  1. Thanks for the reply, I do usually use the 60 in the car, however, I'm due to be away from home for an extended period and want to leave a sat nav system for my better half.
  2. I currently use a 60 CS with city select. Can I turn my Tungsten T5 into a GPS for the car using the second unlock code for my GPS to provide the mapping for the Tungsten? Alternativly should I just buy a second Garmin? Thanks for any assistance, including pointers to previous answers as I have searched but can't find anything. But then maybe I'm just crap at searching
  3. See here for how much this has disruppted the GC community: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=88308 Read the thread and see if you still think that those in the GC homeland are correct. From what I've read things may get even worse in Aus. Goodbye GC.COM for the time being I'm off to GCUK for the foreseeable future, along with a sizeable chunk cachers it seems
  4. Wow this really has stirred up a hornets nest. I have to say that I am disgusted by the way this has been dealt with by TPTB from the US. Whilst they may be letting this one run (maybe they are all still sleeping) it appears that all related discussions are no longer permitted. This is nothing more than censorship with a good deal of head in the sand syndrome thrown in.
  5. On battery type selection does anyone know why the 60 and 76 do not have the option to select anything other than Alkaline or NiMH whereas my old vista allowed several different ones; can't remember exactly what they were but I could select Lithiums. To remove this function seems a retrograde step to me.
  6. Yes but the display on the 60 & 70 series are both exactly the same
  7. AtlantaGal you'll have to keep a close eye on that GPS as when it fails there will be little warning, this has been one of the complaints against Lithiums. Ibelieve that this is becuase most GPSr use voltage drop in the battery to messure the batteries state, however, as Lithiums give a constant voltage until they fail current (no pun intended) battery meters don't work. PC Painter - There is more to battery choice than just cost; much the same as GPS choice I suppose ;-)))
  8. AtlantaGal are you using lithium batteries or the new Energiser e2. Energiser Lithium batteries are Light blue and the e2's are silver. The e2's are marked alkaline on the battery but advertise the lithiums on the back of the pack. This can lead the buyer to believe that they are buying lithiums when they have bought alkalines. The e2 is a great battery but Lithiums out perform even these.
  9. If you are finding that battery life is an issue in very cold weather then I'd suggest you try Lithium batteries. Cost a lot more but they last so much longer and remain unaffected by the cold. To save money switch between standards and Lithiums depending on the temp. Oh and make sure you keep the alkaline batteries warm when possible as they lose performace very quickly in the cold.
  10. The type of files I am trying to load look like this: Datum,WGS84,WGS84,0,0,0,0,0 WP,D,SCOT01, 56.79691, -005.00351,2/29/2004,00:00:00,BEN NEVIS WP,D,SCOT02, 57.28779, -005.11522,2/29/2004,00:00:00,CARN EIGE WP,D,SCOT03, 57.20677, -006.22418,2/29/2004,00:00:00,SGURR ALASDAIR WP,D,SCOT04, 56.38641, -004.54035,2/29/2004,00:00:00,BEN MORE Hope you can help Thanks Oh and in a perfect world this utility will be USB compaltible. (added during edit)
  11. I have several waypoint lists that are text files. I have searched the web, and this forum, for tools that will allow me to get the waypoints into my 60CS. I have tried GSAK, EasyGPS, GPS Babal and Waypoint+; all failed for a variety of reasons (one of could be I'm a clutz). Can Anyone point me in the direction of a utility that will allow me to do this simply? The only mapping and waypoint managment tool I normally use is Garmin's Mapsource. Thanks in advance for any help.
  12. QUOTE ashoofak: ditch normal batteries in my head torch forever Are you using an LED torch? If not, switch now! (As many LED's as you can afford, preferably w/AA's...) Not yet but I am getting a Petzel Myo 5. My head torch is used in alpine style climbing where wheight is a premium. The fact that they will not fail due to the cold weather was a critical decision maker. I need my torch to work at its best during the wee small hours when the temp is at the lowest. Therefore the cost issues become far less relevant. I should add that the expensive Lithiums are only used where their weight, longevity and cold weather performance are required. However, as the price comes down I believe they will replace standard batteries in all uses.
  13. The cold weather performance and weight of Lithiums in head torches was the driving force behind my change to them. The loss in performance is dramatic (some GPS (vista?) have a lithium setting to alleviate this problem), however, when you factor this against the fact that you haven't got the continual decline in performance I believe this is a good thing. Do you you want a battery that performs at 100% for 1 hour then degrades until complete failure or one that last 2 - 4 times as long and gives over 90% of optimum performance for the period. I remember seeing a trial on the web showing the cold weather performance of the various batteries and the results prompted me to ditch normal batteries in my head torch forever. I'll atempt to find it again in the comming week but I think that it was commisioned by Petzl.
  14. Dear all, below is the reply that I got from Garmin regarding this problem. They were very prompt in there answer and whilst there is no time line it is positive that the problem is being taken seriously and I can only hope that we have a fix soon: David Thank you for your email Yes this is true it does seem there is a problem on the GPS 60cs, and the problem is being looked at, hopefully with a fix for it very soon. I hope that this is useful Steve Product Support Associate
  15. Lithium batteries are expensive but they do last as long as they claim. I usually use 2100mAh energiser rechargables, however, if I am going to be away for an extended period then the lithium batteries go in. They may cost more but for me not having to carry the extra batteries is a real boon. Lithium batteries are also worth their weight in gold in very cold weather where they become my battery of choice. Unlike standard alkaline and rechargables they do not suffer the huge drop in performace that usually occurs. In fact there is virtually no change in their performance. edited for typo
  16. This is all very good but can get tide info for areas outside the US. Specifically Oman at the moment but am due to move in the new year so I am interested to know. Also do any Magelans offer this type of info
  17. Now that just makes me weep as one of the reasons that i stuck with Gramin (at an increased cost) was that there mapping was consistantly better. Does anyone know if Garmin intend to add any topo maps to their line up?
  18. I'll be returning to the UK shortly and am looking to get Topo mapping software for my Garmin 60CS. Are there any topo prducts that will show full topographical data for the UK, like the OS ones, on the GPS itself. If not, what software is seen as the best for planning trekking routes etc. I should add that I will already have City Select 5.0 All answers greatly appreciated.
  19. Just a note to let you know that they are defo meant for the storeage of 81mm mortar bombs, not maps etc
  20. OK so at least someone else has the same problem as me. I have the default highway page on and my 60CS will always lock up sooner or later, but only on the highway page. If I track back using the map page it takes me all the way with no problems. I have lent out my 60CS for the weekend (Thur Fri over here) so I will post all my settings later. Oh, I'm using 3.5 and may downgrade if this is the solution :-( Come on Garmin this is a problem.
  21. OK so maybe no one has a tool for conevrting Military Grid Refrence System (MGRS) to lat long. Can anyone help with one that will convert UTM to lat long. I should be able to work out MGRS to UTM manualy.
  22. I have been looking for a simple and small (shareware) utility for a friends HP pocket PC. He does not use it with his GPS but does need to convert MGRS grid references to Lat Long frequently. Hope someone here can help. Many Thanks David
  23. Ben Pid, When stepping out into the great outdoors I always take full responsibility for where I am going, where I am and, as far as is practically possible, for what happens to me; lightning strikes etc excepted. With regard to GC the Cache Log is merely the individuals personal perception of that cache when they placed it. It is up to the cache finder to research the cache fully before setting off. This is part of the fun after all. You should be using paper maps, electronic maps, previous cache logs and any other source of information that you can lay your hands on. And finally when you are actually on the ground it is the indiviual choices we all make that are far more important in preventing accidents. Not anothers perception of the area some months before. Hope this doesn't sound too rant like but I HATE the whole lets minimise and remove risk culture which is threatning and permeating the whole outdoor scene. Dave
  24. Thanks Lactodorum, that was exactly the kind of link I was afer. I must have looked at at least 10 other threads and none of them were as informative. I'm sure I'll get better at this searching thingy with practice.
