring" is subjective what one person finds boring, another may find "interesting", "relevant", "informative", "charming", "amusing", and (dare I say it) maybe even "exciting"
  12. I support the concept of treating logs on trackable items the same as logs on geocaches - they should not be deleted without a good reason and I also like the idea of locking logs after a period of time no delete, no edit, not for any reason, not by anybody - - - - and, since logs are not actually deleted (they just go where you can't see them) . . . I would support a clickable link on the item (or geocache) page that says "show complete log history" - it would include edits and deletes - this should not be too hard to implement, since it appears that Groundspeak folks can do it easily
  13. one compromise that I have seen - list a geocache initally as PMO then remove that restriction after a time - say a few months this gives paying members first crack at new hides but opens them up to everybody at a later date
  14. I believe that there several situations where distances of less than 528 feet are valid as I understand it, the 528 rule has not been around since the beginning some older geocaches were legitimately placed close together, and got grandfathered in when the 528 rule was implemented I believe that there are also exceptions for geographic barriers opposite sides of a river top and bottom of a cliff opposite sides of a major highway etc I believe that the main reasons for the 528 rule is to prevent saturation, reduce environmental damage from too much foot traffic, and avoid mistaking one geocache for another so, there are valid exceptions for geocaches to be less than 528 feet apart and, personally, I don't think that 490 feet is anything to get too concerned about
  15. just for future reference - some logs in the GC.com system do more than one thing for example, a "retrieve" log for a trackable item posts the log entry but it also moves the item from a geocache into your inventory deleting the log entry will only delete the log entry it will not "undo" the move the same applies to other, similar actions, such as "drop" and "grab" on the other hand, a "discover" log only does one thing, so deleting it takes care of everything it can be a little confusing, but once you visualize what is happening behind the scenes, it all makes a lot more sense
  16. just for future reference - "Joe Friday" geocoins are shaped like a police badge the tracking code is on the back, at the bottom the tracking code will begin with the letters "JF"

    TrackMe GeoCoin

sadly, this is not the casethe "only discoveries and/or notes" feature applies to items that are actually in a collection if you make your item collectible, but do not then move it into your collection, someone can grab it from you and then put it into *their* collection the catch is that once an item is in a collection, it can no longer "visit" geocaches (or be dropped or grabbed, either) an item must be in an inventory in order to do any of these things
  18. if you got to the trackable item page via typing in the private tracking code, then you will need to type it in again when you make a log * sadly, the system does not remember that you just typed in the code a few seconds ago but since it is possible to get to the trackable item page via typing in the public code (the one that begins with "TB"), they (Groundspeak) may have just taken the easy route, and require entering the private code, no matter what * this only applies to "retrieve", "grab" and "discover" posting a note does not require the private code
  19. that strikes me as a handy addition to the searching capability some searches do allow some limited multiple criteria pocket queries let you do distance, type and ratings, for example and the online search allows you to specify a distance for searches centered on a point (coordinates, zipcode, etc) - in fact, a "nearby" search centered on a geocache defaults to fifty miles (which I believe can be changed on your profile page, to a different distance [eg 100] or to a different unit of measure [eg kilometers]) but pocket queries don't appear to have the ability to search by name and name queries don't appear to have any additional selection criteria at all probably the easiest way for Groundspeak to implement what you need is to add name searchas to pocket queries and/or add the possibility of a distance restriction on name queries but I would be all for enhancing searches as much as possible for eaxmple, I'd like to see "hidden by" and "found by" added to pocket queries and the ability to select more than one geocache type in an online search (right now, you can ask for "traditional" or "multi", but not both in the same search) your best bet is to submit it as an "enhancement" request also - there are plenty of sophisticated selection capabilities in some of the third party tools (GSAK, for example) but since they typically work on pocket query results, and pocket queries do not do name searches, that is probably not a viable option for your current dilema
  20. I know several volunteer reviewers personally, and I can assure you that they are not paid on the other hand, most of the people who work at Groundspeak headquarters are paid as are some of the "field" admins but they are typically called "lackey", mostly for the purpose of distinguishing them from volunteers
  21. difficult to determine 1. in a geocache is the geocache infrequently visited ? (a high-difficulty puzzle, or a remote high-terrain hide, for example) it may not be missing at all, just very inactive 2. in the hands of a member could be activated, but in a collection might be at the bottom of a backpack or under an SUV seat things have been known to turn up after a year or two, sometimes even longer 3. unknown location here, too, it could just be misplaced, and turn up at a later time 4. any/all of the above might be incorrectly logged or it could be the owner using one of many techniques to "store" their items in such a way as to keep them out of their inventory all-in-all, it is probably only the trackable owner that can decide that an item is missing (and even then, there are happy stories of a duplicate getting released, and the original popping back into circulation) I believe that some vendors offer a resurrection service they provide a coin/tag, clearly labeled "proxy" (or some such) you send them your tracking code (and some money, of course) and they then engrave your code on the coin/tag
  22. sorry, but I do notI am working from memory, and it was several years ago I believe that I saw it on these forums, so you might be able to locate it via some searches but I think that it was a one-of-a-kind personal sort of thing not something that was made in quantity and offered for sale if you want something similar, I suspect that you will have to do the legwork yourself 1. acquire a MM coin 2. acquire a tracking code 3. go to a jeweler (or other such service provider), and have the code engraved on the coin with this technique, at least you get to choose a MM coin design that you like
  23. seeking - set of two "S" oval (bumper sticker) geocoins, one regular, one glow-in-the-dark originally from OakCoins/GeoSwag, "SG" tracking code prefix new/mint condition please, as these are for a collection prefer unactivated, but willing to adopt activated ones, as long as they have never been logged offering - pair of CRAKE suncatcher 2009, one brass (polished gold ?), one nickel (polished silver ?) new/mint, in original sleeves they are activated, but have never been logged if you have the "S" geocoins, but are not interested in the CRAKE suncatchers, please drop me a line, and we can probably work something out please use e-mail via my profile, rather than messaging via this forum
  24. some of the "blame" for all of this must be laid at the feet of Groundspeak with a single click, they have made it possible for someone to have every trackable item that is currently in their inventory visit the geocache that they are logging and, the way that the syetem works, you do not have the opportunity to post any comments (or photos) at the time that the visit (or drop, for that matter) is done - you must go to the trackable item page in order to do that - only a retrieve prompts you for a message at the time of the action that said . . . I am always happy to know that a trackable is still in play no matter what is happening to it I'd much rather see a bunch of visit logs, than no logs at all
  25. there are at least four possible answers to this question 1. how many tracking codes have been sold (to the best of my knowledge, they are generated at the time that they are sold) 2. how many of those were actually put on trackable items (some vendors buy in bulk, and use them over time and some creators have purchased more than they have used - at least so far) 3. how many of those have been sold 4. how many of those have been activated the answer to number one is - well over four million if you look at the page for a trackable item, you can see it's ID code this will start with "TB", and be followed by a string of 1 to 5 characters this is actually a number, in base 31 (but see * below) if you look at a recently-produced trackable item, it should have one of the higher numbers, and convert to over four million number two is probably less than number one, but still fairly close I doubt that there is a large number of idle codes number three is probably less than number two but again, probably not by much as for number four . . . this is likely to be a lot smaller than number three many geocoins are bought by collectors, and not activated I don't know of a way to get this number from a search on the website if you were to ask nicely, a reviewer and/or admin may be able to give you an answer and, obviously, all of the above are constantly changing as in, going up * the "digits" are comprised of zero thru nine, and twenty-one letters the letters not used are I, L, O, S and U (GC codes use the same numbering scheme) if you are after an exact number, it is actually a little more complicated than that the first 65,536 codes used base 16 - codes 1 thru FFFF after that, the base 31 numbering kicked in - codes G000 and higher leading zeroes are dropped, so TB01A2B shows as TB1A2B
