Remembering the water up the nose has made the wonder-pup forget what he was doing so I have to finish up for him. It was a great hike. Me and Whistlestick really enjoyed the new area. The actual hiding spot was very picturesque. We took DEAD IN THE WATER paperback and left some doggy treats, box of crayons, and a georged dollar bill. Thanks much SteveL. We loved your cache. --- yrium ---
  2. Dang, those things probably aren't legal in California. Yeah, sometimes I'm worried that somebody's going to break into my car when I leave it in an empty parking lot and go off on a hunt. Other times, I get back to my car only to realize I was so busy getting my geojunk together that I forgot to lock it.

  4. I'm pretty sure that this cache (Go France Go!) was placed about 18km away from the given coordinates (a typo in the coordinates). I'm still puzzled as to how it has a happy face in the logs, though.
  5. I guess I don't have any absolute necessities. I've even found a cache once when I forgot to bring my GPSr. I do like to have my logbook stamp and signature item, but sometimes I forget those too. Now that I can download coordinates to my GPSr, I don't even bother printing out the cache sheet or maps. Not that any of you should copy what I do. I have poison oak rashes all over my body right now for a reason.
  6. I guess it would at least be useful to know if the last email sent to the user bounced. Theoretically it would be possible for geocaching.com to track such stuff.

  8. Actually, I don't think I have a problem with a cache-owner being able to specify that a user be logged into the site in order to view cache details.
  9. I don't know of any easy way to search for them. Here are the ones I know about. There are probably some others. GC209A GC402B GC402C GC404A GC404B (might be archived already) GC406A GC406B GC4072 GC4074 GC40C5
  10. My favorite is from the San Francisco Bernal Hill cache, which is located on the side of a steep hill with strong, gusty winds, but was rated at 1.5 terrain at the time (it's since been increased). quote:Team CacheCows of Wisconsin - OK, I am a CacheCow not a mountain goat.

  12. I guess this is one of the topics that got messed up during the import. Anyway, another idea for this thread: kablooey
  13. quote:Originally asked by Choberiba:...I count four of them so far. Do they look special to those of you who have signed up already?... Where did you find them Kablooey? I didn't see a search function with this option. Sorry, Cho, this is a nonmembers-only feature . Lowlife scum nonsupporters like me get a special page for certain caches. Strangely, they seem to come in pairs. The three users of this feature so far have all placed two each.

  15. Hmm, the Post Reply button seems to be broken, but now the "quote" button works. quote:King Pellinore asked:Is there a way to address those concerns in a decentralized situation? I think it would be a fair amount of work to develop a good decentralized application, but for the sake of argument... What would happen if a cache is placed in an inappropriate location and needs to be removed? I suppose the validity of a cache could be voted on by the community, and you could set your application to restrict display of caches above a certain threshold. (You can begin to see the difference here between decentralized vs. centralized thinking.) What happens if you turn off your machine? Likely, your information has been copied to other machines that are still on. What happens when someone abandons their cache? Again, it would be the responsibility of the community, and a good application would have to provide for a method of allowing the community to make that determination. Who decides when the cache is missing when the owner is no longer reachable? The people decide. Once again, is this better than having a benevolent ruler decide? My feeling is no. But, can you be sure that you'll always have a benevolent ruler? Some history student could probably research an answer here as well. The harder questions to answer are the ones posed by TeamWSMF. It would be a mistake to try to design a decentralized application based on the functionality of the current centralized system. You would have to give up certain features, such as knowing with 100% certainty what the fifteen most recently placed caches are. However, is such information really necessary for the geocaching experience? It depends on whether you've come to rely on it.
  16. I agree with travisl, just log your finds separately. Creating a new account isn't worth saving the minimal database space. Plus, we wouldn't get to read such classic log entries as: quote:Ah, I've finally bagged the elusive first post for a brand new cache! Bill and I found the cache at 3:15 pm PST but I saw the cache just before Bill did.
  17. Well, this may not have been one of his original points, but I'm going to throw it out for argument anyway. Okay, there are now four members-only caches. The majority has been arguing that "traditional geocaching" is not changed. Without knowing the full details of all four caches, I'm pretty sure that at least two of them would have been placed anyway, had there been no such thing as members-only caches. That seems to indicate that there are now at least two fewer caches available to the freeloading public (of which I'm a not particularly proud member as of now) than there would have been otherwise. Something has changed, better or worse.
  18. I count four of them so far. Do they look special to those of you who have signed up already?
  19. quote:Jeremy wrote:$3/month. 3 meals of Ramen. Hmm, I'm not sure where you're buying your Ramen. It's 12/$1 here, unless you wait for it to go on sale at 15/$1. That aside, thanks for your explanation on the Subscriber caches.
