  1. I say archive the current cache, and just create a new one once you place it elsewhere. I was wondering how long it would last over there now that they have started all the construction. Looking forward to finding it again in its new home, wherever that winds up being.

  3. I like the idea of having the weather on the cache page. Here's the catch... is Jeremy cool with this? Not sure how this could affect things for their network. I know that the traffic is minimal, but what is happening is that every time one of those weather links gets updated or clicked on, it has to communicate with other places on the net. So esentially, geocaching.com is hosting that on the cache page. If Jeremy is cool with it, I say go for it, but lets try to remember that its his network. Just my 2 cents
  4. Personally it turns me off. I'm not the cache police or anything, but I am against this type of things. I am a firm believer in the "leave no trace" philosophy. I have hiked all over this country, west coast, pacific norwest, rockies, adirondacks, cascades, the appalacian trail....I could go on and on...in all those miles I can say the I honestly believe that my use of those trails was completely undetectable when I was done. This cache is just what we dont need...a questionable monstrosity that will draw the wrong kind of attention to what we do.
  5. Well, Not sure if he has the most, but he has a a few, and I have found them all. I am of course talking about you King Pellinore. I can say that two of his caches challenged me more than any others to date. A good variety of themes and locations. Give yourself a pat on the back, I have taught you well.

It seems everything nowadays is about sex. Sex sells, and I was surprised this wasn't the case. Pleasantly surprised. No one here is trying to "sell" geocaching. We enjoy it fine the way it is. Please keep your sex to yourself, thanks.

  8. Well, I dont know them personally, and I havent exchanged emails with them, but all the caches I go to around here have their signature items. They also frequently post pics of cache hunts that I can verify are the places. As tough as it is for me to believe, I have to guess that they are for real. How they log so many finds in such a short time is beyond me...it must be nice to not have to work!
  9. Voted #3 - I'm in it for the outdoors and the hiking mostly. I hunted all the local caches because, well, I do love finding these things, but as for how many I find...couldnt care less. I would think for the 400+ find cachers, they must absolutely love doing this. Even if you were strictly in this for the numbers, after 600 caches found, the thrill of simply having the best stats has got to have worn off. I think at the end of the day most of us do this for the enjoyment, and the stats are just a secondary characteristic.

  11. I have been contemplating a light for my night searches. I am leaning toward the army surplus 90 degree angle light with red and blue lenses. I dont want white light as it attracts too much attention when I want to be as stealth as possible. I may look into the LED variety now that I have seen some opinions of it though. Thanks
  12. Anyone else notice? When you login into the main site you have an option to log into the forums at the same time...and it works like a charm! Thanks Jeremy...it was starting drive me nuts!
  13. Does a former coworker count? I used to work with King Pellinore. We continued to hang out long after I left my last place of employment. I took him along on a cache that I knew he would enjoy and he was hooked. Now he has more finds and hides than me!
  14. Only in this situation once, and the reverse to boot...was doing cache maintenance on one of my caches and had my girlfriend along for the hike. She wanted to try and find it, so I gave her my gps and told her to go ahead and find it for me. I had to sit there and try not to give it away.
  15. Easiest way to do it that I know of...when you reply, click the "url" tab under instant UBBCode.....enter the link for your cache page and click ok....then enter a name (how you want it to appear) and click ok...thats it. Example: I click "URL" Enter: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=8249 Then click "ok" Then call it "Try this next time your in NJ" Then click "OK" again. Done Try this next time your in NJ
  16. ...you had to make a seperate folder on your hard drive for geocaching documents, and then a folder for geocaching internet links. And of course you just love your 21" monitor so you can have the chat room open, the forums open, and the main page open...so you can respond to threads, chat in realtime, and search for your next cache hunt at the same time. And you do this at 3AM.

  18. Depends. As Mopar said, consider your audience, or in this case, the hunter. If its clearly an easy find, stick with kids toys, enough to fill it up. For a trecherous hike in the mountains to claim a 5/5, stick with WG dollars. You really only need enough stuff to satisfy one finder. That finder should leave something for the next, and so on.

  20. Email Jeremy and have the cache deleted. Itso one thing to not know the rules and make a mistake. Its clearly another to know they are breaking the law, and making us all accomplices in the process. This is blatent disregard for the rules. If these are virtual caches (which they dont sound like) that is fine. If they are physical caches, they should be removed and delted from this website. Period end of sentence!
  21. Yet another argument for my position that urban caches are more trouble than they are worth. This seems like a case where if the cache container was hidden miles out into the forest, the only person that would ever even know about it would be a geocacher. No one would accidentally wander about it, nor would anyone be watching a geocacher open it up and then re-hide it. This has been my problem lately with a lot of caches that in my opinion are just way too close to high traffic areas. I really dont enjoy geocaching when I know other people are watching me, it's just plain suspicous. This container type would never be a problem if it was hidden out in the middle of nowhere. If an urban cache is someone only option, go micro or virtual. I can just see it now, some idiot is going to stash an ammo can in a city, someone watching will freak out, and the only thing that explodes is geocaching, on the 5 o'clock news. Not exactly the kinda press we need. The point....the container is fine as long as its clearly marked and well hidden....but putting something like that in an open area with onlookers..thats just inviting a problem.
  22. Two thoughts here: One I plan to do at some point (but feel free to borrow the idea), is to put a cache behind a waterfall. Locate any waterfall. Typically there will be either a rock wall behind it, or a boulder field under it. Either way, there are tons of rock formations that a cache could be tucked into. The running water will camoflague it pretty well. Just make sure it isnt a big fall. Too much water makes it dangerous. Second, the physics involved with submerging a cache container make underwater caches a challenge. I big ammo can will not easily be submerged as it displaces too much volume. A quick solution is to fill the can with a dense material (I would use lead fishing sinker in a ziplock bag). Use enough ballast to get the container to suspend in the water. Before placing the can, primer and fully paint to help avoid rusting. If you can get it "rhino-lined" that would be even better. (complete coated in rubber) Attach it to an immovable object underwater with a nylon rope (wont rust or decay) If you want the finder to open the cache above the surface, allow for enough rope. You could probably coil up the slack and use a velcro cable tie to keep it in place. Good luck!
  23. While I havent used the other geocaching sites yet, I sertainly dont think that their is anything wrong with seeking/posting a cache there. I see it as my using hotbot.com to find something...and if the results arent what I am looking for..I check out google.com. It isnt being disloyal, you are just using the available equipment. I say go for it.
  24. Pretty much every time. Once I lock down the immediate area GPS goes back in my pack and I begin my search of the area. As I have posted in other threads, my Etrex seems useless once I am within about 50-75 feet of a cache, so once I hit the general area, I use the force. There is no try....Do.......or do not.
