  1. A word on weather and the nuvi: I've been caching with success for a year now with a NUVI 200. As correctly stated they are far from water resistant. so: Put it in a zip lock bag. I do this and have cached with it in serious showers, without a problem... Good luck
  2. A good idea There seems to be a shortage of fresh bugs and coins here lately. The only concern is that the "cacher mule" would need to do some SERIOUS caching while they're away to bring back the same amount That said, I'll gladly bring along the bugs I find to give them a fighting chance
  3. Yippee... My TB's arrived today (my first) so I'm all set for the incredible KZN TB race (with exchange students) to begin.
  4. Our local reviewer in South Africa is awesome. Averaging about 20minutes to publish. But the most amazing thing is, it doesn't seem to matter WHEN you submit it. 02:00am, by 02:20am it's out. Always super helpful too. Big thanks to ALL the reviewers out there...
  5. Hi Clockdoc I'm more than willing to help where I can and obviously should your TB's arrive at the East coast I'll do all I can to keep them moving and add a bit of info wherever I can. In terms of reciprocating the effort, my mom too is the equivalent of an elementary teacher here. Although she broadly understands what we do, she struggles a bit with the technical aspect (eg. turning on the computer:) I'll pitch it to her and see if I can get her interested... Sounds like a great innovation, well done!
  6. I've had a few days went I've set out for about 10 and blanked completely... What I always enjoy however, is that after about the 2nd DNF you really lose spirits. Then, you find one and PRESTO, you love the game again...
  7. Greetings all... I'm glad to announce my travel bug should be on it's way shortly (For the great mini sa kzn tb race). I look forward to the event dates.
  8. I must say, I'm not a huge fan of using trash as a cache... On the "Cool Cache Containers" page there are a number of very clever hides, but they're caches disguised as garbage. In my opinion, we should be doing our best to clean up a bit and not add to it. Attaching a container to it with a log doesn't make it not-trash... I completely undesrtand your situation however... Removing it would prove pretty tyring .... (I know it was corny but...)
  9. Post the GC number... Let us all have a go and send a mail to the bloke. Apply a bit of pressure
  10. I must admit... I'm amazed! I'd never have thought it okay to post soft co-ords... Surely it's kinda the point of the game. Without it, you may as well just have a cache page that says, "Down two blocks, turn right, it somewhere along the fence..."
  11. I have to agree. Stoddards Demise is spectacular! I tend to like a puzzle that is well thought out and ties up nicely at the end... Now I just have to go and find the cache:)
  12. Happened to me quite recently... In our province in South Africa all Cachers were challenged to hide 5 new caches to be published on the same date. While hiding a cache of my own, I stumbled upon someone elses. Naturally, I thought it rather amusing and logged it. I found the owner who also laughed... A FTF two weeks before publication. P.S. On the day it WAS published I accompanied another cacher on the hunt and made it a legal FTF!!!
  13. Good Job... After all, if there is a log book... It needs to be signed!!! I'd be well chuffed if I were the cache owner. I'd be surprised if the cache owner opened it, saw the log and WASN'T amused!
  14. Great thread folks... My addition is "Bottleneck: Sum Rhino Fun" http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...28-573bc317aa95 Spoiler: "Bottleneck: Sum Rhino Fun" is an anagram. The maths problem shown is simply the method in which to re-arrange the order of the title. It spells: Count the number of links... At the published co-ords, theres a chain, separated with split rings. Count the links and presto... You get the final co-ords
  15. Yup... When I grow up... I want one of THEM!!!! I've made a number of bolt caches and have yet to use a drill press. I pretty much do as has been desribed above: Put the bolt in a vice Drill a small pilot hole as straight as possible along the centre of the shaft. Then drill again with a thicker diameter. I tend to repeat this last stage about 3 times... Makes it a bit easier and you can stop early if you're too close to the edges...
  16. What a great day and a great weekend. I think not only did the initiative increase the number of caches, but it also seemed to bring out the imagination as well. What I thought was cool is I started in Pinetown and moved inland. Had a few FTF's then I obviously passed Diepienaars. There were no longer empty logs, just ones with their name on it. I'm sure it happened all over KZN. Yet another vote of thanks to Noddy for the idea and Fisheagle for his involvement. I look forward to the next couple of weeks when the harder guys begin to fall...
  17. Gooood Morning Sandpitters. The day has arrived. Best of luck today, I'm sure we'll meet a few of you on the road....
  18. Following problems at work, with my computer and all sorts.... It turns out this was one of the busiest weeks ever. Next thing I know I have one more to hide and just a few hours to do it in... Tomorrow's going to be great fun. Thanks to all for organising it... I tried to get hold of Puggels but her email seems to be down...
  19. A cunning plan good sir... The interesting thing: In your post, you've mentioned how you'll need to solve a certain mystery cache that's on the way.... That'll keep you thinking for the next couple of days Unfortunately, I'm going to have a bit of a broken day caching with other engagements... I may just have to warp the cache/time continuum... again!
  20. It could certainly be a big one. Just chatting to 4 other cachers, there are 25 out there hidden and waiting. Just 7 more sleeps... Anyone out there gonna discuss strategy?
  21. Aha... As an Air Traffic Controller (App radar, Durban, South Africa) I think something like SID's and STAR's sound awesome. I've thought about how to incorporate it many times but never had anything that flows nicely. If you come right, please won't you post the GC numbers... I'd love to see what you do...
  22. I was a semi-professional juggler for a long time. All the money I made went to skydiving. But then I had to give all that up for a real job as an Air Traffic Controller. The name pretty much made sense all around. Still, skydive, still juggle, just I just practice with planes
  23. That sounds absolutely fantastic. You really are a great ambassador for the sport . Well done Johan 1000 hills... How many caches?
  24. How is everybody going with their 5 cache placements? So far I've placed one, have one ready to go; and my third, I have to place the cache and work on the puzzle. Hoping to find another three spots to make it 6. Noddy: When will the caches be published. Can we expect the KZN cachers to be up and staring at their computers at the stroke of midnight? Or something a little more humane? Next, when should we submit our caches for publication? I assume then we should add a comment to the reviewer, something along the lines of, "For the uber-KZN-cache explosion on the 5th"?
  25. Hey, it's not allowed to place caches while I'm away... 1300kms for a first to find is a little rough... (I know, I know, no commitment!!)
