  1. What is the difference between an "active" cache and an "archived" cache as far its environment impact is concerned?
  2. If this hobby is called a game then are there not rules? I have never heard of a game without rules. GC has a couple webpages dedicated to rules and guidelines, if everyone plays the game any way they want shouldn't GC just remove those pages? What are they good for? I dont know who this group is and Im not interested in finding out either, but what they are doing is wrong. Am I offended? No I'm not but then I dont cache for the numbers but I understand where the frustration of the OP comes from. We got to a point where we cant point out wrongdoing without people aggressively defending that behavior using all sort of excuses and tactics like the most classic ones : "It doesnt affect me" and "Its a game and anyone plays anyway they want". There just arent anything that people do that is wrong anymore.
  3. That's a wrong guess. There are more Garmin Topo Maps (France, Italy, Norway and Austria) with Active Routing available in Europe. Hans I said that because the link in the page of this firmware version sends me to a German page about this Active Routing so I still dont know what this feature does exactly.
  4. I guess this activerouting feature must be only for Germany.
  5. Im wondering if this new format was created because of what Garmin calls Adventures that can be created in Basecamp that works as a container like the same way as a MKV file! As I understand an "adventure" can be made of several things like a route, a cache, a road trip, etc and I think GPX is not able to have all of that. Just a guess.
  6. Im more concerned about the map redraw. It doesnt seem fast enough and Im concerned that at somewhat high speed (for ie on a bike) it will not refresh fast enough like the 550 that I own. Will need to read the reviews to make a decision but I will definitely wait till it comes down to the $300.00 range... Definitely not paying $500.00 for a GPS... Those days are gone.
  7. And the best part : "Unlimited Geocaching: The Oregon can hold an unlimited number of geocaches and supports GPX files from OpenCaching.com for downloading geocaches and details straight to the unit. Using this paperless geocaching feature, users are not only helping the environment but also improving efficiency. The Oregon stores and displays key information, including location, terrain, difficulty, hints and descriptions— it even filters users caches to make searching a breeze, and connects to Chirp® enabled caches." Finally.
  8. How do you know this? Citation? Link to sales data? I'm not doubting you, I'm simply curious to see the sales data. I would guess that people are not willing to pay $400-$500 for a dedicated GPS machine anymore. Those days are gone. As good the Montana might be at the end of the day its just a GPS machine and nothing else.
  9. Agreed 100% with everything you said. I think the spirit of geocaching has been lost.
  10. I dont know what you are complaining about here. Its a Garmin device, they have their own geocaching website which they support and you you want them to help you with an outside geocache provider?? Be lucky that the device still support GC caches. I wonder how long it will last.
  11. I think folks are taking this a bit too lightly... How long do you think police will be tolerating these false alarms in the guise of an online scavenger hunt game without starting hitting with penalties in the form of bills or more severe stuff?
  12. Theres another bomb scare because of someone hiding a container nearby a Walmart. bomb scare at Marshall Walmart The more disconcerting part is the last paragraph. If the police finds who hid the container the two individuals will be in trouble.
  13. Im finding this version to be very unstable. I keep getting random crashes. I disable the Prompt route activity as it causes alot of problems on my 550. Lots of work to be done by Garmin before this can come out of Beta.
  14. I guess the question is who should I contact within CN to find out more?
  15. I was just wondering if someone had any experience dealing with CN about getting permission to let people walk on old abandoned and inactive but still leased tracks. Around my area there is a stretch of 18 kms of railway that leads to a closed mine that shutdown in late 80's. The tracks are still on the ground but have not been used since 1995. The I have heard that CN is just waiting for the lease with the mine to end to tear it up. I thought that the line would make an nice hike as it crosses the woods with some nice scenery. SO I was wondering if someone knows who I could contact to get the permission or if I should just forget about it? Thanks
  16. I think someones going to get a nice bill in the mail soon.
  17. Its not bad... it took nine replies before Highpointer made his comment. I expected it to show alot sooner. Tracou like others said check with the reviewer or if you know a cacher that has premium membership that lives nearby send that person a note and Im sure you will he/she will gladly help you.
  18. Why? What difference does it make really? Around here a few people are doing it so they can complete those puzzle challenge caches like consecutive caching days, filling the days of the month, etc etc. Some are blatantly doing it but nobody seem to care so...
  19. I have no idea of what you are talking about. Go here http://www.openstreetmap.org/ create an account and start editing...
  20. This is great news folks. By using openstreetmaps it means more people will be updating those maps and soon all roads will be on the map and we finally will have accurate and up to date maps for our GPS's.
  21. GC should do the right thing and its to take down the cache and remove all the logs that didnt comply with the webcam cache. No photo from the webcam no find. Its time for GC to start enforcing their own guidelines.
  22. This doesnt solve the underlying problem of what is a 'quality' cache! Based on the Op proposal if I put a nano in a lamppost and pay the $10 then it will automatically become a 'quality' cache? I believe that the favorite points feature covers this issue nicely, but Im starting to notice a trend of cache owner putting out caches and asking for people to give favorite points for their caches... I think the best indication is to look at the logs. Good caches generally attract more interesting logs and thats the ones that I am interested the most.
  23. To me Wherigos failed because cachers had to work to get the smiley. No instant gratification of going to a place and get a cache and thus a smiley. And not like a multi where you still have a cache on each site to find. Wherigos also required equipment that was not widely available too. And most importantly what a pain in the dog to develop a cartridge. Kudos to those that spent time to learn and actually make wherigos. So yeah it failed. I did three wherigos and was not really satisfied with the outcome. So its not a cache I particularly look forward to.
  24. Based on the folks opinions so far can I log your cache as a find? From what I read so far I dont have to sign the physical logbook and I can always claim ignorance that there was a logbook there to be signed because you didnt put a disclaimer on your cache description.
  25. I think its safe to say that perhaps 5% of people actually solve the puzzle. The rest of the folks either get the necessary hints/help/coords or goes along with someone else to grab the cache. In this hobby its all about the numbers and everything goes to grab the smiley and thus the extra point and puzzle caches just add an extra hurdle to that goal. In my corner of the world some folks dont even attempt to solve puzzles but funnily enough have found all the puzzle caches around.
