  1. I have done it on my daughters account and I know a very prominent caching couple that split their account a few years ago.

No problems, it would be useful if you stated that you were re logging not that you have your own account so that people understand the old find date.

  2. I haven't been able to pull my thought together well enough to post after hearing the news. I must have tried to start a dozen times but never could get more then a sentence out.

Brian was one of the first cachers I ever met, it was at a WSGA event shortly after we both started caching in early 2005. I had the privilege to tag along with him and JCAR to find an old Kodiak4 cache called Vista.

I got to know Brian quite well and we usually ended up at the same events, after a bit we would hit the trail and grab caches together.

He was a fixture in the caching group that would get together for cache machines, usually bringing up the rear but always getting there, Joining us on hikes, I remember well a trip to Lord Hill for a major milestone of his.

Friendly, outgoing, generous, Brian was always there to help out.

Brian always had a smile for you and an intense sarcastic sense of humor that always had me smiling. He could make even the most mundane thing fun.

His health plagued him and like many noticed that lately he was in more pain than usual. I was very glad to sit down and talk to him at GW8 and now wish I had had longer to talk.

I knew he was in the hospital but was still shocked and stunned to hear of his passing. It sounds like he was much more ill that anyone knew. I am glad that he never knew the extent of his illness.

I am truly going to miss my talking to my friend. God speed Brian, rest well and in peace

  3. I got this pretty good shot of Andrew and I was looking at it today wondering, is that pack empty? It looks like you took it off the rack and wore it on the hike! Seriously, I think I'm toting too much stuff.

All his stuff must be in his pockets. Come to think of it, I didn't see him eat....hmmm?

Lets see, what is in my pack.

In the main pouch, Water Filter, first aid kit, food garbage(sandwich wrapper, 2 baggies, I ate at the terracache, 20 oz bottle of gatorade) Emergency foil poncho, whisperlight stove, titanium cup and enough fuel to boil some water, small paperback book.

Smaller outer pouch, knife, 3 sets of batteries, 2 geocoins, granola bar wrappers, paper map of area, small spiral notebook like you would find as the log book in a cache and pen for notes.

The pack itself is carries the water blatter which is 100 oz and is still half full.

In my pockets are my phone and keys, my camera is attached to the small camera bag on my waist strap and my gps hangs from my chest strap.

I usually run less then 20 pounds which classifies it as an ultralight. I also had a fleese in the car which I chose not to put in the pack due to the weather and not figuring I would need it due to it being unlikely that I would get lost or trapped up there with that many people.

    There you go.

  4. Can we get a headcount of just the peeps who will be meeting in the parking lot in Silverdale? I want to be able to hit the road as soon as everyone shows up.

I will be there I hope. This job shouldn't be going tomorrow but they seem to like making last minute descisions about the schedual.

Abby and Jeff has my number and I will post when I am positive one way or another.

Do we need any parking passes where we are going?

  5. So what day are we doing this? I got lost somewhere....

    July 17th

So that means this weekend is open. Is anyone interested in a Col Bob warm-up on Saturday or Sunday? Whichever, I'll have to camp at the trailhead. I'll bring the Baby-Q grill and stuff for breakfast in the morning.

Scratch that, Tubal Cain should be blooming by now. Any interest?

Are we talking day hike, an overnighter, Saturday, Sunday? What's the deal man, give us some details!

Dayhike, Saturday or Sunday, I don't care which. If you can get to Silverdale we can carpool to the trailhead. Well, unless the Jeep isn't luxurious enough for you, then we can take the Land Rover.

    Either day works for me.

    Do yo have leather seats?

Yes, but only the fronts have heat. I can carry three.

Ok Amy is fine with me going so I am in.

If Sunday and if I can get a pass from my wife, I would be interested. I will find out tonight.

  7. why would you want that?

You mean: why would I want to revert to the previous version? Because that was cleaner, easier to read and easier to copy. The present version serves no purpose*; is harder to read because the huge triangle, which itself serves no purpose, looks like part of the waypoint; and is harder to copy because a mouse over selects the whole page if done from the right (the natural direction).

Regardless of why I want to do it, my comment was for suggestions as to how.

    * I'm sure that the developer had a purpose in mind but whatever it is escapes me and as it's not even mentioned in the release notes I can't guess.

Clicking on the triangle brings up the url to the cache ie.. http://coord.info/GC24P0T pre highted and ready for cut n paste.

Maybe the developer is left handed it is most definitly not natural of me to mouse from the right.

  8. Your best bet would be to drive north and find a park-n-ride along I-5 then take Metro to the event. I hate driving in Seattle on a good day and finding parking around the event site will be tough.

I was thinking about taking Metro to the event but it appears that Metro doesn't run in the valley on the weekends, that or my Metro route finding skills really suck ( a definite possibility).

He is talking about the event in Seattle not Goewoodstock.

  9. Okay, I have a couple of questions related to this topic. Yes, I have read the entire thread, all four pages of it.

I'm reletively new (just reached 100 finds this weekend, Whoo!) and I want to be an honorable cacher, one who plays by the spirit, not just the letter of the law. Reading this thread makes me wonder if I've done a couple of things I shouldn't have. Let me ask the opinions of those here.

I don't think I'd participate in a "wait at the bottom of a hazardous climb and sign the lowered log" party. I perfectly understand why one *can* do such a thing, but to me it seems to fall within the spirit of the game that the climb itself was part of the challenge.

However, I did once find a cache that I couldn't reach, because I'm short. GC1Y2G0. For those who don't care to go read the log, it's a 2 / 2 micro in a tree, and I could touch it with my chubby little fingers while standing on my toes, but could not secure it to sign the log. I would NOT have logged a find under these circumstances. However, at my work-related event that day, I told co-workers about my plight, and one of them returned to the cache site with me and retrieved the cache. We both signed, and in fact, he created an account and logged the find online, too. I felt *great* about this triumph!

Now, I'm having second thoughts. Since I didn't actually retrieve the cache with my own two hands, do I deserve the find? And since my friend didn't actually locate the cache, does he deserve the find? (Of course, he's a real newbie, and no way would I ask him to delete his log--talk about a bad taste in one's mouth about caching!) If I had brought in a stepstool or something, would that have been okay?

Second circumstance. Most of the time, I cache with my husband. For most caches, I don't have a problem with both of use getting credit for the find, no matter which of us actually called out, "Found it!" because it was probably chance. But what about with harder finds? If we're both doing an intimate search of an inanimate object, hunting for that difficulty 4 micro...should only the one of us that actually finds it first get credit? Or should the one who finds it first discreetly step aside and let the other one hunt 'til he / she finds it, otherwise only one can log the find? That just seems...not right. We're in it together. But do the ethics change when it's a group of five? Ten?

What about if there's a slight (not extreme, like a dangerous climb into a tree) physical challenge? Just this weekend, at GC10E1J, a terrain 3, my sweetie was the one who stood on the edge of the steep slope and grabbed the cache. I *could have* done it, and I was the first to spot the cache, but he was gallant and did the hard bit for me. So...should we both get credit? Should he have put it back and had me scramble down there, too?

So far, I've let my conscience be my guide, and I've had no moral qualms about the above situations. But...am I wrong? Am I a dishonest cacher?

    What do you guys think?

    --Q

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Most geocachers would not have any problems with any of that.

So I have to ask then, what is your view on a cache like Little Known Park Finder 2 One of the few remaining traveling caches? I am honestly curious what the larger caching community thinks.

    edit for speeling

  10. Expect to pay $2 for an all-day pass for the ferry.
I think you meant the Trolly.
Carries people, runs along the water, must be a ferry, right? (Clearly, I didn't watch enough Mr. Rogers Neighborhood when I was a kid. Yeah, I meant trolley.)

    Problems ---

    #43, GC24DNQ - Missing since 5/12, disabled 6/1

    #44, GC24ETD - Archived

Thanks. I'd missed my  on the map, and accidentally kept GC24DNQ. And I just realized I'd forgotten to check caches archived between June 9 and 20. That'd be GC24ETD. Odd coincidence that they're so close to each other.

I'll let people know on Friday.

Also caught that I can't spell trolley correctly. This is going to be a fun one. :(

  11. NOTE: Times below are different than my first post on April 25. Below times are accurate.

The final route is up, at http://j.mp/acm_final (4 MB .pdf file)

There will be an informal dinner at 6:00 PM on Friday, June 25 at Golden Luck Chinese buffet, 159 West Bond Street, Astoria (46.1899, -123.8467). If there are any changes to the route after the minute I post this, I'll announce them at dinner that night.

For the route, some of the parking in Fort Stevens park requires a day use pass ($5). Expect to pay $2 for an all-day pass for the ferry. Parking at the Astoria Column is $1. So, in addition to hotel and meals, expect an extra $8 for caching-related expenses.

The day-long event kicks off at 5:00 AM at GC156JT, "Old Youngs Bay Bridge South", 46.1664, -123.8377.

As a reminder, the dinner event on Saturday, June 26 at the Wet Dog Café and Brewpub, 144 11th Street, Astoria (46.1903 -123.8316) is at 8:00 PM.

No poker games are planned, at least, not that I know of. ;)

I think you meant the Trolly.

  12. I have been in the Astoria area for the last week on vacation with the family and I have also been scouting a little bit.

Some thoughts... After asking I have been told that the reason for the No Trespassing signs at the East Bay Marina is to keep the public away from the Sea Lions. Apparently people have been walking down the floating dock section and the sea lions are aggressive. Seems to me you get what you deserve if you are that stupid.

While I was there I watched a steady stream of people walk right by the signs to take photos from the car drive area.

The trolley is weather dependent. This has the potential of causing a large problem. Today we were on the trolley in the rain when the conductor made the announcement that they would be parking the trolley for the rest of the day. This was at about 10 am. When wet they loose the ability to stop with any speed and it becomes too dangerous. This could cause a ~2 mile walk back to the car if not running.

The price for the trolley is $1 per person per use, or $2 for an all day pass.

Parking at the Astoria Column is $1 per car. Hope this helps.
