  1. I have MetroGuide USA v5.0, MetroGuide Europe v5.0, Trip & Waypoint Manager (shipped with GPSMAP 76CS), and CitySelect v5.0 all installed on the same computer and can switch from map data of all the in MapSource.

The only issue I had was I had to re-install Trip & Waypoint Manager to get my the USB drivers to work.

I would install them in the order of MapSource version. I would assume that newer version of MapSource will work with previous version data more easily than the other way around.

    MG USA v5.0 - MS 4.13

    MG Europe v5.0 - MS 5.x (I think)

    Trip & Waypoint Manager - MS 5.4

    CS v5.0 – MS ?.?

The order I installed was MG USA v5.0, MG Europe v5.0, Trip & Waypoint Manager, CS v5.0, and Trip & Waypoint Manager.

Sorry, no idea if MG v4 can auto route.

  2. Garmin eTrex (yellow) $96.88 at WalMart.com (see link below). I still have mine along with a GPSMAP 76s AND 76cs. For a basic GPS you cannot beat it. I suggest buying the data cable, will save you time typing in waypoints.

The next step depends upon how you want to use it. My next GPSr was the Garmin GPSMAP 76s ~$310.00 at gpscity.com (see link below), mapping was very useful. I have used it for driving as much as for Geocaching. You will need to buy the MetroGuide for the mapping.

My latest GPSr is the Garmin 76cs ~$460.00 at gpscity.com (see link below). Got it for faster CPU, more memory, and auto routing. Need to purchase CitySelect to use auto routing.

  3. If you have not blown away the tracks the shipped with the unit it is very interesting. Assuming it is not a flash image, which it could easily be, it might have been on during testing. Esp when the unit was actually moving (see log #34 below).

    The track data:

  4. Okay one suggestion to improve the keymap is for it to only show valid letters when searching. For example, if one is looking for a city and lets say there are only two cities, starting with the letter 'd' dogville and dodgeville. After selecting 'd' the only choice would be 'o'. After selecting 'o', there would be 2 choices 'd' and 'g'. Using the rocker key, it would skip over not possible letters.

  5. On a more serious note, Garmin is really missing an opportunity by releasing the 76C before the 76CS. I think it is safe to say there is more profit in the 76CS for Garmin, otherwise they would not manufacture it. If they released the 76CS first, not only would they be able to sell the unit to those who wanted it, they might have sold some of the units to those who were only going to by a 76C, especially if there was a period of time between the two product releases.

Obviously the same applies to the 60C & 60CS.

  6. When is gpscity.com going to change the Garmin GPSMAP 76CS "STOCK STATUS" to "We really have no idea!"

gpscity.com is killing ME!!!!! March 31st, Apr 30th, May 5th, Math 12th, ... Build me up and knock me down. Again and again and again ... .

Personally, I think gpscity.com should have gone with the Ides of March. <_<

  7. I have a 76s, I have taken it on two downhill skiing trips (to see how fast I could ski while staying in control -- 63.1 mph). I attached it to my glove to keep satellite reception. The screen did take a little longer to update (the crystals might have been cold), but it appeared to work. The first trip was to Lake Tahoe this time last year; the temperature was just above 32 df. The second trip was to Colorado this past January; the temperature was just below 32 df.

    Hope this helps.

  8. To be honest with you, if you like MetroGuide v4 do not bother with MetroGuide v5. I have both.

It has the same MapSource software (still does not import GPX files), but different maps. The maps have some differences. It does not even look like v5 has been updated with 2002/2003 data, some of the poi are over a year outdated. For example, places of business, such as major chain stores that have moved over a year ago have not been updated.

If you have v4 and buy v5, you will drive yourself nuts trying to figure out which maps are better. Since v4 has things that v5 does not, and vice versa. It would have been better if v5 was a superset that included all of v4 data plus the things that v5 added.

  9. I have Pocket Queries sent to me weekly in the GPX and eBook file formats. I use the Palm Pilot version of the MobiPocket software to view the eBook format. I frequently do searches for waypoints in MobiPocket, i.e. search on GC1234. There seems to be an issue with doing searches in MobiPocket. Sometimes the search finds the string and other times it does not find it (even though the string does exist in the file).

I am wondering if the searching problem is a result of corrupt eBook file being generated by the Pocket Query Generator or is it the MobiPocket software.

There is not much I can do about a corrupt eBook file, however if it is the MobiPocket software is there an alternative?

Does anyone have any alternative solutions to get cache descriptions on a Palm Pilot?

    Thanks in advance,
