  1. Talking about steep slopes, has anyone done dips near winchester. The terrain in this area is very flat, except for this one which is in an old railway cutting, and the climb to it is about 1 in 1/2!!!!!
  2. Dont know your location, but Oxford looks excellent, and several of the caches are by Simply Paul and hsi always seem to be interesting.
  3. I reckon he must spend as much time entering his logs on the computer as I do finding caches. Well done mate and glad I could help Steve
  4. I went to a cache called decaying hospital the return the other day and the FTF prize was a lottery ticket (scratchcard) it didnt win though, but if it had I would certainly have split the winnings with the cache placers anything else wouldnt have been fair
  5. I went to venice for a day last year and the GPS reception is terrible. I wasnt geocaching, just exploring with my son but we had the GPS switched on (emap) and the track log at the end of the day was very intermittent
  6. On 29th February 2004 I was caching with my children at Buckleberry common near Newbury, when as we were looking for the box having reached the general location we were suddenly disturbed by about 6 geocachers who were in a competiition. Well my eldest son (stobbo) found the box and was suddenly covered with all the others who literally threw things in the box and stamped the logbook in what took about ten seconds. I was new to the hobby at the time and found the whole episode very funny. I only remembered the name of one of the people as 'Paul Blitz' who I have met since. I keep meaning to go on one of these events but have not managed it yet.
  7. what did happen to you in london last month paul
  8. How about the geographical centre of wales ..............only joking, that is about the remotest cache I have ever been to not a soul within 5 miles!! saxon church which is near you is excellent and a real surprise, Down under friend remembered very thought provoking, my own cache no more bacon butties, a real cache and dash, and if you fancy coming down my way a bit, luminous motion and a sign of the times in winchester.
  9. I have set up my pocket queries so that I download 15 over friday saturdau and sunday which gives me the whole country divided into segments. I then download them into GSAK on Sunday evening, and do a filter on there using the polygon filter to divide the country into three zones to make the GPX files a little smaller. These I store on a 32Mb compact flash card which I use in the jacket of my PPC described above. I think I am fully paperless now so I hope this helps Steve
  10. mine has been up for over a month and nobody has been able to do it!!! Ought to put a twenty pound note in it and see how many are financially driven!!
  11. What an excellent story, must try and do that one soon.
  12. I have a Ipaq 5550, which has the bluetooth, so I can even use it with my bluetooth GPS and not take my etrex out of my pocket. I also have GPX sonar installed (recently) and an ebook reader, and use memory map to provide me with the OS maps. I consider this to be a true paperless solution. I have had to buty a couple of memory cards, but these are very cheap at the mo ( £30 for a 512). I have tom tom navigator which I use as I drive (which I do as a living) so if a cache appears by the side of the road I can stop and do it. Then I have a little app called ROT13 decode, which decodes the clues quickly rather than by hand if I am using papaer sheets as I sometimes do. The 5550 is a fairly expensive Ipaq, and is not really required as a slightly cheaper model would do. At the end of the day the choice is yours, but I personally would try and avoid palm powered devices as the software tends to be a little less available. I have just seen a PPC called the mitac mio 168 which comes with an integrated GPS, but I have no idea how good this one is. Pocketgpsworld have recently done a review of this one which retails at about £220 so this seems like a real bargain on the face of it.
  13. And if it was a winning ticket and it had'nt yet been recovered by the FTF you wouldnt be tempted to return to your cache and recover said ticket would you, as that would be very unsporting
  14. I took my etrex back to Garmin, which although under warranty I had no receipt. Irt had a crack in the case and the display was intermittent. Although I do not remember dropping it I could not be 100% sure. 5 minutes later the guy came out of the workshop after testing it and handed me a brand new unit with a guarantee letter. NOW THAT IS SERVICE Thanks Garmin
  15. I would also like to sign up (24-5-65) unfortunately I thought I already had via another link so I home my PASS counts!!! after all if you read the post you will see I travel several hundred miles to get this one.
