  1. New Zealand based (and manufactured) competitor to Lock n Lock. Very nice containers. Ah, Thank you. Basically the biggest plastic container range youll find in the local supermarket. Most are clear, so we spray paint them black as well
  2. Looks like the Queensland Aus souvenir has been released, as i just earned it after logging a cache. When i logged the last one in QLD, i didnt get anything and that was on the 17th...
  3. lol excuse my ignorance in this area. They look pretty nice, and are actually easier than the hand crank charger to use...
  4. My first cache was a PVC pipe about half a meter long with a pvc lid and base(glued on with plumbers glue i think...) It is approaching 4 years now and is still fine(other than when some animal tried to eat through the lid, which we later replaced). Most of the rest(other than the event i hosted) are all sistema containers. I also have one that is an eclipse tin(currently disabled). Sistemas seem to be the best, unless you want to spend the money on pvc pipe...
  5. I just thought it would be nice for us cachers to share our first caching experience and/or how we found out about geocaching. Here's mine: I live in QLD, Australia. I used to be associated with a Scouts-like group, and used to do camps, etc. with them. On one occasion we went for a hike up Mt. Bartle Frere. We climbed it on the 23/08/2008. At the summit, this cache had been placed. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GC11FJB (our log is the one about 28 pathfinders...) No Geocachers had found it yet, but many muggles had. One of the men in our group found it and signed it for us. A few days later, i scoured the internet for some game that was connected this box we had found, and eventually found geocaching.com So i became a member on 30/08/2008. This was my first geocaching experience... Thanks walterhellmut for showing me about geocaching. I still have not logged this cache as found but am planning to go up eventually and sign the log... Please share your stories below... Thanks Condorito
  6. IMHO those are not pretty and I would not want them. But the concept is very similar to this http://badgegen.com/ which runs through GSAK. I have them on my profile. Project-GC has recently started implementing BadgeGen into it's tools also. http://project-gc.co...le/ProfileStats Not too many people know about project-GC yet, but I think it will go on to be very popular. I did not know about them having stats for your profile yet, thanks! It needs some work though. Look at my profile. The very last thing "these didn't make the list" got cut off. And if you try any of the tabs at the top of the statistics HTML output, they don't work, they take you to his website. And none of the links for caches work either, they again take you to his website. That's due to limitations on Groundspeak's side of things(I think). If you don't want an automatically updating image of your stats then you need to download the static html file provided and all links/tabs should work fine without being redirected. OK, I have the static stats from Project GC in my profile now. Works good, all the links and tabs work too. I've got stinkin' badges!! I don't really care about stinkin' badges, but here you see you can get GSAK style badges from the much easier to figure out than GSAK project GC. Oh I have a blue belt too, although I have no clue what that means. Wow... Pretty amazing stats... Mine are lame compared The belt is also relevant to your stats and is calculated by certain things you have done... You can see my stats at my geocaching.com user profile.. It is an example of what it looks like on your profile. If you have your stats uploaded to your gc profile, you can click on 'more belt info' or more badge info or something like that. It will show what you need to get up to the next level, and what you need to get up to the next belt. I can't attach a photo as I'm on the ipad ATM, but check it out if you like...
  7. very interesting how people find out about geocaching...
  8. I thought of something like this, but you would have to have it out... For example, we are going on a 4-day hike in august, and wont have any power... so it would be hard to mount it on my back, and wed only be stopping at night and for lunch or something like that... But a god idea for stationary cachers without power....
  9. Badgegen is definitely the most well developed tool for this task... GSAK is hard to set up, but after that it is pretty simple...
  10. This +1 (except the amount of years) haha
  11. Sounds like a good trip... I might just end up buyin it and the apple world travel kit... I've read up on it and all iDevices are compatible with electricity worldwide(according to my understanding)... Thanks again, and if anyone else has anything else to say or another idea please don't be shy! Condorito
  12. Just for anyone interested, I was having a look a tech stuff on SVPPLY, and I saw this thing called the Pocket Socket... Apparently you charge stuff with it and it is a hand cranked generator... Here is the website: http://www.k-tor.com/hand-crank-generator/ It sounds like a good option for those in the Americas or Europe, but I think the socket won't work with chargers for those of us in Australia. Just thought it was worht mentioning
  13. If you are speaking about ios in general, you can still turn location services off via Settings>Privacy>Location Services... Still, in this case we would need it, just not a constant update of our location...
  14. A good suggestion. If I were concerned with battery consumption, I would check the direction and distance to see I need to go 0.8 miles south. Then change the display to one that doesn't use the GPS and then head south. Once I had gone a fair distance, open the app and check to see where I am in relation to the cache. Rinse. Repeat. Once I am close enough, THEN keep the GPS 'running' to make the find. It would be nice if there were some sort of function within the app to 'turn off' location services temporarily. This could be a button in the top right or left hand corner... That would help save heaps of battery. Even if it automatically switched off when you didn't actively need it, such as when you are browsing caches. It could do the initial location lookup to show nearest caches, then disconnect until you select a cache, or even update every 20seconds or something like that. Maybe have it customizable in the app settings
  15. This sounds like a good idea... Maybe something on the wanted list for the ios app? Thanks for the suggestion...
  16. Thanks for the comments... Hopefully apple can beef up the battery in its next iteration of th e ipad and iPhone, or make the GPS use less. Thanks Condorito
  17. I was just wondering if there is a way that geocaching can change the app so that it uses less battery... This is currently the only way I geocache. When I use the app, battery consumption goes through the roof, and the ipad gets hot, and yeah. The iPhone also gets heaps of juice sucked out of it... I know that we should expect this because it uses location services and Internet, but there must be a way to reduce it. It's my most battery consuming app out of the 70 or so that I have... The maps app uses location services and the Internet as well, and uses hardly any battery compared IMHO... Just a thought... Any comments?
  18. Sounds pretty good to me, but it would definitely need the quick select option. There could also be select whole row and whole column buttons above or to the left of the numbers... I think many people have been wanting a better system for pq d/t selections... I would make it much easier to find caches that have unique d/t ratings you haven't found. Condorito
  19. sounds pretty interesting to me... I would like to see it happen
  20. A great idea... like i said before, something ike this would be nice and tbs are one of GS's biggest money-makers so they should look at things like this
  21. i think this is a great idea... I would use it all the time... I don't know how hard it would be to make, but it would be nice to see which caches you have found by D/T rating.
  22. I agree, there's still some points to be improved. I suggested some improvements a while ago (http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=286848&st=0&p=4921514&fromsearch=1entry4921514) and to be fair, the labels are much better now. But the map itself is still too small. Maybe the best idea would be to move the whole trackable map over to the regular geocaching map (http://www.geocaching.com/map/). Kind regards Jens I agree... I own 17 tbs and have another 50 on the way, and i enjoy following their journey... There are improvements that could and should be made...
  23. I am just trying to think of a way to fix the root of the problem long term, rather than ignore the problem and treat the symptom. People pay for TB's and disappearance rate is high. Even if there were an non-mandatory informative video re tb's, it might help slow down the disappearance of TB's. The people who lose tb's are normally geocachers who are starting out and don't yet understand because NOONE TOLD THEM! Geocaching is meant to be self-taught, so trackables should at least be mentioned in the instructional video. This would IMHO considerably lessen tb murders. Back to the main topic, i still think this idea by The Blorenges is great and i wish GS would implement it sooner rather than later
  24. Technically, you can save the geocache to a saved list... This downloads the coords, description, hint, recent(last few) logs, photos(optional) and any other data relative to the cache. However, this obviously has to be done when you ARE connected to the internet, and then it will be saved to the iDevice. I do this using the Geocaching app. Firstly, search for the cache you want to save within the app (search for nearby or search by gc code. Click on the geocache as if you are going to find it. The first option is Navigate to Geocache. The second is Add to Saved List. Select this one. Typ the name of your saved caches list, and then click new. This will create the list and save the cache. Then, when you don't have internet and are wanting to find the cache, open the Geocaching app. Once it loads, look at the bottom of your screen. The furthest left option is search, the next is saved. Click on this one. Your saved lists, with the caches contained within them, will appear here. Hopefully this is good for you, it is what i use sometimes. Thanks,
