  1. You have to admire CO Admin's reflexes...like a horse's...just a horse's reflexes. Amazing! This all about the geocaching community and how it interacts through a geocaching tool
  2. I released all 4 of my Geocoins, I am down to my last TB which remains unactivated and one TB that I have made but haven't released yet. I am not sure I will buy more but on the finding part... Screw the views, health aspect, sharing, meeting and playing a game with other people...I must find these overvalued in monetary terms yet heavily emotionally valued pieces of commercial drivel that are strapped to varying degrees of personally valued objects, all to get a number on some obscure website, beside a sacred(?) scarab symbol which is cleverly merged with commercialism, so that I can...well um...what can I do with it...I'll think of something…it has a purpose, I know it does...But it couldn't be the views, healthy activity, sharing and meeting other people, playing a game, could it be..no way. Yeah I am a addict of finding TB's (and a full member of on-and-on anon) but if this is a disease I don't want to be cured! EDIT: For cynicism and humor
  3. Maybe Go, Maybe Go, Go, You Go Welcome to Geocaching and the wonderful yet trying world of Travel Bug Ownership. PRACTICAL (Engineering) – MAYBE GO A CD as a Travel Bug has a good chance of getting broken or destroyed, but I am sure you where thinking of a protector of some sort. Before I sent out some travel bugs and geocoins with instructional tags. I subjected them to some tests in dropping, cramming in backpacks and throwing them in the back of the car as you race home to log your find, all things that could possibly happen to a Travel Bug. COMMERCIAL – MAYBE GO There are big no-no-no-go rules about caches being commercial but there is definitely no rules about travel bugs being commercial or if there are they have been re-writing for this latest promotion. The Yellow Jeep Travel Bug promotion is sponsored by Jeep and some commercial websites, including Geocaching.com. You will get some flack and it might actually bring the wrath of the TPTB who are justified(?) about commercial promotion on their website and bandwidth. But then again it is OK to put a little by-line in about a business, that is if it pertains to geocaching, say in your sig line or in the GPS Garage Sale Forum. ARTISTIC – GO (Fun, Carefree, Genuine need to share your expressions as a human) Sure why not, it is something you created and you want to share it with other people. You are not demanding people buy anything and it has nothing to do with the numbers, just a fun creation that you love to share. FINAL – YOU GO The choice to start a TB is yours, the goal and what the item "traveler" is yours, how much emotional or monetary risk you are willing to put up with is yours. So I say go for it and see what happens. PS: I know you wanted a short answer, but I am on vacation waiting for Fall Semester to start up again and I have way to much time on my hands. Plus I am getting ready to be all analytical and junk. EDIT: Because I can
  4. Tis OK my child, say 9 Hail Jeremy's, do 5 5-difficulty and 5 5-terrain caches and all will be forgiven. In nomine Garmin, et Magellan, et Many Multi's. Amen. I am a recovering-Catholic so please forgive me, I know I'll need all the forgiveness I can get!
  5. As a TB owner I would love to know that my TB was still actually out there and not on the bottom of somebody's backpack who forgot to log it on the website and then it truly goes missing. For some people it is about the numbers. You could try to play the game the way you want and not put your expectations on somebody else's play. You can always try to be Informative rather than *Itchy but as in life there are no guarantees, except death and taxes. Cha-ching, +1 post count ...
  6. There is no problem with this article other than the unwarranted flame emails that hasty geocachers might send. The article is written in a literary style that is a little cynical but humorous and enjoyable none the less. It places geocaching in a good light and at least in didn't use the dreaded b-word, buried. Read, step back from the keyboard, breath deep, read again, step back, breath, then touch the keyboard only as a last resort.
  7. Good point about the Oregon geocoins and their traveling potential. I would also expand this to all geocoins that are able to be tracked. Just because a Geocoin is trackable and the original placer may want it to travel its still up to an individual geocacher to move it along and log it online to share. To placers- Don't risk it if you can't afford it, both monetarily and maybe more importantly, emotionally.
  8. Congratulations on your Oregon Gecoin Find! Looks like you allready got it logged at the Oregon Geocoin site here: http://www.cogeo.org/track/ Here's to many other finds and good luck!
  9. 11:08PM Mountain Time and all is well!...better!!..whole lot gooder!!! Thanks Jeremy, TPTB and TEAM! Nice to know the money IS going to a good cause.
  10. I believe Cannonlaw is correct the numbering would suggest a personal geocoin, one that is not trackable at the main geocaching.com website. Some people use personal geocoins as signature items and then number them for collecting purposes, other tracking methods or just for fun. You might be able to get more information by looking at the coin, maybe a website is printed on it somewhere. For geocoins that are trackable on the geocaching.com site, look at these websites: http://www.usageocoins.com Moun10Bike's GeoCoins Here is the Geocoin website by Team Fisur which has pictures of many geocoins, some trackable some not: http://www.geocities.com/team_fisur/geocoins/ Congratulations of this find and here's to many more!
  11. If it is obvious that the cache has been destroyed or stolen, i.e. toys, log and trash everywhere with a big open ammo can tossed a few yard around, then by all means log a DNF (Did Not Find) or a Note at the cache page stating your horrible discovery. A Need to be Archived is kind of a last resort stating a big problem with a cache speedily announcing to the owner and approver(s) to the cache's plight. I might recommend emailing the owner of the cache directly (at the top left by the cache name is a link to get to the owner profile) This is because the possibility remains that the cache is there but it is hidden in a way you have not come across or the hider is especially devious. This has happened to me on one occasion. I swore that the cache was gone or stolen only to email the owner and get a nice pictorial hint. I didn't feel ashamed, I felt like I was contributing to the game. You can try going back and looking at the site with fresh eyes until you are truly sure that the cache site has been disturbed.
  12. The personal TB is a great idea As for posting old notes, go ahead and do it. You can just delete the note at the cache page. This geocaching game is mostly internal, in that its up to you how you want to play the game after the essentials are fulfilled, i.e. Find it, Log it, Take Something, Leave Something, Share your find online. I have a personal TB and I use it as I see fit and it brings enjoyment, doesn't infringe on somebody else's play and enjoyment so it can't be all that bad.
  13. I have done this "imposter" switch with some GeoCoins that I released. I painted wooden nickels up really pretty, sealed them and then stuck a instructional tag on each one using the actual numbers from USA GeoCoins that I purchased. So far I don't have much to report as they haven't moved much. I am keeping the original geocoins for releasing if the others get lost, giving as a prize (say for moving the TB to 50 caches with a total of 15000 miles or something), or for now because I can't seem to part with my shiny baubles! The only problem could be that the Groundspeak TB tags are so recognizable, for the most part, and some people may just see your homemade TB's as regular trade items, not traceable TB's or God forbid, keep them for ransom out of spite! Pavlov's classic experiment - will the drool be produced from the geocacher's mouth just as much, if the shiny bug tag is replaced with an imposter. Good luck!

    Yjtb??

Ouch.. Imajika kind of bad press for us Coloradoans Some people are just too emotionally attached to their TB's It's actually quite simple... The YJTB's have just found their 4x4 nirvana and don't want to move to another state because Colorado is just that great. So I encourage all YJTB's to come to Colorado and check out our wonderful caches and cachers. While we are on (way off?) the subject, want to talk about a black hole, how about this one: HAM-MEE the HAM BUG Ahh...Death Valley in summer!
  15. I think it is the combination of your search options. That (and) <- means each option is combined in a boolean search: I have found AND that I own So you must have a smiley face in a cache AND own it for it to show up on the search. (Not many owners log a find on their own cache so no caches will satisfy this search option) If you are looking to create a PQ including all your owned caches and the ones you found may I suggest that you run two seperate PQ's with one search option clicked on each. And then merge them using your favorite .GPX manipulating software. Hope this helps and is not too confusing. EDIT: make it less (more?) confusing

    Usa Geocoin?

The USA GeoCoins are trackable just like other Travel Bugs. People leave them in caches with the hope of them moving from cache to cache and people logging that on the website. The bonus, if you are into the "numbers" game, is a little icon of a coin on your user stats and of course the warm feeling you are playing nice with other people's hard earned money which they spend on little trinkets for this game. More information can be found here: http://www.usageocoins.com/ EDIT: fur speling
  17. Allright Bazzle the money has been sent and you should be getting an email about it soon. I look foward to receiving the coins. If you would PLEASE PLEASE keep me informed, as best as possible, when shipped that would be REALLY REALLY appreciated!!
  18. If we send in our money now, Will there be notifications along the way? I don't like paying for something so far in advance and then not hearing from somebody for months. But enough of my whining, sounds great and put me down for 4 with cases (I sent an email to you Bazzle)
  19. I'll say an early welcome. Try any of the caches on the West Front Range side like: NORAD'S Horns Cheyenne Mountain's Heart Plus the mentioned cache is still listed (hope I didn't get the owner in trouble again!): Cache My Drift And as always watch the weather, the altitude and your car's radiator cap...we are high up (as in altitude! ) in the Springs.
