  1. I've definitely noticed fewer TB's out there since I started in 2008. I also wondered if it was related to the iPhone apps etc. I think there are some O/C cachers out there who are hoarding them. Just check out this mega event GC4MEGA and see all the Jeep trackables listed as attending...over 40. They are all in the hands of the same guy who just keeps moving them from event to event and never releases them.
  2. I just got back from a trip to Bali/Flores/Komodo and geocached using my iPhone. I used wifi every chance I could and added the geocaches to my "saved" list. Someone else I know (who wasn't geocaching) unlocked their iPhone and bought a simcard upon arrival in Denpasar with unlimited data plan for $30/30 days. I highly recommend the app CityMaps2Go (free) which allows you to download maps onto your iPhone for everywhere. Another suggestion I have is to bring a piece of paper with a description of what geocaching is in Indonesian (you can find an Indonesian "so you found this geocache" page on the Hide a Cache page). We found many people didn't understand what we were doing, and many of the caches in Bali require you to ask someone to get it for them (such as Holy Springs Temple in Ubud). We nearly got arrested in Jakarta because a security guard thought we were "taking" something...and there was no description inside the cache to describe to him what we were doing. Have fun!!!
  3. And another one from the West Coast of Vancouver Island.
  4. Here are some of mine from British Columbia: Hope this works
  5. A woman's perspective - I love this idea! Especially part 3 with the wedding related swag. That makes it a little more original. I have always thought this would be a romantic way to propose if both people like geocaching. I came close when my former boyfriend once snuck a ring in a cache and let me find it - only to confess that it was a prank. I didn't speak to him for the rest of the day.
  6. What's a computer crash got to do with the DVD? Just re-install it. The DVD can be installed on any number of computers. The maps are locked to the GPSr, not your computer. Okay, I didn't know that. Obviously I've been fed some false information from a friend who said he could only download City Navigator on two computers, and when he bought a new computer Garmin wouldn't let him get a new unlock key. So what you're saying is you can load the maps onto as many computers as you like, but you can only send it to one GPS? That's awesome news, and really makes me want to buy a DVD now. These forums are great for learning new stuff!
  7. An interesting and timely post. I am also thinking of buying City Navigator maps. Right now I have 3 SD cards - City Nav Europe, Topo Western Canada, and Ibycus on a 60CSx. I have no problem with storage of caches, but am thinking of going to DVD for the NT map so I have the option of upgrades. I never thought of using it on my car's Nuvi too! My question is, what happens if your computer crashes or you upgrade it? Will Garmin replace your DVD or do you have to buy a new one? At least with an SD card, I know my 60CSx will be with me for years to come...knock wood.
  8. they will only show up if you have the tide charts loaded. otherwise there wont be one. did you download and install that link on garmin's website for the tide points? My vista will only show icons for items currently loaded on the gps The download worked great, I sent the map from Mapsource to my gps and now I have Marine info with tide charts. Unfortunately, it looks like I overwrote my Ibycus topo SD card. When I go to "Setup" -> "Map" on my GPS the only selection I have is Tide Points. If I turn it off, I still have no topo. I'm not sure how to get two maps onto an SD card from Mapsource, I'll have to play around with it. I still have Ibycus on a CD so I can replace it.
  9. 1. I do not have a "Marine" icon. When I hit FIND I get: Waypoints, Geocache, Cities, POI, Exits, Recent Find and Geographic Points. Nothing Marine. I have compared my 60CSx with a friends and the screens are different. The ONLY differences between our units is his is 2 years older and he's using City Navigator (CD), I'm using Garmin BC/AB Topo (SD). So it sounds like it's something to do with using a CD for maps instead of an SD card... 2. I will try downloading the suggested files from Garmin, but since I use an SD card I guess I'll have to switch back and forth or will the tide charts overlay the topo? 3. I'm thinking of buying City Navigator anyways, so maybe this is an advantage to ordering the CD vs SD. Thanks for all your posts!
  10. I have read some older posts on this topic but can't find anything that will help me. Basically, I bought my 60CSx because a friend had one, and I liked the Tide Chart info it provided. I was reassured when I bought mine that it had that capability. (My friend purchased MetroGuide Canada v4 but NOT bluechart maps.) So now, I don't have Tide Charts on mine! I called Garmin support and they said I would have to purchase Bluechart maps to get tide info. But I want to use my Topo sd card because I primarily use it for hiking. Believe it or not, knowing when the tide is high or low is very helpful when hiking on the Wet Coast of BC! Has anyone else come across this problem? I think Garmin changed their products over the years, and the newer versions don't have tide charts. If that's the case, how can I use 2 mapsets on my gps?
  11. Don't let the paperless purists deter you from continuing to do what you do. It would be easier if you figure out how to load the caches onto the gps, but printing the pages is the way a lot of people start out until you get the hang of it. I was exactly like you up until about 350 finds, then I received an iTouch as gift and that takes the place of the paper. I still bring my cell phone and digital camera.
  12. I've done that also, and it was an out of town cache to boot! The next person who was at the cache picked up the TB and logged that they "found" it - out of the cache I had inadvertently put it in. All was okay.
  13. I take my beagle with me for protection and companionship since I hike alone a lot. I'm actually more afraid of the weirdos I meet on trails than bears or cougars, and carry bear spray all the time. He's an unusual beagle because he can be very aggressive if threatened. He also has a built in GPS system which points him to all balls, and an automatic tracking system that allows him to "find the car" where ever we are. Yesterday while hiking in a remote area of Vancouver Island I came across a massive stray Great Dane. Weirdest thing ever to see this dog way out in the middle of nowhere. Tracked her for 30 minutes before I could convince her to get near me, she was obviously terrified. Then, once I got her back to my car, I had the dilemma of what to do next? There were no cars driving by, it was getting dark, all I knew was there was a campground a couple miles away and a coffee shop a few miles the other way. Of course, the dog had NO ID, just an electric shock collar. Can't believe people do that. Always have your phone/cell number on your dog's collar! The dog solved the problem by hopping into the back seat of my tiny Mazda 3 (had to open the side window so she could stick her head out, otherwise she was too big.) My beagle was NOT IMPRESSED but knew she was way to big to take on. I headed to the coffee shop thinking they would know who owned the dog and came across a woman walking her dog. She was flabbergasted that the dog had escaped her neighbour's electrified fence. She relieved me of the massive canine and off I drove, feeling so glad I wasn't the owner panicking over a lost dog.
  14. This happened to me the first time also. I think I left "country" and "state/province" unselected. Try it again putting those in, as well as your "origin".
  15. I know there are a few Kelowna RCMP employees who are geocachers, surprised they didn't clue in to this faster. Luckily, no one was tasered. Otherwise we'd have to add lock 'n locks to staplers and box cutters as lethal weapons.
  16. I have a Garmin 60CSx which I use for hiking and geocaching and I used my Blackberry 8800 with Geocache Navigator for urban caching. I love paperless caching with my BB. A note of caution regarding using your BB: you are screwed if there is no cell phone coverage. And don't drop it in the snow. I did. Now I have a Blackberry Bold and it's terrible, battery only lasts one day WITHOUT caching!
  17. This topic has been covered in other forums, after the new upgrades to geocaching.com, the send to GPS function doesn't work with IE6. Looks like you might have to upgrade to IE7.
