  1. Easy. A bear holding a shark over its' head.
  2. How do I perform a factory reset on my eTrex? Back to top A factory reset may help if you are having issues with the date being displayed incorrectly, or other initialisation problems. 1. Hold down the PAGE (top right button) and PAGE UP (top left button) buttons down together and then simultaneously turn on the unit. The unit will enter the service mode and display: Bravo Version Software Version Time Internal temperature of unit Battery voltage External voltage Button presses Other tech info You can do a LCD screen check by pressing the PAGE button twice 2. While entering the service mode is interesting and useful, be careful which buttons you press because it is also possible to rest the unit to factory settings within this mode. Pressing "up"+"enter"+"on/off" keys in service mode will reset the eTrex to factory defaults. All presets and data will be lost. 3. To exit just turn it off as normal, and then turn it back on as normal. Unless you deliberately reset the GPS, nothing should have changed. NOTE: If you reset the unit. It is best if you set it outside in clearview of the sky. It may take 10-20 minutes to lock onto the satellites again.
  3. It should ask you some other questions after are you indoors? like what day is today? etc., you also may have to change to to Eastern time (-5:00hr). It might think today is Monday, when its Sunday. There is a "hard reset" option but it will wipe out any loaded maps, waypoints, or routes. I would try the other stuff first. You could try WalMart and get the Yellow Etrex H series for about $85+tax
  4. If the coin is trackable you will typically find a 6-8 character alphanumeric code on it. Go to this page: Groundspeak Trackables and enter the code in the "Enter the Geocoin or Travel Bug tracking number:" and press "Track" (sometimes you have to do this twice for some glitch). This will bring up the page that goes along with the item. Look at the goals and see if you can help it. Click on the "Add a log entry". There should be an option to "retrieve" the item, but sometimes people forget to drop them in a cache or are behind on their logging. You can "grab" the item to add it your "My Inventory" listed on your profile page. Write a note if you would like saying how awesome the coin is or where you found it or how you can help it or meet its goal and hit "Submit Log Entry". Then...when you have dropped the coin into another cache and you are ready to log it. You will see another box under the "comments box" that says "Dropped off any Travel Bugs? " which will list the coins and bugs in your inventory . Highlight the coin/bug name before you hit submit (press CTRL to highlight more than one) and the coin will get put into the cache you found. If you forget, go back to the cache page and log it again using the "Write Note" option and just say something like "bug drop". You can also go back and delete that note to clear the cache page of clutter (WHICH I WISH MORE PEOPLE WOULD DO) and the coin will still show in the cache inventory. Hope that helps.

    Help

Log in to your player account on gc.com. Click on your name at the upper right of the page. This brings up the "Account Details" page. Click on "Edit My Profile" about half way down on the right under the "Account Options" box Then toward the bottom of the next you will find a "Profile Details" section In the Forum Signature box you can type a message and/or using the format of: [*url=http://www.yourcointrader.com]Coin Trader List[/url*] add a clickable link. (Just remove the "*" , add the url of the webpage and name accordingly)
  6. According to the wikipedia WAAS page, N. America is *the* area and I am in Utah. I don't see the "D" you mentioned. Could it be that my unit will not display the "D"? Where would I find out if it should? It appears like the picture shows above when the WAAS correction is activated.
  7. I have a eTrex Venture HC and some questions. Where do I look for the 'Differential' option? On the System Setup page there is a WAAS/EGNOS option, but I don't see a 'Differential' option. Where is it? Also, is there any way to tell that the WAAS option is actually doing anything? Where would the "D" appear? I only see the numbers under the bars and no room for another symbol. Thanks. You will see a "D" on the bottom of the bar above the number on the satellite screen. If you are in a WAAS area you see the "D" if not you won't.
  8. Thanks for the help-if I use the "average" method, should I keep repeating the "waypoint" toggle & "average" several times, or does it just average 2 waypoints in a row? No, just set it down and let go for a minute or two. It does it automatically. You will see a little counter that lets you know how many times it has averaged the coords.
  9. Under the Main Menu you will find "Mark". He is a little man holding a flag. Press the toggle button to mark the location. At the bottom left of the screen you find "Avg". Select it and press the toggle button. Let it set for a minutes or two as it collects and averages the coords and press "Save". No need to dance around. The receivers in these are very accurate.
  10. I need them to perfect the "fur covered" coin. The prototypes I have been shown look mangy or like a bad toupee. It needs to be luxurious!
  11. Oh...now I see it. The "G" spot is in the middle. No wonder I couldn't find it.
  12. I have the same problem finding the hidden objects in the Highlights magazine in the waiting room of the doctor's office. I can't find the spoon in this one or can I? Now, I am off to poke a stick at box hidden in a bush...er, I mean go geocaching.
  13. For the same reason we have to have police - people in societies behave only when law is enforced upon them. That's been the history of societies and governments throughout time... in fact that's what GOVERNment means! The Groundspeak Guidelines are no different. Without active Reviewers this game would fast devolve into chaos. But i checked the box???
  14. Do not twist my position. It doesn't help you make a point. It has the opposite effect. OK, why do we have reviewers?
  15. Not really. I never put that kind of info on my caches. It's enough that I list them. If the land owner specifically requests that I do that, then I will follow their wishes.I've said that before D@nim@l, and a bunch of people stepped up and said they don't do it. Perhaps RK was even one of them. I know I sure would (and have). But I guess it depends on where it is, a gas station parking lot, TB hotel on your front porch in the suburbs, wooded rural location etc...I don't do that because it is superfluous. When I submit a cache, I check a box stating that it met the guidelines. Therefore, I am already affirming that adequate permission was received. There is no reason to state this again. All should be as honest as you, however it would be naive to think that every cache placed on commercial property was placed with permission despite "checking the box" so stating. If the reviewers upon review of the available maps and recon photos, point blank asked the hider via a note "With whom did you secure permission?" it would be different story. Just a couple thoughts:I don't believe it to be healthy to go through life working from the assumption that everything that everyone states is a lie. The bit that you posted from the guidelines did not require any cacher to list the person's name who gave them permission. It merely requested that we state that permission was received. Including the individual's name on the cache page is a very bad idea, in my opinion, for reasons given in the various other threads regarding this issue. If you presume that someone does 'lie' and check the box stating that adequate permission was obtained, when it had not, what would stop them from typing 'Adequate permission for this cache placement has been received.' in the description? I mss Auntie Weasel. You're absolutely right, nothing stops anybody from doing anything and I don't think it is necessary to list an individual's name on the cache page. That could be handled by the cacher/reviewer via note and would be there as a reference should a concern arise. The button just says "Yes. I have read and understand the guidelines for listing a cache." It doesn't say I agree with them or will follow them. Now, if we lived in your world there would be no need for reviewers because everybody would do everything they were supposed by reading the guidelines, tips, securing permission, etc. There is likely to be a lot more geocoins and red, yellow, green and white jeep travel bugs in circulation and a lot less armchair caching, virtual logs, forum angst, banning of members, stolen caches, sock puppets, bomb scares and LEO encounters and we could find caches when we went to Cracker Barrel. I think there should be sense of personal responsibility when it comes to hiding, however I think a blind eye gets turned to these concerns for other reasons. "Don't ask, don't tell".
  16. Not really. I never put that kind of info on my caches. It's enough that I list them. 17. This is from the guidelines, too. "If you are given permission to place a cache on private property, indicate this on the cache page for the benefit of both the reviewer and people seeking out the cache." Guess if it's not on there it must not exist?
  18. Explicit permission may be missing, you are correct.... Unfortunately, explicit permission is not required, only adequate permission is required. Are hiding caches in lamp skirts without explicit permission allowed? Due to the sheer number of them and, as you pointed out, how easy it is for the reviewers to determine that they are placed on private property, one would have to assume that TPTB consider lack of explicit permission adequate in those cases. Wouldn't you agree? I doubt any permission exists, explicit or otherwise, it's just precedent.
  19. I don't know why they aren't scrutinized more in the age of hi res google maps or bird's eye live.com maps. Isn't it obvious that it's in a shopping center and isn't likely that explicit permission to hide it under lamp skirt is likely missing. It's like geocaching's"don't ask, don't tell" policy.
  20. ah, hmmm. I don't follow this premise. If GC.com closed it's doors geocaching would still exist. How? The servers would be gone, hence geocaching would be gone regardless if the caches still existed or not. Jim Put down the kool-aid kiddo. The website would be gone, but would my geocache suddenly disappear from its rocky home? Geocaching.com lists geocaches, they don't hide them. Geocaching existed before the website and will exist after the website.
  21. For a bit of perspective, your typical neighborhood McDonalds store in a decent location generates between 600,000 and 4 million per year............. just 1 store.............. They don't expensive computer servers, internet connections, marketing staff, programmers, network folks etc........ 2.6 to 4.1 with a staff of 25 or more and all those pcs = just not a lot of money....... This may be true but that is PM revenue only mind you. The fact of the matter is: IF geocaching.com closed its doors tomorrow, geocaching would still exist. IF all the caches were pulled from geocaching.com tomorrow, it would no longer exist (well maybe that Waymarking thing would whatever that is).
  22. That got me curious. Emmett, can you tell me how many millions of dollars in revenue GC earns? Since you know that figure, how much of that revenue is income? Others might be interested in the numbers as well. There are over 1,735,000 user accounts. About 5-8% are premium members according to my calculations, times that by $30 puts it conservatively at $2.6m/yr. to liberally $4.1m/yr. Add in licensing, merchandise, advertising and the $1.50 for each trackable geocoin made and it adds quickly from there. Money paid out to content providers $0 ???
