  1. The nails used in this job are PK nails. I've been looking closer, and there are nails pounded all over the street! Obviously from previous jobs. How long do these usually stay in as reference points? Some of these nails look pretty worn. Are they ever removed?
  2. Thanks guys. I sort of had the idea that that's what they were used for. I also noticed that the marks on the opposite side of the street have different 2-letter designations (RW). Some of the disks are shiny silver-colored disks, and others are brass and stamped Cal Trans, our highway department. I did find one that they had placed on one side of the street, but then painted it over in black, and placed a mark on the other side. It was on a curve, so perhaps they couldn't get a good line of sight.
  3. There are some surveyors working on our main street over the last two days. They started with this mark (HS0908), and worked their way up the street. Along the way, they left small metal disks nailed into the street whereever they placed their transits. They had also spray painted numbers next to these disks. What do these disks mean? Is it just for future reference? Are they meant to be permanent? I also noticed a bunch of other large nails in the street, but with no disks or numbers. Could these have been older marks? Here's an image of one of the tags. Thanks in advance for any answers you may have.
  4. I have a 2002 Forester. Nearly 30,000 miles. I live in the Sierra Nevadas, and this car is a lot of fun. I am still new to Geocaching, so I haven't had to use my car much for it. But I fully intend to.
  5. I also carry a Fisher Space Pen. Came in handy over the weekend while signing a damp log. Best pen to carry with you.
  6. Thanks for the answers, guys. I had no specific location in mind, I just wanted to know if it ever arose.
  7. What is the policy on revisiting a cache you've already found? For instance, if a logged cache gets a travel bug, is it off-limits? Just curious. Thanks.
  8. Very helpful information. Using the descriptions listed on the page, I found the Bench Mark today. I had passed right over it a number of times, as it was placed on a textured cement wall, and had been painted over. I barely saw it! I shall try the suggestions you guys have given me.
  9. NAD83. That's what I meant. Here's the BM I'm referring to. HS0907
  10. That makes sense. Thanks. I will give it a try! Should I log the BMs with the WGS84 coordinates?
  11. And... nothing. Still shows up in the wrong place.
  12. Alright. I'll give it a shot. Thanks!
  13. Hrmm. I have both caches and benchmarks on now. If I change, the caches will be affected, right? Or do I delete all my benchmarks, reset the datum and then reload the bms?
  14. Thanks. They are all in NAD84 format. I guess I'll just stick to the descriptions, and just use the GPSr to get close.
  15. Brendan, I live down in Sonora. Where in Pinecrest is this?
  16. I went Benchmark hunting today. According to my topo map and downloaded waypoint, I went to one place. Then I went back to the BM's description, and found it was about 300 ft. away. Same went for all the BM's I looked for today. All about 300 ft. South of where they should have been. The caches have been dead on, so what's the prob with the BMs? Please help!!
  17. Is there a way to search benchmarks by date? Or is it purely by location?
  18. Today, I joined the 1/1 club! (I've only had my GPSr for 2 days) I fully intend to search both caches and benchmarks. They're both like scavenger hunts, and finding things is finding things!
  19. Hey, guys. Still awaiting my first GPSr, so I thought I'd figure out some things first, so I'll be ready to go. I've downloaded EasyGPS, and I've started downloading waypoints. On the closest cache to me (GC4E9C), I noticed "also download nearest placenames" under the "Download Waypoint File" link. What is the benefit of placenames? How do they help me in my search? Any information on this would be most helpful. Thanks in advance. Chris
  20. DaveD, thanks for your original response. Very informative. I was confused by the difference in the numbers, as the BM is nearly at the top of the Dome, and about 10 feet from the wooden height marker. So I take it not all BM's are dated? Not a big deal, but fun to see. Thanks again.
  21. Hey, all. New to the hunt. So I have a few questions. I found a BM (AC6135) a year or so ago on a camping/rafting/hiking trip on the Kern River. While looking up the original datasheet for this find, I saw the Designation as VA 7165. What does this mean? At first, I thought it was elevation-related, but there is a 60' discrepancy between the listed elevation and this number. I have searched for more info, but have been unable to find any. Also, I noticed a lot of BMs listed for my area don't have designations. How are designations used? Also, I noticed that there is no date marked on this BM. Is that common? Any info would be very helpful. Thanks. Chris (awaiting shipment of my first GPSr)
  22. Thanks for the answers. Gives me something to think about. Is there a good place to buy used software (other than Ebay)? The price of buying new is concerning me a bit.
  23. Hey, guys. I received some nice Christmas cash, so I'm getting a GPSr. I'm thinking of the Magellan Sportrak Map. Has the features I'm looking for and the price (plus rebate) is right. My question to you is... what about the software? I know that Magellan is offering a rebate on the software, but do I really need it? The Topo software sounds more appealing. I am planning to use the GPSr for Geocaching and camping/hiking. The 4 mb of memory concerns me a bit. Please help me out. Thanks a bunch! Chris (Shtick)
