  1. Your generousity prompted me to take the plunge! I signed up for a one year membership earlier today. That may sound weird, but I thought you showed a lot of class by picking up the tab. This organization is definitely worth supporting. Now I can't wait for the account to be activated!
  2. I was mostly lurking for a long time. I'm posting more often now.
  3. Our crew really enjoys geocaching. It gets us out of the house on drab winter weekends when we would normally stay inside.
  4. Getting them a GPSr is a good idea, but do we know whether they have a computer or an internet connection? Nowadays it seems like everyone does, but you never know.
  5. You said this in "Do the regulars intimidate the posters?" and I responded to it there, too. I'm not sure this is a problem. It's true that a community of tens of thousands is represented by a few hundred (give or take) regulars, but that doesn't mean the regulars aren't a good cross-section of geocachers in general. Besides, even if they aren't, it's all Jeremy has to go on unless you can figure out a way to bring more voices to the forums. Also, I'd better get back to the hunt. My post to find ratio is becoming dangerously close to even!

  7. No, Ive seen most of the threads (or discussions about them) you mentioned as I poked around the forum. For the most part, I don't see these discussions as negative, but it does amaze me that some people refuse to take a step back and try to look at an issue from another perspective. IMHO these people have an agenda, and no amount of reasoning, compromise, or logic will sway them. Even so, I still find these threads informative (and entertaining ). The issues are discussed by a lot of different people with varying perspectives. The discussions don't usually get too personal. Sometimes you can sense anger or frustration in someones post, but the name-calling is kept to a minimum. Of course, I reserve the right to change my opinion about this topic when you disagree with ME!
  8. Ouch! I'm guessing you are not easily intimidated, Top Pin! I don't agree with you though. I have found most of the topics/posts informative, usually polite and often funny. I haven't noticed a lot of flaming. (Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places!) I get the impression that it isn't tolerated and that's okay with me. Finally, I only skimmed through this topic so maybe someone mentioned it already, but I don't think there are responses from more than 30 users with less than 100 posts in this thread. Hmmm... Maybe you regulars ARE intimidating! Edited for clarity
  9. I love it. How about instead of vacaching, you say vacachening?
  10. Thanks! Count me in. I'm trying to decide whether to take the plunge and subscribe for a year. Winning this would let me try it out first! Just read the above post! After posting this, of course. Hope I'm no too late!
  11. If I understand your post correctly, you had already removed the trash from the area. Calling the police after you took possesion of the trash probably would not have done much. It would have been your word against the dumpers as to whether you actually found it where you said you did. Disposing of the trash and sending a letter was, IMHO, the best course of action. But all of this gets me thinking...If I steal my neighbors trash, dump it in the woods, and anonymously call the police, would they get a fine? My neighbor better start treating me nicer!
  12. I found a micro near my house once. I was (and still am, really) a newbie and it was a plastic magnetic keybox hidden under a bench. I tried valiantly to open it, but after a couple of minutes in FRIGID weather, I figured (incorrectly) that it was glued shut. I thought that finding it was "the game" and I logged it as a find. I have since been back to the micro (in the spring) and it opened right up! Go figure. Of course, that time I forgot to bring a pen! D'oh! Maybe I'll log a second find once I actually sign the log!
  13. Or maybe he wants to find them and remove them. Some people are sooooo uptight! If caches in the parks start to go missing, I guess you'll know.
  14. The moderators in my head told me not to post and it scared me a little. Does that count? I guess it doesn't matter. I never listen to them anyway.
  15. We routinely cache with five children. Three belong to my friends, two to me and my wife. Trinity is three, she is a handful, but also a real cutie pie. She is the inspiration for our team name. Sam is seven. He loves to geocache. Jasmine is ten. She enjoys the company and the camaraderie as much as finding the cache. My son Kevin is twelve and he would geocache every day if he could. He loves the hiking, and the thrill of the hunt! Whenever he goes he wants to take a friend or two. Sometimes we let him, but only if the other half of our crew doesn't go. There are nine of us when the two families go out together and sometimes stealth (or a lack thereof) is an issue, and we are forced to abandon search attempts. My daughter Lauren is almost 15 and she can take it or leave it. All in all, I can't imagine having nearly as much fun without kids. When my friend Johnny and I cache on lunch break we rarelly trade anything, but when the kids are along they always find treasures they want to trade for!
  16. I really only experienced it on one cache, (maybe two, but I can't swear I listed a DNF on the second one) but since I've only found 42 to date, I thought that others might have had it happen to them. I did log a find on this cache the following weekend, which mentioned our unsucessful attempt from the previous week. Maybe that's why the owner deleted the DNF? There are other DNFs listed on this cache, but there are no "finds" logged by the DNF loggers at a later date.
  17. I am a comparitive newbie and I almost always log my DNFs. However, I have noticed that the cache owner sometimes deletes them after I go back and log a find. What's up with that? If I'm reading the previous posts correctly, I guess I have to be wittier when logging a DNF to help ensure that it won't be deleted.
  18. Well, I hope you're right about 30 or so being the magic number for most... We have logged over thirty so far and we are still going. However, as Spring approaches we are finding it more difficult to find time to look for caches. The weather is more cooperative, but there are more things competing with our time as well. I am an avid boater, and now I will be spending my weekends prepping my boat for a glorious summer in the upper Chesapeake. Beyond that, I know from attempting to geocache a year or two ago with my brother-in-law, the tree canopy makes the sport a little more difficult to find many of the caches. Also, ticks, mosquitoes, poison ivy, sticker bushes, mud, etc... tend to detract from the cache experience. (at least for me and mine) I believe that we will continue to cache, but, oddly enough, late Autumn and Winter will probably be the most productive times for our crew.
  19. Well, well, well... I suppose if you exchange the word "rules" for "laws" many people in Nazi Germany felt the same way! I'm guessing that you are a liberal, because you don't seem to like the idea that other opinions are just as valid as yours. As others before me have eloquently stated, questioning the "rules" is not necessarily a bad thing. It allows for the free exchange of ideas that may (and ultimately will) lead to change that will benefit everyone. (As long as it doesn't lead to bigger Government and higher taxes! )
  20. This is my fourth or fifth post, so I'm not sure I qualify as a lurker, but I tend not to post unless I need information, or my unless my acerbic wit can't be restrained.
  21. A Vista? You lucky bum! For my birthday all my wife gave me was a cold!
  22. Well, I had a StreetPilot lll thrown in my lap. My brother-in-law made me an offer I couldn't refuse. It came with lot's of goodies... (2) 128 MB data cards, external speaker/12v power adapter, a Mapsource CD set that he hasn't given me yet, (so I'm not sure which one(s)) the beanbag and permanent automobile mount, etc... He sold me the whole setup for $300.00! (He has always been very generous to me and my family) I'm not sure what he might be getting to replace this unit, if anything. Anyway, I have been using (playing with, really) the unit to get around town (the voice prompts make it easy) and I even used it to find and guide me to a park to go caching. However, I haven't been able to determine how (if) I can use this unit to geocache. I used the Legend once we set out on foot. I wasn't able to figure out how to enter coordinates on the Pilot. (Finding cities, addresses, intersections, Cracker Barrels, no problem) I haven't received the manuals yet, so maybe I can figure it out after I get them. But even if (when) I figure it out, it seems to be a battery hog, and I think I would look rather silly wandering through the woods with this unit! So my question has changed a little. Since I now have a unit that makes street navigation a breeze, (at least so far) which unit should I replace my Legend with? Is the Meridian Color still a good choice? Or is there something cheaper that would serve me better? (Strictly for geocaching!) Should I stop whining and just keep the Legend? P.S. How much could I expect to get for a used (but well cared for) Legend with Mapsource CD, and computer cable? I'm thinking $150-$200. Is this reasonable? Wow, I've asked a LOT of questions! Thanks to everyone who has already given advice and thanks in advance to anyone who gives me more!
  23. I believe the exact quote was "Cheese-eating surrender monkeys"! LOL! Anyway, thanks for everyone's opinion. I still haven't decided what to do, but I appreciate the input.
  24. Well, after reading all of these posts, I'm more confused than ever. I have an ETrex Legend, but was considering the Magellan Meridian Color. There seems to be an abundant supply in the places I've looked. Any advice?
