  1. There is a lot of talk about the right and wrong of bootlegged material. I say, he who is without sin cast the first stone. I am not a saint, I have used copied software. I admit it...lock me up and throw away the key. Personally, I wouldnt make copies, I wouldnt distribute copies, and I certainly would never make a profit from copies. That being said, I also dont plan on calling the FBI the next time I come across a CD the someone burnt, in a cache. My advice, if it bothers you, dont take it...if it bothers you so much that you have to react, take it and destroy it. The log might sound something like this..... Found it! Took the opportunity to right a wrong, left application for copyrights and patents (photocopied of course)
  2. Looks like this has been taken care of. Thanks to the folks who stepped up to replace the cache! If not for the recent action taken, I would have suggested archiving it, but now I guess that is a moot point.
  3. I had this saved from last year. I loved this pic. Take a close look and picture the silloute of Alaska...then think about how big it is in comparrison the the entire straight 48. We always hear about how big Alaska is, but until you see it in scale, it doesnt set in just how huge it really is.

  5. I have always loved the outdoors. I was raised to respect the land, and everything that we have because of it. I can't imagine not caring about the environment, although sadly, I know I am in the minority on this. I am glad to see that someone could go out into the woods and see them for what they are. If everyone could just go out into some desolate, rural area, and enjoy the silence for an afternoon, I am certain more people would be on our side. Thanks for seeing the light, and for sharing your experience. Hopefully you will make the opportunity to replace the goods in those first few caches you visited.
  6. It's amazing how much less a hike FEELS like a hike when you are focused on a GPSR! Several miles and a few thousand feet in elevation changes rarely bother me anymore because I have a destination. I forget about the effort and concentrate more on making the numbers on my Etrex screen go down. It's great. I have eaily dropped an inch on my belt since winter...with a steady diet of good caches. Best part...it's free! (unlike my gym membership)

  8. Are you able to program waypoints into this device, or does it just track your position relative to a start and stop point? This would be awesome if we can program it like a regular GPSR. The thing the bothers me the most is carrying my bright yellow etrex out in front of me when I'm hiking....it is too obvious. One could be pretty stealth with this thing!
  9. Art, I remember when we discussed how to do this in the forums, when you were looking for ideas about the plaque. I am totally impressed. This is without a doubt the best work done by any of our local guys. I only wish you hid it near us....it would be worth the SCUBA lessons to get it! Congrats again...awesome work! I will be keeping an eye on this one to see who finds it. macro

  11. Wouldn't that technically be letterboxing? I dont remember Morgan Freeman wielding an Etrex!
  12. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot: With apologies to macro and his team, but caches like this definitely cause people not to seek caches placed by owners with little "visible" experience. I agree with you on this. One of the problems we had before you found it was that people assume that we were newbies since we had no "finds". I think that puts people off unless there are many complimentary logs on the page. Of course we have many finds, we ust log them individually, and not to the Team_Epitome account. We reserve that account for compilation efforts that tend to be harder. As Team_Macroscopic, I have only placed one, relatively easy cache so far (although I am planning a few more for this summer). Also, I agree that it is up to the cache placer to keep people from tearing up the environment. We try to make it clear what is, and what is NOT required to find the cache. I often gripe about micros placed in wooded areas with no clues...its an invite to rip the place apart. The real key I have learned, is to place a quality cache. If you build it, they will come. If you build it well, people will talk about it. Hopefully that is what we've done.

  14. Meaning that I would hope other hunters are capable of the same. There are far fewer "hunting" accidents than there are shootings "reported" as hunting accidents...if you catch my drift. I think most hunters know what they are aiming at.

  16. Just wondering if this happens to others. I helped place a cache last year that is a pretty hard find. Most of the people that search for it never find it. In 6 months, only 3 people ever did, and two of them were this week. At first (before BassoonPilot proved them wrong) many began accusing us of faking it....that the cache never even existed. Even today, I know that some people have their doubts. This ever happen to you? Here is the cache I am referring to.... Yes, it really does exist! (you just can't find it)

  18. quote:Originally posted by Ridgerunner4: write each digit of the coordinates for a second cache on a rubik's cube, then scramble it up. I did one in NJ that requires solving a rubiks cube as part of the cache. I thought it was pretty original, but I see other folks are now talking about it. I wont go into details about how I incorporated it, if you are in the area, check out Team_Epitome's latest I want to do an all math puzzle, but it seems kinda exclusive...not sure if that idea will ever get off the ground.
  19. Born and raised in suburban hell, I tend to place caches out as far into the woods as NJ permits me to. I may not get as many visits as the easy, drive up caches, but I think people will enjoy getting away from it all when they seek mine. I rarely go after "urban" caches, rather I stick to ones that require a good hike and are as far away from towns as possible.

  21. There is a fine line between advertising and legitimate cache goods. Example...does anyone have a problem with me leaving a coupon for 25% off at EMS in a cache? Technically its advertising, although most cachers would take it readily. I think promoting your own business through geocaching is in poor taste, but leaving an item that bears a logo isnt neccesarily a problem. (providing that it isnt your logo) Curious here...how does the group feel about coupons for stores?

  23. I vote with the majority...blaze orange and use common sense. If you are downfield of an area where hunters may be aiming...LEAVE! If you are in the vicinity of lots of deer...LEAVE! If you hear gunshots and its loud enough to make you jerk, you are too close to the shooter...LEAVE! Other than that, anytime I have been in the field with a rifle in my hands, I can usually tell the difference between a trophy and a human...so i dont get overly concerned.
  24. 4 days is not a long time. I use a computer for a living...the last thing I think about when I get home at the end of the day is logging in to see if anyone needs a clue to find a cache i've hidden. I think that I get back in a reasonable amount of time, but I dont think 4 days is that big of a deal. After 2-3 weeks you have a legitimate gripe. As for un-maintained caches..report'm to Jeremy....we dont need geo-junk floating around the woods.
