  1. Since Mr.Hofy has been on a pirate theme since we started Geocaching, we came up with this idea. World coins in a little zip bag and a label (that is also on the inside of the bag.) We leave them as our signature item and they can be used as swag or just collected as a gift from us.
  2. 30%+ DEET. It is the only thing that has worked for me. Last year I spent the big $$$ and got some Sawyer Permethrin. I followed the directions, double checking several times to make sure I was doing it right. What a waste of money. We went on an all day caching marathon a couple days after I treated all my clothing for that day. I would come out of the brush covered in ticks. Mosquitoes were also biting right through a treated shirt. My wife and brother in law only used 30% DEET. They did not pick up a single tick or get a single mosquito bite. This all was in Wood County Wisconsin. A very marshy and wooded area where the ticks and mosquitoes dine on Permethrin.
  3. That is an awesome story, thank you for sharing. Let's hope that TB puts on many miles now.
  4. We have several geocoins out there. Some have gone missing. We have also had some go missing for over 2 years that just start moving again. So for missing coins we do not proxy. Most new coins we release are originals. However once in a while between cost and a coin that means something to us we release a proxy. GXProxy does a great job with their event proxy coins. This is the one for Cache Bash V. Original on the left and laser etched proxy on the right. Our proxy for Cache Bash VI has over 6500 miles on it and is always moving.
  5. I have a small collection of coins (around 50). I have only really seen 3 different ways to store the coins and none of them really appeal to me. 1. In a box/container. There is no real way to enjoy a collection that is just a pile in some sort of box. Not to mention the flips the coins come in are horrible. 2. In an album. I used to collect currency coins as a kid, and the one thing that always bothered me was the stupid vinyl pages in a 3 ring binder. They would sag and tear out of the binder rings. I also hatedthe ugly stapled cardboard holders that go into the pages. Also the pockets are not big enough for some of the large geocoins today (50-55mm). 3. Shadow boxes. This includes any type of wall frame or table display. Very cluttered looking like an old lady's over filled china cabinet. plus you can only see one side of the coin. Are there any better ways to store geocoins?
  6. This is why I never proxy a missing geocoin or travel bug. They may show up again someday. I have a few that went MIA for over a year and one that was MIA for over 2 years that one day just started moving again.
  7. Took my wife's S4 my Moto M and the Delorme PN-30 for a little walk to the nearest cache today. All 3 are within a couple of feet of each other.
  8. I use the that app on my Motorola M phone and the accuracy is dead on with the Delorme PN-30 right next to it. My wife has a Samsung S4 but we have yet to install the app and try it. I may have to try it tomorrow.
  9. Well, here it is the 23rd of October and still nothing.
  10. Here is the reply I received from Geoswag. Hi Tim, We will a 2013 version, but we do not have a release date as of yet. We should hopefully have them available within the next month or so. Thanks, Support Could this mean another awesome Evil Halloween coin? I hope so!
  11. The Evil Micro series has been released every year since 2006, but I have found no information on a release for this year. Does anyone know if it will be happening? Thanks.
  12. Yes it is always best to read through the logs if possible for clues as to what you might expect at a cache. Also, Uncle Sam is pretty good at posting signs that you are approaching an area where you do not belong. This is one (of several) that we ran across this weekend.
  13. 430 miles and 6 1/2 hours. We may just have to do this one.
  14. Thanks, the source button was holding me up. Most boards I just write in the HTML and it takes it.
  15. I have a travel bug page I wish to update and the HTML formatting I have entered just shows up as normal text. Is HTML not allowed any longer?
  16. I think its time for several of you to LET IT GO! This should not have carried on for three pages. I asked a simple question, was berated because I felt it was unfair that the CO's under age 13 children were claiming FTF on two caches placed by their parents days before publishing & if you read back many many posts, another cacher did point out that the children were not utilizing very good 'manners' online with their postings either. They actually posted some nasty remarks, though my posting simply stated: "We were technically FTF, at 147 pm, as it was just published, though someone else signed the log 2 days before publishing" I was not rude about it, I just posted FTF and the time, after published and did acknowledge someone else's find two days before publishing. Both children posted rudely "NA NA NA BOO BOO I WAS FTF HAHAHAHA ON YOU" both of which have since been edited, but still in my book, are not internet etiquette appropriate (yes, I actually do know what that is, as I DO teach internet etiquette to children as well as adults!) Secondly, I really don't care what other sites are out there. I only do Groundspeak's geocaching.com, so, really, Wherigo and all of those others, didn't apply in this nor did they matter! Can you all just let this matter drop? Its gotten beyond ridiculous! Fine, you don't do FTF portion of the game. We do... let's just leave it at that and LET IT GO! MrsHofy
  17. yes, I removed my response! I learned my lesson... my opinion is wrong! Got it! There will be nothing more from me! I will leave forum posting to my husband instead!
  18. And in case I'm the only nosey person to look, these kids actually taunt the OP about it on the one they found two days before publishing. And this is why my stepson does NOT have his own geocaching account at age 11! You cannot expect a child, particularly one under the age of 13 to act responsibly. The 'taunt' actually is what prompted my original statement. I am all for kids having a great time with geocaching, which is why my 4 kids have gone, my two stepkids have gone, my niece, my nephews.... this is an entire family thing that my father got us all involved in. Game = rules/guidelines... Seriously, its in the very first sentence of 'What is Geocaching?' it is a game, hence, there are some rules/guidelines to make it 'fair and respectable' for everyone involved. Several of you said that "I" (BTW, this is MrsHofy) was being a bit too 'weird' about this. Ok, so lets put it in terms you might understand: Would you play Monopoly with a child and 'cheat' just so they could win or would you teach them that yes, sometimes you DO actually lose??? Sports: Really gotta point out that whatever major baseball/hockey/football/soccer team you follow there are no losers in them??? Sure! All of these things are 'for fun', but at the same time, aren't there a few respectful tips/tricks/rules/guidelines that make it fair and more fun for everyone? Isn't that the whole purpose behind having a few rules and guidelines? I'd also like to point out that those few that ruin it for the rest are the main reason why so many premium members have gone to publishing premium members only caches. And yes, WE, my entire family, take the geocaching hunt pretty darned seriously! Its a reason why we attend events, challenges and other competitions. And numbers game? Yeah.... and there are prizes (avatars or whatever) when you do reach certain levels: 100th cache, 1000th cache, most 5/5 caches, etc.. or perhaps those are only available to us premium cachers??? We also go for unique caches too. Whats the point of just a bunch of easy to find 1/1 park n grabs?
  19. And my personal thoughts on it are, especially with these two young children, the parents are doing them a disservice and teaching them dishonesty and unethical behavior. Thats just my opinion. And NO I don't have a problem with kids having fun with this! My stepson has been geocaching since he was 7, and LOVES IT! He also is not allowed his own geocaching name until he's old enough and responsible enough to handle it (in other words, drive) and he must be respectful of other cachers and practice CITO. Perhaps its just that I am too strict of a parent then, but I see geocaching as a GOOD way to teach a variety of skills to children.
