  1. I will have to rent some Snowshoes, but I am seriously thinking about joining you... Unless someone would be willing to lend me a pair.
  2. Well lookie here, out of school, new snowshoes and a HOTM in the snow..... I'm in! Ok a bit slow here, Dec or JAN
  3. Woo hoo - you rock, Andrew! (yes, that was a geology pun.) Thanks. It was a really fun cache that I had been working on for a while. 4000! Good grief! I'm still stretching for 400. Congrats! different styles, same fun.
  4. The original tree that was mentioned in the write up is located at N47 30.415 W121 57.499 Its a ways away from the cache. Really? Do you mean that the currently decorated tree isn't the original one? Cos I found a tree with ornaments quite close to the cache (saw it before finding the cache), and looks like other recent finders had a similar experience. Wonder what's changed. If you reread the write up he talks about finding a tree covered in ornaments, then not being able to find it when he went back to place the cache. He started the tree at the cache when he placed the cache. On the forth of July 06 I hiked up to Oh Tananbaum and then kept going south down the trail. About another mile up the trail I found a much larger tree covered in ornaments. Look at my log for July 4, 2006 for that cache, there are photos.

  7. Just keep in mind that not everything you read on an Earthcache listing will actually be correct. And sometimes the cache owner doesn't care enough to try to be accurate. I looked at the two EC's and they did sound quite interesting vs some of his others I have done but I'm not sure I want to be standing in a creek digging for agets & turtle turds in January. Actually you are correct, these do seem to be very interesting especially compaired to those we did last year. I wonder what the river level will be at? The problem I have is the term dinosaurs should not be on that listing. I actually sent him a very nice e-mail saying that I did like the listing but that one word was missleading and incorrect and gave a set of reasons why it wasn't correct. He does state that since he isn't a geologist he gets his info from various sources and may not be always correct, which I respect. However when a mistake is pointed out it probibly should be corrected, which he hasn't changed.

  9. I have been meaning to look for this one but seem to forget. I would like to find this one but will be thinking of the HOTM this month and will be on trail maintenance first weekend of Dec. Driving in or hiking in? If the gates open, you can get within a quarter mile of the cache, or do the three mile hike... Actually after talking to a few people I have heard that you can drive much closer then that... After some careful interrogation I found out that there is a route in from the south. Not the route in from the north like the Jester and I found. Either way I am in if it worked into the schedule. Nevermind. Forgot about a birthday party that I can't miss. I will get it eventually.

  11. That's so sad Anyone know who it is? I don't recognize the name given.
  12. I am out... Too long and I am on call. I will see you all later.
  13. So when is the next group going after the backpack?
  14. The main glitch is that if the title of the cache that you download to the unit is to long the unit will download it but when you press the GO button to drive to the cache it blanks out and re-boots. I went out to get 80 caches the other day and about 6 of them would not work. ScubaSonic Any idea what the break length is?
  15. I am glad that JCAR filled me in on the change of plans. I will not be able to make it on Halloween. JCAR and I will be at Spencer Island tomorrow at 7am if anyone wants to join us.
  16. I was looking at a few caches up in Snohomish County and noticed that there are property boundaries shown when you zoom in far enough. This will be very nice as a quick check to look at property boundaries, I hope it spreads to King County soon. I had heard that Google has dropped TeleAtlas as their preferred map provider and is now getting data from several sources. I guess the change has gone live. Anyone else notice any differences? Here is a blog talking about the switch.
  17. I am another possibility, as I have done a few caches here and would love to be able to do a though hike.
  18. Yea that looks do able. I am not thrilled at the idea of crossing a freeway on foot, but there never seems to be that much traffic that time in the morning.
  19. Ok now that the Cache Machine is over I can start properly thinking about this one. TotemLake, my origional thought was that we could hike up beside the freeway on the north side of the barriers, it is mostly flat and grassy there, then drop down across the creek. It would cut out a lot of time trying to bushwack across all the scrub brush. Abby, to be fair I have barely been on line the last week and hadn't responded to anyone. I haven't been ignoring you. Should be a great day to try those then hike up to the lake for lunch. Are we looking at a 7 or 8 am start or...
  20. Well if your just sayin... I thought about trying when I was thru there last week but I decided to spend my time walking along the Iron Goat instead. Are you interested in a morning or afternoon attempt? Morning would be better for me, but then we would need to leave enough time to hike up to the lake.

  22. Try this website, and look under the section labled plutonic and igneous fabric. If I am reading this correctly, the definition of magnetic foliation is loosely the planar foliation that occures among magnetic minerals, which may be different from planer orientation of minerals due to deformation. In your example (I think) it would seem to sugest a way of differentiating the pulses of the granitic intrusion that form the pluton. At the time scale that they are sugesting it would be unlikely that a magnetic reversal would take place so I think that they must be looking at the infered magnetic foliation deformation by the addition of further pulses. I admit that this was just being developed when I was in college and as a consultant I have long forgotten the finer details like this. Good for you for following such a specific topic.
