  1. my original querry might be stated to be that i am interested in locating the caches that are along side the trail. within a .1 or .2 miles would not be too bad a hike considering the scope of the trail. i did like the idea of that markwell had, only i am not a premium member. also i am not sure what sbell is trying to say. not such a technical person myself. (no offense) more information is needed is all i am trying to say. when i search for Appalachian Trail- i only get about 8 or 10 results and they are scattered about. i am guessing that there is much work to be done for this to be a concrete realistic goal. if all owners would write near Appalacian Trail in their cache title this could be a lot easier. any other ideas? Thanks for your input. SC
  2. I was thinking that when I do finally take the trek of all treks up the Appalachian Trail I would like to take my GPS and cache along the way. I know there is some debate about the caches placed on or near the trail but my point is that these caches are out there, although I have not found a good way to search for them to compile a list just yet. has anyone else tried this? has anyone been successful? i think it would be great to have a list to go from to aid the search of caches along the AT. if anyone has had any luck with this please share here. also if you own a cache that is along the Trail, maybe you would be able to make note of it so that when others search by keyword or something they can find it. post other suggestions here as well. thanks, SC
  3. That is exactly what i am talking about. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! sorry that i missed it but glad that you didnt.
  4. to me that was a bit more than i wanted to do really. and the information given was very minimal. maybe if you own one it tells you more. in all the actual mileage of a TB is inacurate anyway because they do take a lot of trips before actually being dropped off at another location and i dont think that that is very important. they travel as crows fly and the fun of it is to see pictures of your TB and hear stories of their adventures and so on. right?
  5. I recently found a Travelertag from travelertag.com and thought i might give it a try to play along as i have had some fun and some adventures with some travelbugs that i have found and helped on their missions. So i grabbed this basket with a tag on it and went to the website mentioned and found it to be a real pain in the ...... it asks for all this information and makes you register to do anything. then it actually gives you very little information. has anyone else encountered such things and am i getting the wrong impression?
  6. I know that there is a page that we can print and put in a new cache, but is there a page that i can print and send along with my TB to let everyone, even newbies the skinny on TBs? probably a dumb question but the only dumb questions are the ones not asked.
  7. That group hike was amazing and I am still a bit sore from our adventure. I am very grateful to have met up with all of you and I wanted to say thank you to all of you that were there. All of it was made possible by you quaddy for filling me in. Better late than never. If you are ever planning another hike like that, let me know as I will do my best to get out there and do it. Until next time, Happy Caching to all. Stormchild
  8. My wife and I usually go caching together when we have time off together but that happens rarely and I end up going solo. not that this is bad but sometimes i feel that maybe this might be more phun if i knew more people that "played the game". I am 28 and like everyone in here i love the outdoors! i have found under 20 caches in the past year and would like to hunt many more. Most people seem shy in their profiles, and i am just as guilty. anyway i live in wappingers falls and am hoping to meet some new people by posting this. Happy Caching Stormchild
  9. i am currently trying to download some new waypoints from ezgps to my geko 201 and i keep getting error 22 and 23. i have not had this trouble before and i dont know why. has anyone else ever encountered this? i even tried to uninstall and reload the program. i have not used my gps in a while but i just put new batteries in it. i am not a happy cacher right now. not sure what else to try thanks for your ideas. m
  10. i am new to the sport myself and i am not very familiar with that particular model, however i am sure that any gpsr that has a good amount of waypoint storage, and is easy to use and understand would be a good bet. i would also recomend a model that has interfacing capabilities so that you can download waypoints to your pc and then to your gpsr. i recently downloaded the program easygps for mine and am still trying to figure it out but i think it will be very helpful once i get it figured out. i dont know how others use the mapping features as my gps does not have that but track back is very helpful for finding your way out of the woods once you get in there. i try to remember to mark the waypoint where i parked so that i can always find my way back. but if i forget i use the trackback feature. good luck and welcome to geocaching!!!!
  11. i recently downloaded easygps to my computer and am starting to figure out how to use it with my geko 201. i am really only interested in storing information about waypoints and have successfully downloaded and transfered data to my gpsr. however i am wondering how others use this program. do you download the coordinates and then put in coordinates for the parking area under a similar name? and do you ever use the route feature and what are some good uses for that feature? also the tutorials for the program are pretty bland. are there any users that have used this program for a while that may have some helpful hints? if you can help i would appreciate it. thanks SC
  12. i just recently purchased a garmin geko 201 and decided that it would be best to have a pc interface cable to input information from this site to my unit. i would like to know what downloadable software there is available for such an application and where i can get it from. thanks for your time. Stormchild just clicked around a bit and found some on the site under links for those who might be interested. i am not sure which program is most compatible with my needs and computer just yet but i wanted to let others know that i did find something and it was under my nose the whole time. anyway if others are interested in finding some info look on the main page under links.
  13. i just got mine and there is no ridge on it i was thinking of how i am going to overcome this obsticle and was thinking of getting a piece of rubber o ring or something like it and just glueing it on there but the hot glue thing sounds pretty good i may have to try it if i can find a hot glue gun somewhere thanks for the tips sc
  14. usually the coordinates get you pretty close. then if you look around the general area you usually find the cache. sometimes you may want to look at the hint if you need to try searching for caches rated with a level 1 for difficulty first then as things get easier and you and your gpsr are on the same page, move on to the more difficult ones. micros are smaller so they may be harder to find. Welcome to a great activity and i hope i was helpful - happy geocaching
  15. just wanted to say thank you for all of your input. i will put a guard on my power button, buy a cable, and try to get my hands on the new software as well. when i do i will probably have to ask for some more help but until then, happy gpsing and may the phorce be with you
  16. If you have a Geko 201 i am interested in learning more about its functions. i just got mine and although a lot of it is straight forward i would like to communicate with other users about some specifics. thank you for your time, SC
