  1. Hi What price range are you looking for? I need to replace my GPSr was my "waterproof" Sportstrak turned out to be not so "waterproof". I was considering a new Venture but i would consider a used unit if there were no problems with the unit. I'd could offer you $140 + $6 shipping?
  2. Sorry for a “me too” post but I’ve been using this application for a couple of weeks and it is really good. I think I heard you mention that you might integrate CMConvert . . . that would be very cool. You have a killer app here!
  3. Sounds like we need a Consitutional amendment!
  4. me - 37, better half - 37, son -6, other son -6 (yes twins), dog - 1. rounded to youngest year []
  5. I was thinking about placing a theme cache that is based on music. The idea would be that people would trade CDs or CD-Rs of songs – the objective would be to (1) introduce people to different types of music that they normally wouldn’t find, and (2) get to know fellow cachers by their musical tastes. My questions for you experienced cachers are: 1) is this something that anyone else but me would find interesting?, and, maybe more importantly, 2) could this be perceived as illegal music swapping? (I don’t want geo-caching to get a bad name or lawsuit) TIA - gaz
  6. I’m running DirectRoute on a STP. I was testing it out on my drive to work this morning but I found it difficult to distinguish between the dark lines of the route and the dark lines of major roads. Anyone have any tips?
  7. I played around with it over the weekend both on the drive to a cache and on the actual hunt. It worked pretty well and the maps were very detailed, even for back streets (e.g. "hey honey, expect a slight curve to the left in approx 150 ft"). When driving through heavy tree coverage i felt a bit stranded but the unti quickly picks up again. My only complaint was that the backlight comes on with the alarm. As it was daylight, the only was i noticed was a slight buzz and the quickly falling battery levels.
  8. Fry's (in San Jose, CA area) is advertising a $299.99 Sportrak Color in today's newspaper. It seems like a very good price so i thought i'd pass on the info for anyone out there shopping.
  9. What is the date code? you will find the D/C inside the battery compartment. the code is 3302. i've been very happy with the unit - so much so that i'm upgrading to the STP (refurb @ cost ~same as STM) .
  10. wow - thanks for the tip! I'd recently purchased a STM and was wondering if i should have gone for the extra memory & maps. I just ordered the discounted STP (although shipping was $17 - it is still a great deal). I'll return the STM as it's still covered under the 30-day satisfaction.
  11. I have a Magellen & friends that use Garmin. It seems like Magellen gets & holds on to better coverage in areas with a lot of trees. Due to the location in which i live this was a deal maker for me. I've only owned the STM for a few weeks but i'm very pleased with it. My only wish was that i had enough budget to upgrade to the STP or STC.
  12. i'm not sure if it's a strict rule but it does say you have to purchase the "GPS handheld receiver and MapSend software title together" at a store. I don't know if buying software later would be applicable?
  13. Hi. I was in the same situation. I’d just brought a STM and had to justify the cost vs. benefits to my budget advisor (wife) – there was no way that a $80-100 spend on map software was going to be approved. I did some research & asking around and discovered that Mapsends Streets for Map 330 would work on the STM. I found it for $6 on eBay (plus $15 s/h ). It works well for loading fairly decent maps on the GPSr. The software doesn’t do much else (won’t even let you print maps) but the maps on the device appear fairly accurate and work for what I was looking for. I loaded most of the SF Bay Area (San Fran down to Monterey) and it used up about 60% of my memory. I did a quick search on eBay and didn’t see any for sale – although the updated Streets version is there for $25-30. Hope this helps.
  14. thanks for all the advice - i purchased a Sportrak Map and we're planning a quickie hunt this evening (work & weather permitting) i played around last night but there are still many buttons and screens to learn. i was also hoping the maps would be more detailed but i guess that's $$$ for mapsend. thanks
  15. Hi, I’m interested in getting into Geocaching (I haven’t tried it yet but I have a few friends that are in to it and it sounds great) so I’m shopping for a GPS handheld. I would like some advice from the “experts”. How important is mapping capability? It seems the entry level units (etrex yellow, Geko) don’t offer maps but are they needed? After a little shopping around I found what seems like a fairly decent deal on Amazon for the Magellan Sportak $119 (AR) and the Sportrak Map $147 (AR). Does anyone have any advice on either of these units? And any input on if the extra $28 is worth it for the “map”? TIA - gareth
