  1. I guess I should post an update for the Northern Ontario Geocachers group. The new site still being updated, but is up and running. The home page is northernontariogeocachers.com The forum can be found at forum.northernontariogeocachers.com
  2. This is how we dipped (visited) the TB in the cache. A bit of an added kicker to it... I had dipped it into one of my caches near the house when we got back to town. After dropping off the family and our luggage, I took a quick drive to check up on a cache that had two DNF this weekend. Cache was fine and I dipped the TB. I ended up having to change the date on the local dip to the next day in order to make the TB's millage show up correctly.
  3. Still stewing over that one incident? Yes, it is courteous to wait a day or two but ultimately the bug whereabouts trump all hurt feelings. That cacher who left it there got to enjoy the bug and they can still do a Discover. As far as I'm concerned you should be telling people to log it properly for you when you can't get to the logging anytime soon, not put someone else's bug on hold while you finish your vacation. What if the op had dropped it in another cache before they had a chance to log it as well? Seen it before. Now the bug is three caches lost and about to go MIA. Ny the way, feel free to refer that cacher to this thread. This is exactly why we specifically log the TB and cache we obtained it from right away. We were taking the long way home, hoping to pick up some caches along the way. Our two young boys didn't exactly agree with that plan, so this cache ended up being the last until home.
  4. I am looking for opinions on this and or ideas as to avoid issues. Background Story Was out with the family on a Geocaching/Camping road trip. Our two boys (2yrs old and 3 months old) are too young to log their own finds, etc, so it was my wife and I doing all the logging as we went. Since my wife and I both have smart phones, we have a habbit of logging particularly caches w/t trackables that we have retrieved and the trackables themselves right away, so we can potentially move them to another worthy cache while still on the road. Other caches found in clusters, or where we want to include photos are logged once we hit a free wifi hotspot or home. On the drive home (~195km from home) we picked up a TB in a cache found in a touristy area. It had not been marked as retrieved from another cache, nor dropped in this cache. My wife logged it as 'retreived from somewhere else', and once we got home, we marked it as 'visited' the cache we retreived it from. We didn't do any more caches between this cache and home as the boys where getting pretty restless. This morning (or late last night) I received a not so friendly email from the cacher that had placed the TB in the cache we visited. Apparently I failed to spot the note they wrote in the paper log asking that the TB not be marked until they returned home from their vacation. Here is the thing; Had we continued caching along our trip after this find, do we sit on this TB until this cacher gets home from vacation (when ever that was)? I have come across the occational trackable that was either mis-logged, or moved and not logged, so we thought nothing of it.
  5. I was going to post a similar thread, but I figured I would piggy back on this one. We're looking to put together a local event in a near by conservation area. We have plenty of space (loads of forest and trails). So far we are planning on putting out a handful of registered GC.com (permanent) caches (hopefully published later that afternoon) and include a few GPS/orientation games. Any suggestions on GPS/compass based games that we could do? Traditionally in this area, GC events are either meet & greet (coffee/ ice cream nights) or go out and hunt event specific placed caches.
  6. Thank you for the info. Contacting the CO shouldn't be a problem. I was more looking to find out how to do this if it was possible before approaching the CO. Three of the caches I am interested in (owned by the same CO) are going on 10yrs old (one of which was the first in our city) so I would really like to save them rather then have them get archived. Again, thank you for the info
  7. Does anyone know if it is possible for a CO to transfer ownership of one of their caches? The reason I am asking this is we have a number of worth protecting/maintaining caches (a few placed back in 2001) that where originally placed by a cacher that is not longer involved with the hobby. I do have these caches on my watch list, but it would be nice if the owner could knowingly transfer their cache to another currently active cacher.
  8. You could immediately disable the published caches, but they will be visible to the public. I'm not sure I'd trust all FTF hounds to ignore the cache pages until you reactivate them. I'm pretty sure the reviewer will remember your request, especially if you send them a reminder email a couple days ahead of the scheduled release. That is my concern. We are a small community, but fairly competitive. I am kind of disapointed I can't be part of the FTF race myself. Hopefully I'll set the bar high and have someone take one for the team next year so I can be out in the hunt race.
  9. That was the response I was looking for (but not exactly the answer I wanted). Thanks for the info
  10. Our area is covered by 3 reviewers so I was looking to see what has been done in other areas before I go emailing the reviewers. I suspect that I should be able to ask for them to be reviewed and approved, but disabled so that the responsibility of making them public will be left to me and not the reviewer remembering my request weeks later. Hopefully this works out.
  11. I know I can submit a cache to GC.com without enabling it (which means the reviewers won't see it). Is it possible to submit a cache (or number of caches in my case) for approval, but not have them go public once approved? Here is the background info; I am putting together a spring FTF challenge in my area. This consists of a number of caches (earth caches, traditional, and mystery/puzzle caches), all becoming publicly available at approximately the same time (give or take a couple hours). With the number caches, I would really like to make sure I have approval on all my caches before they become available.
  12. The shipping price listed on the site is Canadian Express Post (2-3 days delivery, with Insurance guaranteed). If you are patient, and want to save on shipping, we are doing shipping via snail mail. If you want to do the snail mail route, send an e-mail to customer service.
  13. Looking over my original post I quess I should have provided a bit more info to those that have never seen the geo-bike in person. First off, the coin is Size: 1.75" x 5mm (including the wheels). The wheels are free spinning (The spin on a center axil). Reference web site Up North Tracks We are offering standard post shipping for this coin, so the shipping out of country will be lower then express post. Please feel free to PM me or send us an e-mail if interested Mods: If this post brakes any rules, please feel free to remove the link.
  14. I would be a bit concerned about slips and falls with it on my back. I amost brought mine with me on the last trip, but was glad I didn't when I slipped on a rock and landed on my pack. That being said, I would have loved to have my L series lens up on the top if Ishpatina Ridge.
  15. I thought there was a way to set it as Discovered Only. That being said, it appears I can now drop my SRT in to caches and events. I'll check when I get home tonight and see if someone can actually mark my car as retrieved (would hate to have to steal my car back everytime it is marked on GC) When I go to your SRT4 Travel Bug page I see it marked "This is collectible" i.e. it's in your own private collection. When I go to log it the options I see in the drop-down are Grab from current holder: Mike & Jess Write Note Discovered it. There's no "Hot Wire this vehicle and drive off at speed". Your vehicle is safe from me. MrsB When we first activated the TB, "Grab from current holder" was not an available option. It's been a while since I looked at the settings on that TB. I'd better get on it before I have to steal it back from someone. As for the "Hot Wire this vehicle and drive off at speed".... my current anti-theft device (snow) should take care of that. On a side note; don't put a TB on a car you like to drive spiritedly. If you look through the logs, you'll see why (little embarising, but funny at the same time). Edit: I just edited the TB page for my SRT. There is now a check box labelled "Make this Trackable collectible". Removed the check mark, so no more stealing my car back.
  16. I'll be sending you a quick PM later tonight to take care of the budget meeting issue.
  17. In the logs for the cache, did someone indicate they dropped a TB? In our area, it is pretty common to indicate if a TB was dropped or picked up in the find log.
  18. What I have done when this happens is log the trackable as grabbed from the other cacher (with a note stating it was actually in the cache), then mark the trackable as "visited" the cache I picked it up from. This way, the trackable gets the millage.
  19. I guess I wasn't the only one thinking you where talking to a wall. I still don't see why anyone would create a food TB. The OP said they where going to go as far as epoxy the can. That sounds like a lot of work for a can of food. As an owner of a number of caches, I would be pretty vocal if a food TB was placed in a cache of mine.
  20. I thought there was a way to set it as Discovered Only. That being said, it appears I can now drop my SRT in to caches and events. I'll check when I get home tonight and see if someone can actually mark my car as retrieved (would hate to have to steal my car back everytime it is marked on GC)
  21. Canned sodas definitely do leak. I had a 6-pack of souvenir Cokes for 10 years, stored indoors. One of the cans completely leaked out somehow (don't even see a hole). One exploded. The whole top blew off. I was home at the time. Knowing the others in the 6-pack could blow at any time was tons of fun , as I decided what to do with them. No need to reply with stats on how many coca-cola travel bugs are out there just fine. I'm just relaying an experience. Soda specifically has an expiry date for that very reason. Bottle or can, most soda over time, it will destroy the lining (soda cans are plastic lined). I used Coke as an extreme example, but other foods are similar. Not to mention, when the food spoils, some will expand/contract, generating a change of preasure within the can. This could lead to seal failure of the can, which can result in a not so nice smell. All and all bad idea.
  22. It sucks to put out trackables, and watch them be picked up and sat on by the first cacher that grabs them. I have had that happen a few times myself. I am not sure about the area you are in, but here, November is generally when the snow starts here. Some cachers hibernate during this time of the year. If that is the case, they should have left them there and marked them as discovered. Anything is possible when your trackables are out in the wild. I know myself, I had picked up a number of trackables on a road trip one weekend, then had my GPS damaged. It took me almost a month to go out (by memory) and spread the trackables over my caches to get them back out.
  23. My wife has told me I have to put the handful I grabbed back in the box , so yes, we still have some available.
  24. The coin is the Antique Silver edition. There was two versions of the coin originally minted before they where discontinued.
