  1. Amy Check the NG website for updates. They have some there for these programs. Also if that doesn't work. Try uninstalling the program and reinstalling as you might have corrupted something. It should work one way or the other... Some of the older programs will work only with a serial cable. The newer one "State Series" works with USB with the update. I haven't had any luck with an adapter myself. I tried it once. Maybe if I had bought the Garmin one. But for the price you can get the new State Series with usb and other new improvements.
  2. I'd like to know if the 60CSX uses the static navigation as well. I read that one way it effects us is that if you stop then go slowly it won't show you moving for a time. I would assume you would notice delays in the compass arrow, etc. as well when you stop and go alot in your using the gpsr. They do that I guess so it keeps it jumping all over the place as the chipset is sensitive
  3. I wonder also if the gpsr hasn't been used for a while it needs the time to build the ephemeris data, etc. to current to be able to give a fix? Even if it shows solid bars?
  4. The CSX will give more accurate altitude and a vertical trip computer. Were as the CX doesn't have the vertical data. i.e. profile, total gain, total descent, etc. The compass is nothing special of course cause you can by one for a few bucks but the all the other stuff makes it worth an extra 50. Also If you go to sell it you will get more as it's a csx. Compare the manuals for the two units at Garmin. You will see all the additional vertical data offered.
  5. I think it's high and it's an outdated program. I have had it for years. Make sure your GPS accepts maps. Some one here might be able to answer that. Also Garmin.com will tell you if it accepts maps. You should be able to find the newer City Navigator versions out now for a bit more. Or even CitySelect would be newer. Also there are guys with used one's that will sell them on ebay I might think or here in Groundspeak that would be good. If you can't auto route with the gps but the latest info with address,POI,etc. would be usable. You have a choice to load the maps with route calulation or not so you can save space with CN or CS. Topo is ok if your off road alot. But it doesn't have good road info. Most have both programs which can be loaded into the unit at once. Both Metroguide and Topo don't need Unlocking so it can be used in as many GPS's ,PC's as you have. When you do get something go to Garmin.com and update Mapsource and gps with the latest updates which are free.
  6. It seems to be doing much better today. I'm wondering if I got a unit that had been returned to the retailer and someone might have been messing with the settings before I got it? A question: if I do DL 2.7, do you think it will reload 2.8 if I do another reset? If that were the case, I'd DL 2.7 now and get it over with! I wouldn't go to 2.7 as you won't get the 2.8 back. Being a new unit it may take time to build the data in the gps to get it to more steady, accurate. I'd get it into a clearing and let it run for a few hours with WAAS on, also with AUTO CAL for the barometer on too. I think you'll find it will work a lot better. If it doesn't do a Master Reset then turn it on only in a spot with a clear view of the sky again. That should build the almanac etc. better. I don't know how your running this unit but alot of people think you can run it inside, etc. and it works fine which is wrong. It takes time to build the data the gps needs from the birds and only with a clear view of the sky can you get the fastest, most steady and accurate readings.. Good Luck.
  7. I had two of them and the antenna made all the difference in the world. Get the right angle one MCX of course. Gilsson is a good one if not the best. I belive his Ebay site is cheaper...GPSGEEK.com his regular site.
  8. I have the newest software and updates. I only have v8 in the gps. But the routes were created in v6 so maybe that's a factor. What I've done but haven't tried yet is to put the routes into v8 in Mapsource and recalcutate them. Then save the file. I remember reading something about this here in Groundspeak awhile back. I will load them into the gps and try it. I found it did put me on other roads that weren't preferable. Maybe I'll do a reset too just to make sure all settings are at default. Capt.
  9. I have an SP2610 in my truck and upgraded CN 6 to CN8 and my routes that worked fine in CN6 have an error message coming up when I go to activate it. I didn't use CN7 because of the rumors around on it. Also I tried it and had some problems so I droped it and went back to CN6 . I did load it into Mapsource though. The error gives you two choices. One is to recalulate and the other to use it anyway..It mentions the maps are different and it may not follow the roads precisely. Any tips to overcome this?
  10. Thanks guys I was looking on ebay for a used one since hardware is the same and was surprised to find only one used one. All the rest are new. And the prices aren't that great either compared to GPSCity, etc. Lot's of guys are bidding on new ones and paying the same as if they just order it from authorized venders. Even the used one will go for near new. I might have to buy a new one. Capt. The Garmin $50 rebate also does not work with online auctions, clearly states that on the form, only from retailers. I know and I emailed them and they said they send a reciept saying bought from store. I wouldn't chance it for sure. Amazing how high priced some of them are... out of touch I guess.

  12. Red what makes you say they still have altitude problems? What are they that you have. What does it do? Capt.
  13. Are there any problems left with the 60cx or has Garmin got it running as smooth as the 60CS ? There were some big one's. Altitude jumping I belive,no refix after coming out of a tunnel, etc. WAAS problems? Did they change the SIRF processer in the later units to fix these problems? I'm leary about buying from a non authorized dealer as they may have the older processers. Thanks guys Capt.
  14. Anyone heard if they're going to have an update for $75.00 or so for us who have the V.6. and V.7 already? And when it might be coming out? I can't seem to find any at Garmins now. Capt.
  15. 35 was coming in for me last night. 47 was in and out, kinda flaky. I had to be outside to get either of them. I don't know the exact details with WAAS. If you search Google you'll find some info. Lot's of it as it's affected everyone on the ground. But I do know the new one's will be much better as they'll be higher in the sky above us in the NE anyway. They're moving one out west and the new ones that went up are testing. I think they're suppose to give corrections during testing but I'm not sure. I'm just waiting til fall to make judgements.
  16. There in test mode. They won't be up and running until the fall.
  17. I've had trouble doing it that way. It would not recognize the East CD,etc. How do you put in the other two CD's? East,Al. and HI?
  18. Sorry I just figured out how to fix it. I went to systems device manager and uninstalled gps then reinstalled it. The drivers took. PC quirks....Ha. Love em..
  19. The energizers found at WalMart are good. They are 2500's and are rated excellent. I've been using them for a year or so and no problems. I do have a charger that offers slow or fast and I always use slow. I bought it at the store that sponsers the battery test. See here Battery Test's
  20. Interesting. I have an on going debate with a fellow that says if you have the gps up high or with a clear view and plug the antenna in you won't get any better results. The 60cx etc. is supposed to have such good reception I wonder still if it will do better with these Gilssons with a high gain antenna. Both with a clear view. Can one of you guys do the experiment for me? Bring both out to open and have side by side and plug in the antenna then unplug it to see if the X does better still? Capt.
  21. I had two 76S's for a couple of years.Similar to the 76 except it has an altimeter and compass. It does give a vertical trip computer were the non S's don't. They are good units. With my Gilsson external antenna I recorded some great hikes with accuracy and still use them in the 60cs when I go back during times of uncertin weather conditions. The only thing I didn't like about them was the screen wasn't easy to read in dim light or night compared to other units I've had. So I traded up to a 60CS which has the color screen with a better back light, processor, and some other features. The difference in being able to see the track with the 60 series is awesome. I think $200.00 is way too much for that unit. You could buy a brand new 60C (non color) for $ 244.00 at GPSCITY.COM. I just sold my last 76S in mint condition for $175.00 on ebay. Check there for a better deal. GPSCITY has some of the best prices I"ve seen. I always end up buying from them. They are a authorized Garmin dealer.
  22. I always found Garmin excellent in their support. Something like this alitude jumping they'll take seriously and fix right away. I would think it takes time as when you change something it will effect something else. They get lot's of suggestions or false reports and have to sort through thoursands of them to figure out whats real and not I guess. One thing I wanted badly and had to wait years for was a highlighted track. When the 76S came out it was a great unit expect I found it hard to read the track compared to the units that Garmin had out before. It wasn't until the 60cs came out for a while even that they had an udate with the menu for "transparent"etc. Transparent being like the stock 76S was or 60cs when that first hit the market. When they did it they did it right. i.e. color options and a thick highlight. Hopefully they'll do it right with this unit as well and not take long. They have everything staked on it. Since they stopped productiton of the 60CS. Which is a great unit. That unit looks better and does a lot more than the Northstar 951XD I bought in 1996 for $1600.00 Which I still have on the boat. Garmins service was even better all around then Northstars which is darn good. $ over 100.00 an hour. I myself deeply believe as they have everything staked on the X they get it running smooth soon.
  23. They may be trying to send you a message: the altimeter in the 60csx is crap anyways, and you're better off with the cx that gives you accurate GPS measurements The barometric altimeter on my 60CSx worked for a total of 12 days. During that short time, I compared barometric elevations versus satellite-derived elevations. The barometric and satellite-derived elevations were both higher than my actual elevation at sea level. However, the barometric elevations were only somewhat higher, whereas the satellite-derived elevations were a good deal higher. The 60CSx has both a barometer and an electronic compass. I paid $50 more for these features. I'll let you know if the barometric altimeter works for more 12 days on my new 60CSx, if and when I get a proper "replacement." From all I've read the accuracy is better with the altimeter S units. But the best accuracy is when it's been running for an hour or so. To keep a steady fix for a while is key. And you have to be in "Varible Elevation".
  24. I always considered the main point of the antenna was that it is high on your pack so better sky view and I guess that still applies to the 60CSx to some extent. Yes but if you tip the csx it will lose reception. If I get time I'll use the 60cs I have and tip the external antenna and tip the gps the same to see if they lose the same amount. Although the 60csx is or can be a different kind of beast.
  25. Well I always used an antenna with my 60CS so I've just continued the same with the 60CSx. It definitely does NOT make it worse and I think it still makes it a little better, but the difference is not as noticeable as the CS. It so hard to judge things like that objectively as even if you do the same walk again the satellites might be quite different. I must admit I'd love to ditch the antenna as the wire is a nuisance tangling in bushes. I'm also experimenting with battery saver mode as this extends the battery life back to CS levels. So far it seems to be just as good using battery saver even under trees but again its hard to be objective. With or without an antenna the 60CSx is way better than the 60CS with an antenna. Maybe it makes it better in that the external is less sensitive to tilting effects? In other words by not holding the CSX true vertical you lose some reception. But the external has a broader field. I read somewhere years ago where they pick up sat's lower on the horizon compared to OEM antennas. But that may be for certain gps's and not really true about 60CSX's.
