  1. Thanks for your replies, everyone. I see things I agree with in many of the responses. I realize that there was a chance someone might see this kind of cache as promoting an agenda, which is why I asked. However, there are some thoughts I had that made me unsure where exactly to draw the line. I would never put a cache out that encouraged people to send money to any particular cause. What I had in mind was something with facts about a topic. It is a topic I happen to know quite a bit about, so I thought I could make a good puzzle about it. As far as avoiding reminders of diseases, I guess I would ask why we have United for Diabetes geocoins if that is a problem? Since it would be a puzzle cache with an autism theme, it would not be a surprise to anyone simply arriving at the cache from a pocket query. A person would have to choose to read what the cache was about and solve the puzzle. I also would not lump religious tracts in the same category with facts about a disability. Thanks for the thoughtful replies, cjs_team
  2. We want to hide our fourth cache. The other three were very easy and straightforward. We are ready for something more challenging. We want to make a puzzle cache, and were wondering if it would be ok to do an Autism Awareness theme. We have done puzzles that require you to look up info on a particular cartoon, dental charts, or sports trivia. Would a puzzle cache that required folks to look up factual information on autism be equally acceptable? Thanks for your advice! cjs_team
  3. We want to get ourselves a handheld GPSr for Christmas. We saw a few ones that are going to be on sale tomorrow. Right now we have a Garmin Nuvi that is great for driving us to the cache location, but we need something more rugged for when we step out of the vehicle. Anybody else shopping for new toys tomorrow? Thanks, Chris
  4. I'm so glad you started this thread! I was just going to ask the same thing. Like a couple of other people have said, it's fun to see little trinkets, even in film canisters. Sometimes I find things I like even better than what I see in an ammo can. If we find a film canister with only a log in it, we usually add a few items so the next person has something to look at or trade for. We have a special box for our micro swag. It's one of those plastic boxes that snap shut with all the different little compartments. This one was meant for beads, but I have also seen versions made for fishing lures. Here's what we currently have on hand for micro swag: a bee button, which has an attached ribbon with our initials and tftc (our signature item) glass beads with gold painted spirals sun and moon glass beads smiley face erasers big confetti pieces shaped like spirals Other things we have seen and liked: Monopoly houses glass pieces pins signature items of any kind smashed pennies tiny racecars That's what comes to mind right now- I will try to think of some more. Meanwhile, I will be checking this thread frequently. I love to hear everyone's great ideas, and if you happen to have pictures, even better! Thanks! Chris
  5. We are a bit formal with ours. We call her Ms. Garmin
  6. Wow, thanks for all the great input! I see a lot of good ideas here. I knew not to hide on the playground equipment, so that's why I was looking for another spot. I like the rock idea, But I do not have the tools or skill to do something like that. I will have to see if I can find someone who does. I suppose it is possible that the parks may not allow geocaches, but I would guess it is more likely that most of the caches are near the highway since it is a frequently traveled road. I'll check into it. The ideas for micro hides would probably work- I have seen all of these before in my area. I was just hoping to do something a bit bigger. I will keep it all in mind, though. Please feel free to keep the ideas coming, and a big thanks to all of you who replied Chris
  7. There are several parks in my area that do not have caches hidden in them yet. I visited several today, and they are all great locations, but I don't see a lot of hiding places for a small cache. I'm not a big fan of the nanos. I might consider a film canister if it were unique in some way. Ideally, I'd like to hide a small lock n lock or something similar. The parks all have large grassy areas, a play structure, and large trees. There aren't really many bushes or things like that to hide containers under. What kinds of hides have you seen in places like this? Thanks for your suggestions! Chris
  8. I would love to have something with bumblebees and our initials: C J S Any ideas? Thanks! Chris
  9. Load the other caches in your gps. Go out to where you want to place and do a GOTO on the other caches. The distance will be displayed. Load the other caches in Mapsource. Draw a 528 ft. proximity circle around the caches. Does the place you want your caches show up inside the proximity circle? There you go, two ways. Jim Wow, thanks! Unfortunately, I don't know how to do either of those things. The Mapsource idea looks like it would work best for me. Where can I find more information on how to do this? Thanks again
  10. I have a couple of places I would like to put caches, but they are fairly close to other existing caches. Looking at a map, they appear far enough a part, but I can't be sure. I know there is a specific distance that caches have to be apart, but I can't figure out how to calculate this distance. I'm sure there is some simple/obvious way to do this, but I haven't figured it out yet. Any tips? Thanks!
