  1. I've used it recently with three local Whereigos as a back up to my new Garmin Oregon 450. The Garmin keeps crashing. PiGo never did. Issues with the iPhone are (1) The battery runs down alarmingly (I have a portable recharge unit but it's a bit bulky in the pocket. (2) I am told you cannot upload cartridges as some cache sites require. (3) PiGo saves automatically which means there is no going back if you get it wrong.
  2. Following the above kind advice I had another download sequence. If you have been following this story you will know that I already had 500 caches (actually based on Clevedon)downloaded. First I downloaded a single cache from Toronto direct from the Groundspeak list based on a search for that city. Then I downloaded 400 caches via an unzipped pocket query transferred direct via windows. Then I went back to the Garmin site and downloaded 5 caches from Glasgow. All the caches downloaded successfully as far as I can tell and I can access them all fine. I am relieved and left with a mystery of what went wrong before. I wonder if perhaps something became corrupted when the Brean Down Wherigo crashed. Thank you Bear and Ragged for your comments; I have looked again at Graculus' most helpful web resources and also at Madproforg's further suggestions which I shall follow up. Now, tomorrow, do I try to follow the suggestions for better screen contrast or try to download the cycle maps, or shall I do the outstanding chores I have at home and in Bristol? Oh hang it I think I'll just go and do 'The Nailsea wander'.
  3. I forgot to say that I fitted the Garmin bike mount successfully - but it is a semi permanent fit and any lucky owner of two bikes would need a second one - or the RAM mentioned by Madproforg. I immediately cycled into the sunlight-on-grey-map problem and so will try the maps mentioned above - thank you very much for the tip. The following query probably should be on a different thread. Please point me in the right direction if appropriate. I downloaded five caches using the Garmin downloader and then all the caches I'd downloaded using a pocket query from the main Geocache web site disappeared. The file was still in the GPX folder on the Oregon 450 but the touch screen could only see the Garmin-downloaded caches. I deleted the five and the Garmin then said it had no caches. I solved the problem by recopying the GPX file onto the GPSr. Is it possible to get the Oregon to see both? Will I have the same problem if I download a second batch of caches from the main site?
  4. Just noticed and tried this - awsome! One more reason why Apple will 'rule the world' once it has an accurate GPSr and longer battery life in GPS mode.
  5. This, I hope will be my last comment on this thread. Over the weekend I took my new Garmin Oregon 450 to the Bringing Brean Down to life event and successfully found all 6 caches. The accuracy seems fine. I am finding the user interface so/so. It is easier than the Satmap but using makes me appreciate just how intuitive the iPhone geocaching app is. When Apple improve the accuracy of their gpsr and extend the battery life the iPhone will be unbeatable. After the event I went on to do the Brean Down Fort Wherigo cartridge. This turned out to be a test of the Garmin and the iPhone running the PiGo app. It is a fairly unsophisticated adventure and both platforms coped most of the way. Again the ipad suffered from its relative inaccuracy. Unfortunately just at the end the Garmin crashed completely. (A remove battery crash). Without the iPhone I should have been unable to complete the cartridge and log the physical cache.
  6. Unbelievable - I now have large scale GB maps - I can't quite believe I managed to do that.
  7. Oregon and handlebar mount arrived 2pm this afternoon. The mount says suitable for Colorado/Oregon/Apprach/Dakota. It fits into the back slide of the Oregon and attaches to a 1 inch handlebar with cable ties. I haven't tried it yet but it looks straightforward. I have successfully downloaded local caches and the Wherigo. Now for Talky Toaster's maps...
  8. I read this thread this afternoon and have ordered an Oregon 450 from HandTek this afternoon £274 including handlebar mount. I have just been emailed that it will be delivered tomorrow. Hopefully I shall be able to attempt the Brean Fort Wherigo when I attend the 'Bringing Brean Down to Life' event cache on Saturday. Thanks for everyone's words of wiz. I also have a yellow Etrex (great) and a Satmap Active 10 with all UK OS maps but I have never got on too well with the Satmap.
  9. It might be an idea for you to contact the Fruitloops directly, in case they don't see it here. That's what I did, and all being well I'm going to be contacted again nearer the date. Rgds, Andy Thanks for suggestion. I will do that now.
  10. I contacted you before, thinking you were going Aug 12. As I didn't hear from you I have just posted a note on the cache site asking if anyone is going on Sept 10. Then I considered making the matter a forum topic only to find it already here, and that you are now planning Sept 10 anyway. Can I come with you? Have you any more details yet?
  11. Coin is now activated correctly - problem solved. Thanks to all for your help.
  12. Thanks Maine Family. Here is a shortened and edited copy of an email I have just sent Rowanf. Let's hope this will lead to an answer. 'About a year ago I purchased a (very fine) Rowan gypsy geocoin at the Mega event at Weston-Super-Mare in England. I have never bought coins before or since but I thought I had properly activated this coin. It appears in the Groundspeak inventory as a coin belonging to me with the reference TBNG3Z. Because I am owner it also shows the Tracking Number as PC****. Recently I placed this coin in its first geocache (GC2BXK9 'Fruit and Nut) and it was retrieved by the fellow cacher. When he tried to log the coin he received a message that the coin was unactivated. This is because the actual coin has the tracking number PC???? on it. When I gave him the PC**** number he was able to log the find and the coin is now listed in his possession. It seems the coin must have been in the wrong sleeve and had the wrong activation code attached. Clearly he cannot move the coin on as every other finder will encounter the same problem. Would you be able to give me the correct activation code for the coin PC???? If so I believe I could activate the coin correctly and then ask Groundspeak to deactivate and remove PC**** from my inventory.'
  13. I am the member who placed the coin. Somehow when I activated this coin I actually activated one with a different code without realising it. When Captain Gore-tex, having taken the coin from its first cache, tried to log it he couldn't. I was able to give him the tracking code because it appears on my owner's page, and that is how he was able to place it in his inventory, but this is not the code on the coin itself. Obviously we cannot just move the coin on, or the next finder will have the same problem. As I now have no documentation about this coin, I suggested we simply delete it. However, as you probably know, the Captain is made of sterner stuff than me and is determined to sort this out if possible. So if anyone knows how to get the activation code for this coin we will follow it up and try to start again with it.
  14. Just when I thought we were safe.... along come Captain Gore-tex and Valliant Knight to knock us off the board. Oh well the competition was great fun and my only regret that I could not solve any more of the puzzles. Congratulations to the winners and a happy 2010 to all
  15. Thanks for update, Birdman. I'm trying to do the others - but they are too ****** hard for me! I'll have another look at yours. Cheers.
  16. We don't go on the forums much and I have been having trouble with reading this particular one - inexperience I guess. Thank you for mentioning us in this way! I have looked at the others but am struggling. Good luck in your quest.
  17. But my Satmap still takes up to ten minutes to lock on in good conditions even after being back to the factory for an antenna rebuild and is not as sensitive as my back-up etrexh. The Satmap strength is the OS maps and the Satsync software seems to work fine if you don't load up more than one set of 500 caches at a time. The Satmap controls are not very intuitive for me. I should love to try the Oregon and the Iphone!
  18. I have a 2 year old HTC touch with no gps. Does anyone know if Wherigo can be persuaded to run on it if I obtain an external blueooth gps? This would be my first experience of Wherigo but there are a number of such caches in my area.
  19. Last October I bought the Satmap but I find it takes between five and fifteen minutes to lock on, even in favourable conditions, the screen scratches incredible easily, the battery life is short and the program sometimes freezes. I (with hindsight foolishly) bought the 1:50,000 maps for the whole UK which are ok but are hard to read in outdoor light and do not merge that well with the supplied map when you zoom. I wrote to Satmap to ask for guidance and sent a reminder but they haven't bothered to reply. This is a pity because their recent update has addressed the other problems I had and their Satsync program makes paperless caching a real possibility. In desperation I have now bought an etrex h. I am very impressed with this little cheapo. It locks on while the Satmap is still loading its program and I have the feeling it gets me to the right co-ordinates more surely than the Satmap. I'm sorry I have no experience of the other Garmins so cannot comment on the Oregon etc.
