  1. I'm fairly new and I'm guilty of a few notes on caches that I only made a cursory search for with the thought that a DNF might discourage somebody else from looking. Such instances come up if I didn't really go to the cache with the intention of looking for it (was already standing nearby, glanced around a bit... too many people to make a thorough search so I left with the intention of coming back later, etc). Just today I put a note on one saying that I saw the cache, but didn't sign because there were too many people around, planning to come back later. I didn't want to log that one as found, nor not found, but I thought that the information that the cache was still there was potentially helpful to others. Yesterday I went to a cache but didn't log anything because the site has recently been demolitioned, so I sent a private note with a picture of the area to the cache owner asking if it was in need of archiving instead. If I made a real effort to find it and didn't, I log a DNF... have logged a few.
  2. Originally used my real name, decided I didn't want to do that (not very creative), considered a few others, but they were taken, so I finally made an anagram of my name and those of my children, which happens to include a hobby of mine (hiking). That said, a bard I am not, though I do make less than pleasant noises on the guitar, so "Vexed" is quite appropriate. :-) Luckily I settled on this one before I had too many finds, so I only had to edit a few logs to specify that I'd signed under a different name. I find the name to be a bit long for some of the tiny logs, so I abbreviate it to AVBH when signing those.
  3. Thanks everybody for the feedback! We'll definitely wait until we've got a good sense of the game and make sure that we stay involved before placing one. Luckily he discovered that a few of his friends are into caching already, so he's already making plans to go out with them, which'll help keep him engaged.
  4. My teenage son and I started yesterday and he's really excited about creating a cache once we've played for a while (he's starting making one, and I've told him we can place it once we have a number of finds logged). We'd like to place one near his mom's house, but that's not marked as my home location. Is it possible to create a cache that is ~100 miles away from your home location if you indicate that it can be maintained in a timely manner, or will it be rejected? (I'm there /at least/ once per week, plus he can maintain it if I'm unavailable).
