  1. Best cache in Hawaii has to be the Cache of the Holy Grail, unless it's since been superseded by some new creation in the past year.
  2. My find list isn't likely to grow very quickly. I found five on a trip to New England over Labor Day weekend before Maine, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania went live. I don't have any more trips planned this year. My script isn't fully automated (it requires manually downloading data from gc.com), but if you have Perl installed, I can send you the script and instructions.
  3. According to my (probably buggy) script: the hulk (7) kablooey (6) Team CB_Indy (4) ZSteve (4) Hopperz (4) cyclegreen (3) spaceteacher (3) capmango (3) hobo dude (2) Russ and Dana (2) Rich the Bushwhacker (2) nevcowpok (2) QT & the Beast (2) IC1 (2) 2 Sonians (2) ADS1 (2) Bushwhacking Queen (2) shanieh (2) kcds (2) yagergreen1981 (2) ModelCitizen (2) jenbut (2)
  4. Wouldn't the "correct" cache to place be one that requires that you have fewer than 100 finds in order to log it? Make sure to place it about 528 feet away.
  5. Maine seems to be a members-only cache. Is it going to stay that way forever?
  6. And some people would like to be able to search for Nighttime-specific caches. Currently, there's no reliable way of doing that. Many of the caches that have the nighttime-recommended attribute set in my area have it set only because the cache has fewer muggles at night, not because the cache is a fun night hunt. Figuring out what the local custom is for listing night hunts is basically impossible, as far as I've been able to tell when travelling. Some areas, like Dallas, have nice bookmark lists, once you find one of the night caches, you can find the rest.
  7. I'm guessing that it means what it says, and nobody will be able to create new caches or upload images until they fix it on Monday.
  8. I'm also getting the "Bad Data" error page. I have tried resending multiple times, but I can't get any emails to go through. I sent email to Groundspeak over a week ago and was ignored. I sent email to my local reviewer (Krypton) and he said it wasn't happening to him.
  9. Well, whatever it was, it's not happening anymore. I guess I should have taken screenshots or something.
  10. The site just logged me out and when I came back weird things started happening. The "log a cache" button (and many other buttons) seem to have vanished (or maybe they're hidden in submenus?). And now I'm getting all kinds of errors where the site seems to be trying to load some google.com web page??? Any clues?
  11. Possible solutions? Maybe try some puzzle caches. Perhaps the thief will avoid those if he can't figure out the location easily. Key locks or combo locks? Maybe there's some way to get local law enforcement involved? That's probably trickier, but maybe somebody here has some knowledge in that area?
  12. I found it interesting that another reviewer undeleted your log. I had a DNF deleted recently on an archived cache. I asked the owner why, and he said he thought he needed to delete all the logs in order to archive the cache. I emailed the reviewer who had archived the cache asking for log reinstatement, and the reviewer said that he could only reinstate my log if I had the cache owner email him asking for reinstatement. (I decided that would just be too confusing and resubmitted my log. The owner left it the second time. Now it takes up twice as much storage on GC.com servers.)
  13. Maybe you just need a bunch of kablooeys in your area. When I log a DNF (which is way too often), nobody even thinks anymore that the reason might be because the cache might not be there.
  14. Any chance you could test whether those browsers are in use and if not, don't bother including the Google Maps JavaScript? Right now, the Google Maps code just runs my device out of memory (and unfortunately purges all my email in the process) just to fail with an error message, leaving the old map showing (thanks for leaving the old map!). So, I've resorted to disabling JavaScript to save myself the hassle. This is also affecting many of the local cachers in my area (Marky, Nazgul, frivlas, kusanagi, Beckerbuns). On a PC, the maps are awesome. I used them last weekend to do a route to Yosemite and back. That's something that has been painful since Buxley's went away. Now, it's actually fun (and it'll be more fun when Found caches can be ignored)! Thanks for the improvement. I think this is the best change I've seen on the site in five years.
  15. That's a tough rule to live by. I already have over 850 DNFs, and I don't come anywhere close to following that strict of a rule. If I make a halfway decent attempt to find the cache, I'll log a DNF. If I just park the car and a cop appears behind me, and I drive off, I'll log a Note. If I walk up to a site at 1am and a dog starts barking at me and won't stop, I'll probably leave and log a Note. But, I do try to log something, so that cache owners know that I tried to visit. And many of these ARE cache maintenance issues. The cache owner should point out when a park closes at sunset on the cache page or warn about barking dogs. If police or persistent muggles are often in the cache area, it's useful information for the cache owner and other searchers. Some examples of Notes from this past weekend: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...00-845b58cfbcd7 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...bc-8e5913d5bce6 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...e0-7c1781c13e67 http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...f2-de9a8c941138 (There were 26 DNFs; so I won't post links to those.)
  16. I'm sure someone can beat my 13 FTFs in a 24 hour period. However, 12 of them, were in a 2.5 hour period. I only had 9 FTFs on the day that JoeSpaz hid 35 film canisters on his birthday in Fremont--that might be a record for single hides in a day? My personal records of note: 818 consecutive days with a logged find. (I doubt that anybody else has more, but I haven't checked.) 763 DNFs (I know Geo Dee has over 1000!) 13 consecutive days with a FTF (all different hiders) 10 consecutive days with a DNF
  17. I have logged over 700 failures. Who, in their right mind, would want to read them all? What idiot would create 700 bookmarks? Could the system even handle that many entries to a list? I've kind of assumed that you're the world leader in DNFs (over 800 by now). And you keep expanding the distance over me (I'm guessing I'm #2 at 671). Personally, I think my DNF logs are a lot more interesting reading than my Find logs. But, I wonder whether that's causing my local hiders to want to hide caches that I can't find.

    Owner Visit

I've always been in favor of a "Revisit" logtype that could be used for a Cache Owner visit or just a revisit by a cacher who doesn't want to log multiple finds on the same cache. These are different from "Note" which doesn't necessarily indicate whether a cache is still in place, especially since I've seen at least one program that counts how many of the last five logs are happy-faces in order to determine whether to indicate that the cache might be missing. Also, as others have pointed out, this type of log could updated the last found date for the cache. I think the hardest part is coming up with an option that doesn't confuse the average or newbie cacher, so that it's not clear which logtype to select.
  19. I'll take 10 metal, more if the price is closer to $3 than to $5.
  20. I have logged 603 DNFs, but only ten so far this month (after 36 in March). As far as I know, the leader is a geocacher in Texas: Geo Dee. I can only hope that this information can cheer you a little. There are others who fail and yet continue to keep trying.
  21. The calendar now appears when you click the "Geocaches" found link from the My Account page
  22. This is easier where I live (in California). I have not missed a day since July 15th, 2003, which puts me somewhere over 600 now.
  23. I've been trying to get somebody to do this hike with me for a long time; so I'd like to tag along on Sunday, if possible.
  24. I checked and realized that for January 2005, I found more caches at night (57) than during the day (46). I imagine this also explains why I had an abysmal 75% success rate for the month. (I don't have a problem with being slotted into the desperate category.)
