  1. Thanks, I'm staying at the Adolphus Hotel downtown. It looks like I'll rent a car Saturday afternoon and go out on my own. I want to try to hit all the older caches to fill up my Jasmin challenges (Like Tombstone GC62). I might also try to get up to Oklahoma to grab a cache there.
  2. I'll be attending a conference in Dallas next Monday and Tuesday (April 11/12) but convinced my company to fly me down there on Saturday. I'll be arriving on Saturday afternoon (April 9) and would like to go caching on Saturday night and Sunday. Is there anyone or any group down there that I could join during their caching outings? I'll pay for gas. Thanks! Dan

  4. I couldn't figure out which forum to post this in since the iPhone section was replaced with feedback so move at will. How does one go about resetting the Splash Screen option in the GC iPhone app when trying to open coord.info/GCNNNN URL's in Safari? When I get a text notification of a new cache, I click on the link, it opens Safari, sees that it is a coord.info link and then opens the iPhone app. Unfortunately, it does not go to the cache listed in the link. Instead, it re-opens to the last page I was on during my previous use of the app. I've read that clearing the cache (iPhone Settings -> Safari -> Clear Cache) would fix the issue but it doesn't seem to be the case. I'm using GC app version 4.1.2 on a iPhone 3GS, OS version 3.1.3 Thanks in advance. Dan
  5. My family and I are going on a 15 state, cross-country vacation (ok, I'm geocaching; they are sight-seeing). I have collected a number of travel bugs and coins that I am taking with us. At the end of our driving portion of the trip, I'll be dropping off all the travelers (not the kids or wife) at a TB hotel. Instead of merely logging them once in the final destination, I'd like to "dip" them into each (or many) of the caches that we find along the way so as to document that the bugs have been at the various locations. Is there a greasemonkey script (or any other script) that will make this process any easier? Doing it by hand for each individual travel bug/coin would be very tedious. Thanks!
  6. Not PQ's, but I requested my finds early this morning and have yet to see it in my email. I'm able to download it my "Pocket Queries Ready for Download" however.
  7. That's one of the first things I do when I read a new cache description... View source for hidden HTML comments. [] You could right it on paper and stick it under your mattress. Or you could put it in plain view under the heading of "Read This" or "Instructions"... no one ever reads the instructions. Seriously, Google Docs, Bookmark lists, and hidden waypoints are all great ideas. I really like the hidden waypoint idea; it keeps your note with the appropriate cache. You could also use the free online backup sites like Dropbox to keep backups of your notes.
  8. Was my question unclear or just not exciting enough? I'm going to assume all of you are eager to answer so I'll assume that it was unclear. If I search for caches near me, the first column on the result list is the direction and distance. For example, NW .2mi, S .7 mi, etc. However, if I click on another player's profile, click the "Geocaches" tab, and then click either the "All Geocache Finds" or "All geocache Hides" links, I see a similar list. However, the first column does not show the direction or distance. This is what I am referring to. Thanks!
  9. Why are the distances from my home coordinates absent when I look at another player's profile list of caches that they have hidden? Thanks, Dan
  10. Thanks for everyone's response. I am currently creating queries for caches along a route corresponding to the day we will be on the road. I could only get the query to go 10 miles on either side of the route, so I had to adjust the route to zig-zag on some back roads thereby expanding the 10 mile limit further. I've also started to gather the hardware I need. I've got a netbook lined up but need to investigate air-cards so I can have service on the road. I've got spare cables for all my connections, and we already have an inverter to power various devices. We've decided not to drive back from St Louis since airfare costs about the same as the fee car-rental would charge for dropping the car off in a different location (+gas/food). Plus, I'll be tired of driving by then. We will have a little over an hour layover in the Denver airport. If only there were a virtual cache in the airport, I could add Colorado to the list of cached states. I wonder if I could persuade a local cacher in Denver to do that. LOL Thanks again, Dan
  11. Excellent, thank you. Yeah, I knew that it wouldn't recharge the batteries; I just wanted to confirm that it wouldn't discharge the batteries. Dan
  12. Thanks. I suppose I should also add to the list that the participants of this little journey will be my wife, kids 13 and 10, and myself. The more cachers we meet along the way, the merrier! Day 1: Train from Cincinnati, Ohio to Chicago. We will have several hours to walk (no car) around and find a couple nearby caches. Train from Chicago to La Crosse, Wi. Here is where we pick up our SUV rental. Day 2: La Crosse, Wi to Chamberlain, SD along I-90. With a drop into Iowa somewhere to grab at least one cache. Day 3: Chamberlain, SD to Rapid City, SD along I-90. Going through Badlands. Perhaps a quick (but currently not planned) trip to Nebraska for a cache. Day 4: Rapid City, SD to Hulett, WY (adjacent to Devil's Tower). Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Cave of the Winds(?), Deadwood. Day 5: Devil's Tower, then drive to Cody, WY via I-90, then SR 14. Day 6: Cody, WY to West Yellowstone, MN. Do north loop of Yellowstone. Day 7: Do South loop of Yellowstone to end up in Jackson, WY Day 8/9 White water rafting - Snake River Day 10ish Gets a little fuzzy here... Drive to Slat lake City, UT via a corner of Idaho. Might sneak into Nevada a spell. Days 10ish - 14 Fly from Salt Lake City to St Louis, MO. Eventually drive back to Columbus, OH via I-70. Whew, I'm tired just thinking about all that.
  13. We are planning on a trip from Ohio to Idaho spanning 14 different states and I'm trying to gather an equipment list. I thought I would post a message here to try to get some suggestions on what I should add to my list. So far, I currently have: iPhone with Groundspeak's geocaching application Garmin Venture GPSr Laptop (full size, but considering getting a smaller netbook) GSAK license. Anything else I should consider? Ok, second question. After I've gathered my list of equipment, what process would you follow to update/search for caches as you progress along your route? Do you create numerous "Cache along a route" packages and load them as you go? Thanks for your thoughts. Dan
  14. We are planning an extended trip West from Ohio and will be spending a lot of time in the vehicle. Is it possible to use a car charger to power my Garmin Venture HC while we are travelling rather than discharging the batteries? If so, does it matter which cable I use? Will any mini usb charger work or does it have to be a Garmin charger? Thanks, Dan
  15. I went to place a new cache at at site I've had my eye on for months. I finally decided to place the cache yesterday during lunch. I set the GPSr down doing it's averaging and started to prepare the container. When I reached into the hiding spot to place it, I discovered another container! Whoops! I opened it but there was nothing inside but a fresh log with no GC code or name on it. Laughing, I signed the log but didn't date it. I'm waiting for the publish announcement anytime now. Dan
  16. Invite sent Thanks! I haven't received it yet, but I suppose they are doing them in "waves". Dan
  17. Sounds like a pretty cool idea. I'm also a software engineer and would be wiling to help out. However, sadly, I do not yet have a wave account. If you've got some invites left over, I'd really appreciate one. danmonroe.ata at gmail dot com Thanks, Dan
  18. In this corner, US Geocacher of the Year 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 with 30,042 posts. In the other, a thin skinned newcomer with 8 posts (6 from this thread and counting) I just put out 5 caches with over $100 in swag plus another $50 in FTF prizes, and you're worried about 75 cents? I consider it as gifts to the community as repayment for the countless hours of enjoyment I get from the hobby.
  19. My new puzzle series, GeoQuest, has just been published that is entirely interactive fiction. Here is a link to the first cache in the series: Zany Squirrel - GeoQuest, Chapter 1 Since you are probably not in central Ohio, you can still play the game. All you have to do is to enter the command "switch mode" to switch into "Game mode." Sonny and Sandy from podcacher.com talked about it briefly in their show #235 Enjoy! --Dan
  20. I'm looking for a couple people to beta test my new interactive fiction geocaching puzzle(s). Basically, the people who will be playing the game (cachers) are trying to find 5 physical caches hidden in various locations around central Ohio. The GPS coordinates are revealed to them by solving the 5 major puzzles in the game. So far, so good, but there is a twist. In order to solve the 5th puzzle in the game, they need to have solved the other 4 puzzles and then found the 4 corresponding physical caches in "real life" Inside each container, they will receive a clue. When they have collected all four clues, they will return to the game where they will be able to solve the 5th puzzle. When they do, they will finally get the coordinates to the 5th cache. You don't have to live in Ohio to play the game; there is a "game mode" that will allow you to get the clues you need to solve the 5th puzzle. Let me know if anyone is interested. Thanks, Dan
